New Mexico Bowl thread

Post by Fido »

Just some twitter notes from the past few days with the bowl game coming up on Saturday.
- OL Harris LaChance is out for the bowl game with injury, and then is done at BYU as he is attending the Hula Bowl
- RB Lopini Katoa is out for the bowl game with injury. The other RBs are all available.
- QB Jaren Hall has not practiced up to this week--but Sitake has not ruled him out. It depends on practice leading into the game on Saturday. If he can't go, Cade Fennegan is expected to get the start.

Wide receiver Brayden Cosper will be done with his college football career after the bowl game.

“This is it for me,” Jake Oldroyd said. “So my last game will be fun.”

Despite enrolling at BYU in 2016, Oldroyd still had another year of eligibility remaining in 2023, thanks to the free COVID year in 2020. But he’s not taking that as his post-football life is already taking shape.

“I’ll give [the NFL] a shot. I figure, why not? I already have a job I’ve accepted. So I’ll be working in the area and training leading up to Pro Day. I’ll put myself out there and see if there are any takers.”

So the latest tweets from the last practice prior to the game today included updates that Jaren Hall was still spotted on a scooter so he is not likely to play (in my opinion). Sitaki also reportedly said Puka Nacua was battling some injuries and is not a for sure go on Saturday. Blake Freeland IS playing.

Looks like it may be Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters as the starting QB tomorrow.

I thought that I heard that Fennegan was also injured. Between injuries and the transfer portal this is not going to be the same group of players that we saw during the season...which may be a good thing...

Sol Jay is starting from what I've heard. No Wake or Pika either.

I was not expecting this win, and especially not the way it was won, with defense (generally, not the last series) and on a defensive play. Go cougs!

BYU defense stops SMU on the 1 yard line on a 2 point conversion attempt with 8 seconds remaining to seal the 24-23 win. The running game did enough along with Ben Bywater's pick 6.

I know they are years apart but BYU beat SMU with an offensive play in the "Miracle Bowl" and beat them with a defensive play this time. Both were the last play of the game.
