Not too sure about this either. I think you hit on the biggest weakness earlier, and that's the decision making capabilities. I don't think it's so much we need a new offensive system or something. I think we need an OC that can make better calls. We have great QBs and receiving corp, but for some reason we have a hard time putting it all together.

McG and Gunk, I agree that Anae (and the offense) is great most of the time, especially when they have a lead. But they seem to !STRUGGLE! when they get down, especially by more than one score. Patience seems to be a virtue that these Cougars simply do not have. Again, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know where exactly the problem lies. Anae's play calling, Hall's choices at the line and in the moment. There seems to be ample talent and BYU should be able to score more than 7 points vs TCU. There are some hidden (to me anyway) wrinkles that need ironed out somewhere. I'm not sure it it's all just Anae's play calling but I suspect it could be a large part of the issue.

I do know that it all frustrates the dickens out of me.

I agree that something needs to happen. Tonight on a 3rd and 8 I leaned over to my buddy and said "If we run a draw I am going to lose my mind." We run a draw and I lost my mind.
Anae is predictable and the MWC has him figured out. I don't know if I'm saying that he needs to be fired, maybe I am, but there needs to be some serious changes going on in the offensive gameplan.

Anae is 90% great. But he's tapped out. He sometimes get bogged down in games, and fails to see the big picture. We hoped that would change by placing him in the booth. It hasn't.

Someone replacing him would be a near-clone, but someone that made better in-game decisions, and was able to dissect the defense a little better.
I like what you are saying, I'm wondering are there any names out there that are potential candidates? Is Domon ready for a shot? Do we take a OC from someone else? Is a weaker team HC ready for a chance to be OC at a bigger school? I'm not sure who is out there that may be a good fit.

My main problem is with the defensive coaching... until that changes, it doesn't matter what we do on offense. It still strikes me as funny that the DB coach is the one that gets the promo to DC. Our D-backs have routinely been the worst part of our defense... I like Bronco's approach to recruiting (see: Miracle) and his personnel ability (his players "buy in" every single year), but I would like to see more fire from him as far as bad calls go, and also more passion about the lack of coaching going on...

We have good players on both sides of the ball.

I'm afraid that there is no way in the world that Anae will get fired. His record is too good. The problem is that we play in the MWC where more then half of the teams are mediocre at best so a good record here isn't saying much. My problem is that TCU and Utah have us figured out. Anae is predictable and it drives me nuts.

But we've always played against this kind of competition, in the MWC and before that in the WAC, and we've never had the consistent success that we've had the last several years. I agree that something needs to change for us to move to that elite level, but I don't think it's as simple as just changing a coordinator.

Changing a coordinator certainly won't change things completely. I think we can all agree more speed is needed on the team, especially on the defensive end, and more athleticism. But just picking up a talented player here and there isn't going to change things drastically. It will take a higher level of talent across the board on both sides of the ball, which will take a long time and is partly dependent on how well we do. With Utah going to a BCS bowl two times in the last 5 years and TCU headed there as well BYU will start to lose MWC recruits. If we lose to Utah this year, that's two years in a row we would have lost to both TCU and Utah, establishing BYU as the present day third best team in the MWC. A dangerous position to be in, especially with Utah competing directly with many of our recruits.

Switching the OC won't change things over night, but it might slow the bleeding a bit and get us someone who's a bit better at squeezing as much juice out of what he's given.
