I was hoping they would push it back to lessen Covid disruptions.

Not me, next thing you know there could be another Covid spike and Spring Ball could just be canceled. Right now numbers are way down, get in and get done as much as possible right now. At Boise St they still are up in the air about when to start or will they start.
So have Spring Ball now, coach up the players, show them what need to work on tell Fall Camp. The earlier the better, it give the players more time to work on the things they need to improve on (that they could even do if things get shut down again).

I'm really excited about the DL:
Lost
Zac Dawe 575 snaps
Khyiris Tonga 465 snaps
Bracken El-Bakri 453 snaps
Jeddy Tuiloma 18 snaps
Total snaps lost from 2020- 1,511
Currently returning
So Gabe Summers 277 snaps
Fr Caden Haws 223 snaps
Jr Earl Tuioti-Mariner 175 snaps
Jr Alden Tofa 148 snaps
Sr Uriah Leiataua 128 snaps
Fr Seleti Fevaleaki 100 snaps
Fr Tyler Batty 96 snaps (4 games)
Jr Lorenzo Fauatea 58 snaps (4 games, how many snaps has had the other 2 years at BYU)
Fr Fisher Jackson 7 snaps
Fr Freddy Livai 4 snaps
Total snaps returning from 2020- 1,216
Not counting Hirkley Latu 6 snaps (is in the transfer portal right now)
Most of the returning DL are underclassmen. That is where the speed rushers are going to come from, Batty had 4 sacks in just 4 games, Fisher Jackson was a WR/Safety in High school at 6' 5" 220 and now he is 6' 5" 252 DL at BYU.
BYU will hopefully have So Atunaisa Mahe who is/was the strongest play on BYU's team back from injury after setting out the 2020 season. Then add in the Utah transfer Mufi Hill-Hunt, plus the other new DL recruits Brooks Maile, Bruce Mitchell, John Nelson, Josh Larsen, and Cade Albright. Hill-Hunt is in school and I think Maile grey-shirted this past season so they should be a go for Spring Ball. Cade Albright will be interesting and should be another speed rusher for BYU, he was a 6' 5" 210 OLB in High School that could really get after the QB.

A couple of position changes for spring ball:
Freshman TE Donovan Hanna moved to OL
Sophomore QB Mason Fakahua moved to RB
Utah transfer DL Mufi Hill-Hunt moved to OL.

The single most important story that can come out of Spring Practice is that no player suffered an injury that will cause them to miss any or all of the 2021 season.
BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)

The 121-player spring ball roster has been released. https://byucougars.com/roster/football/2021
Undoubtedly there will be some cuts from this list to make room for some guys for the fall. And the final fall roster is only 98 players deep.

Just a few things that are interesting--I show only 76 scholarship players on the spring ball roster (not counting the 3 covid-exception Seniors from last year). There will be 85 scholarship spots--but if you add in everyone who may be on the fall roster on scholarship, that number reaches 91. So there will be some sorting out the scholarships. But it looks like spring is where the walk-ons who will contribute are being sorted out the most.Fido wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 4:04 pm The 121-player spring ball roster has been released. https://byucougars.com/roster/football/2021

Per FBSchedules.com, the spring game to wrap up spring ball will be on Friday, Mar. 26. I've also read that there is a pro day earlier in the day followed by the spring game that night. Limited tickets (about 7500) will be made available for the game.
