Re: Chaz Ah You arrested
I'm an RM and I've made many mistakes. But I've never endangered public safety and broken the law and put the life and health of others in serious jeopardy. People die from drunk drivers. Lives are permanently altered. It's not like an RM having a can of beer at a party or sleeping with his girlfriend.
Now I can only hope that Chaz gets the treatment he desperately needs and if he does, and pays his restitution to society, I hope he can return to football.

Re: Chaz Ah You arrested
Everyone needs to remember he was arrested on "suspicion" of driving under the influence. Just because there was containers in the vehicle and he was speeding doesn't mean he was intoxicated. I know I know the chances of him not being are very small but we all should hold out hopes he wasn't. I hate the thought of him wearing an ugly Utes uniform because I think that's where he will be if this was in fact a DUI.

Just because there was containers in the vehicle and he was speeding....and failed field sobriety tests TWICE....doesn't mean he was intoxicated.a1247 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:24 am Everyone needs to remember he was arrested on "suspicion" of driving under the influence. I have a coworker who failed 2 sobriety test and had zero alcohol in his system. Do I think this is the case with Chaz.....no but one can hope.Fido wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 10:07 amJust because there was containers in the vehicle and he was speeding....and failed field sobriety tests TWICE....doesn't mean he was intoxicated.a1247 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:24 am Everyone needs to remember he was arrested on "suspicion" of driving under the influence. Re: Chaz Ah You arrested
If I may be condescending for a moment:
I think folks in Utah are a little blase about just how dangerous it is to drive under the influence. I grew up in Texas and Ohio where the exposure level to DUI stupidity was much greater. There's less drinking here, fewer bars, no drive through beer barns, and less of a blue-collar culture built around alcohol. I ran around with a group of 6 other guys in high school that grew to be really tight. Since graduation we've buried four of those six guys, all involving alcohol or drugs and vehicles. One was a driver, others were just victims. Just one example is here:
https://www.tmj4.com/news/local-news/2- ... iver-crash
DUI is the ultimate selfish act as far as I am concerned, and there absolutely should be dire consequences for anyone who does it. If drinking were more prevalent in Utah and Utahns had more personal connections to the life-taking and life-wrecking impacts of DUIs, I think many would feel far differently. This isn't a BYU-player or RM only position. I don't care if you're an RM or a filthy-yewt-from-birth -- it's 2020 and anyone can get an anonymous no-questions-asked ride from anywhere anywhere by just opening an app on their phone. I wish every DUI driver had to go through the same public shaming that we seem to reserve for just BYU athletes to help dissuade others from this selfish stupidity.

I completely agree. The attitude I've seen expressed on some other sites like Twitter and elsewhere, about how DUI is no big deal, and just a simple mistake, no different than skipping church, make me absolutely sick. An act of DUI is an act of attempted manslaughter and when no one gets hurt, it's a miracle.

As a prosecutor who handles DUI cases ... the facts are pretty good for the prosecution at this point. That's not to say there isn't a defense, but he's in a bad spot.a1247 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 10:11 amI have a coworker who failed 2 sobriety test and had zero alcohol in his system. I completely agree with the condemning of DUI's. Society at large seems to brush them off way too easily. I used to teach a DUI class and brought in a guy who had been convicted AFTER he slammed into a car and killed 2 people. It IS a huge risk that fortunately, more often than not, does not result in death or injury ... but is never worth the risk.
My point is only that we need to be careful in judging him ... we've all made plenty of mistakes and down-right bad choices. I hope that whatever lead to this can be addressed for him ... and I really don't want to see him in red. So, I'm cheering for corrective measures that help him long term, and hoping to see him stay at BYU!

Re: Chaz Ah You arrested
This is where I'm at. I'm pretty sure that most people have driven when they shouldn't have been driving; for example, when they are distracted or drowsy - both of which are just as dangerous as driving while impaired. I see people texting or watching movies or driving with no hands while eating behind the wheel every day. We as a society need to crack down on all forms of bad driving, and probably be circumspect when it comes to assessing our own driving habits. Along those lines I fully agree that whatever lead up to this needs to be addressed so that this doesn't happen again.

Is it sad that one of my first thoughts is "it is this kind of stuff that will get Kalani fired". I'm also sad for the young man but seriously.

Not for local legacy recruits. These are guys that everyone is EXPECTING the coach to recruit. If he was getting academic exceptions to bring in guys with no ties to the university and they were doing stuff like this that is one thing, but I don't think anyone blames the coach for guys like Ah You, Pau'u, Bernard, etc.
