BYU Athletics guide to sign up for ESPN+ for the Toledo game:
https://byucougars.com/story/football/1 ... do-on-ESPN+

Very curious, since we haven't seen an extension on our ESPN contract if this Toledo game on ESPN+ isn't a test to see what the BYU streaming market is. The data would should help ESPN to really have actual data to know how BYU fans would respond to being put in a situation where they had to pay for the service to see as many games as they do.

Just a thought.

I actually signed up for ESPN+ last season for a BYU basketball game while I was going to be in the Philippines for 2 weeks last December. I didn't research that one enough because ESPN+ didn't work out of the Philippines. I ended up listening to the game on KSL radio.

The BIG 12 recently expanded their ESPN contract to include ESPN+. I think all future ESPN contracts will include content for ESPN+.

May as well sign up. It's the future and BYU will have more games on such streaming services in the future.

Does it help or hurt BYU if we sign up for the game?

Curious what thought do you have that it would hurt BYU? IMHO it would help, if, as we are beginning to believe, streaming is the future of sports.

I simply wish I was there in person as I lived for a year 50 miles south east of Toledo, so it would be a bit of a homecoming. I like living in Utah, but Ohio will always be home.

If it does well the contract might include these games. If it does not then we might not have any more of them. I am torn on which way it should go. How much would they pay for a ESPN+ game. I would bet less than an ESPN2 game.

We can't get ESPN+ (or any other Disney streaming) at our home because our ISP doesn't provide the location data that Disney wants. They have their engineers on it today, but no promise of a fix before kick.

So, I get to set up a hotspot with my phone, connect my Roku to it, and then use mobile data and 4G to stream the game.

The ESPN+ tech support asked why I don't just stream the game on my phone, but cast it to the TV. I had to explain (1) mobile streaming is at lower resolution than what the Roku offers so I'd have a grainy picture if that did work, and (2) that wouldn't work because the phone would have to be on the same network as the TV instead of using mobile data....you know, the network connected to the ISP that Disney/ESPN have blacked out from all streaming.

In sum, it's feeling like we're back on the .mtn a bit this morning.

I paid for my ESPN+ subscription and pulled it up on the Roku and it looked good. It will be interesting to watch a game and see if the quality is as good as it needs to be. I'm trying to go in with an open mind.
