Tomorrow's weather forecast
To get an updated idea of what kind of weather BYU will be facing tomorrow, I fulled up tomorrow's forecast on several different sites. The current forecast is much more favorable than we were first led to believe.
Forecast for University, MS, Sept. 3 2011 4:00 PM
94 Degrees
40% Humidity
Feels like 98 Degrees
Yes that's still hot, but a 98 Degree heat index is a lot lower than the 113 I've been hearing around. If this is the actual conditions tomorrow, weather will be a non-factor.

Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
Yeah, but that is not going to be actual conditions--the forecast you are looking at is not the forecast for the 50 yard line of an artificial turf playing field, which is where the game will be played. Weather forecasts record temperature in the shade, generally at the top of some pole mounted weather-station. Unfortunately football games are not played in the shade nor on the top of a pole. The game tomorrow will be played in direct sunlight on artificial turf where temps will be drastically higher. Have you ever noticed on hot days walking across an asphalt parking lot that the worst of the heat radiates up at you from the ground? Synethetic turfs are even worse than asphalt.Ungoy wrote:To get an updated idea of what kind of weather BYU will be facing tomorrow, I fulled up tomorrow's forecast on several different sites. A study of synthetic turf at BYU in 2002 showed that when the temperature of grass was 78 degrees, the temperature of the synthetic turf was 117 degrees--BYU has reported a maximum temperature at Provo of 200 degrees on their synthetic turf. Penn State also did a study when air temperatures were 79, 78, and 85 degrees. The temperatures for the synthetic turf were 120, 130, and 146 degrees. Note that the air temperatures for these studies was considerably less than the 94 degrees forecast for tomorrow.

The turf at Ole Miss is legendarily hot--teams have had to replace shoes at halftime because the soles have melted.

Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
The temperature is recorded in the shade, but the temperature is the same in the sun or the shade. If temperature on artificial turf is as high as you say it is, the players would all die. Nobody can compete in temperatures like that, which is why Arizona and Arizona STate play all their games at night, as does UNLV and other desert dwelling teams.
The players will tell you it's hot down there, but so what? they'll be fine.

If you don't believe me, you are free to click on the link and read the studies by BYU, Penn State, and Missouri as to the temperatures of synthetic turfs.golong wrote:The temperature is recorded in the shade, but the temperature is the same in the sun or the shade. As for the temperature sun or shade, the air temperature might be the same, but the temperature on your body is markedly different, and you tend to be more concerned about how hot it is on your skin as opposed to how hot the air is around you. Otherwise people wouldn't look for shade to cool down.

Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
I think the take-home point is that 98 degrees, while definitely hot, isn't that uncommon in a Provo summer, and 40% humidity is only a little bit higher than the mid 30's that we get here.
Practicing on the Provo turf in 90's and mid 30's humidity isn't that different from 98 and 40%.
It won't be a factor

Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
It's the actual turf that reaches those temperatures, not the air above it (though the air above the turf would certainly be higher than what the weather report says). Your skin is only touching it for a few seconds at a time when you get tackled.golong wrote:The temperature is recorded in the shade, but the temperature is the same in the sun or the shade. Except in Provo they practice on grass outside, not turf. Grass is cooler than the air-temperature.tmoney35 wrote:I think the take-home point is that 98 degrees, while definitely hot, isn't that uncommon in a Provo summer, and 40% humidity is only a little bit higher than the mid 30's that we get here.

Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
Point is that reports of 113 degree air temperatures on the field at game time are not far-fetched at all.tmoney35 wrote:It's the actual turf that reaches those temperatures, not the air above it (though the air above the turf would certainly be higher than what the weather report says). Re: Tomorrow's weather forecast
Isn't there a tropical storm coming up the Gulf of Mexico right now? How does that factor into the forecast?
