So, it's okay for a player to criticize fans but not okay for fans to criticize a player?
I get Hoffman's frustration, but directing it towards fans is dumb. It's the fans paying $100+ a ticket to watch him. It's the fans paying for cable TV so they can watch him. The more "fair weather" fans the better for BYU, right? Aren't we trying to be some elite, national football team.
I am sorry, college or not, a player criticising those that support his sport is dumb and if he's allowed to be offended by fans that don't "support" BYU the way he thinks they should (nevermind the fact they are supporting the team financially) then I have no problem with fans expressing their frustration.

Ding, ding, ding!! We have a winner!!
I agree, especially when the criticism isn't personal. Stick with how the team/players played. When it crosses over to personal attacks, then those fans are morons.

Exactly. I love Hoff but has he not been in this pitiful offense the last 3 years? Does he not remember the JV offenses he has been the only bright spot of? I think he knows exactly what we're frustrated with and 3 years is hardly fair-weather. In fact, where has the fair weather been? I haven't seen any since 2009!

This is one of the most depressing threads I have ever read. It's like reading the comments of a bunch of Ute trolls after a Trib article. The level of venom and animosity directed at Hoff (yes, it's gone straight at him), the team and the coaching staff in this (and other threads after this loss) is embarrassing and demoralizing. The entitlement that is being shown by people claiming to be fans is deplorable. I'm fairly sure that the vast majority of the posters on this site would consider themselves disciples of the Savior, but the things being spewed here aren't anything like what He would have us say.
I know that we are all very disappointed in the loss, and we have the right to express it, but the comments I'm reading went far beyond that in about the first three posts on Saturday. (that was hyperbole, so please don't bother going back and counting) Fans should be fans. Fans are there to support and lift up their team, encouraging them on to victory. Beating them up will NEVER accomplish that. You can beat a slave to keep him working, but you'll never get him to be John Henry. Get over it. You have expressed your disappointment, now get behind your team. I don't care how much you paid for your ticket, you weren't paying for the right (entitlement) to take over, or to libel anybody, or to show such amazing disdain for a player who has done nothing but good for BYU, just because he made a plea for fan support now when they really need it. The ONLY right you bought with your ticket or your cable subscription was the right to watch the game. The right to complain was given somewhere back in the eternities (before the council), and comes without the right to choose the consequenses. The consequenses of this level of vitriol cannot be good for the team or for the fans, so the best it can be is bad___for all of us.
As for Hoff not playing, if he couldn't run, he would have been of no value, and players have been lost for whole seasons with hamstring injuries. Is that what you want? As for his asking for BYU fans to act like real fans instead of trolls, DO YOU REALLY BLAME HIM? If so, you certainly have a lot of gall!
Now, I know I'm going to take a lot of heat for this post, but as Joseph Smith said "hit pigeons flutter." We can be sure that the ones who are the most guilty will be doing the most fluttering. There is no excuse for the things that have been said here. BYU fans need to quit thinking that, just because we are the "righteous" BYU fans we are entitled to a national championship every year in every sport, and that we should have more say in how the program is run at BYU than the prophet has; and if the boys don't always win, especially when we think they should, we have every right to say anything we want. (again please don't bother calling me on the hyperbole in this paragraph)

Some of you fans sound like 5 years olds " I want what I want when I want it "
Are we seriously calling out Cody Hoffman
The Guy could be making some serious money right now on an NFL team. Think about Cody playing injured in game 1 and his injury gets worse. Not only is the team worse off with him out the year but he hurts his future career.
I'm sure some fans could care less about Cody as a human, you just want wins.
Some of you are ok with losses as long as its against teams you deem acceptable.
Watch a team for 25 years and Byu owes you something? You HAVE a right as a fan etc etc
I thought ya'll where just caught up in the moment after the loss and were letting off some steam.. Its mid week and people are still at it. What a bunch of entitled spoiled fans..

This is what really gets me. For the last three years we've stuck with BYU as the offense has floundered; yet we're "fair weathered." Huh?
Hoffman wants to see what "fair weather" fans look like, go look at SF Giants fans. Stadium is practically empty even though the team has won 2 world series in the last 3 years. Now that's "fair weathered."
We're not expecting 40+ points a night; just more points in the first half than punts. Is that too much to ask? Guess so...

Again. So Hoffman is allowed to call our fans but we're not allowed to call him out?
I believe there's a word for that...
Hoffman is a great WR. No question. Had he played last week the game would have been different, but I don't hold that against him. Who am I to judge whether he's hurt or not.
What I do hold against him is his critic of those that support him. He's looking a gift horse in the mouth. Austin Collie said much the same back when he was a Cougar and I had the same words for Collie.
It isn't that we are all so privileged to watch them play football. It's that they are all so privileged to have us watch them play football. No fans, no football.
Only thing that's keeping ping pong from becoming a multi-billion dollar industry is fan support.
Hoffman may get away with criticizing fans now as a college player, but try that in the NFL and he'll get chased out of town.

You may be having a little trouble with the definition of "fair weather fans." It doesn't mean fans who aren't there when the team is winning 2 of 3 championships, it means fans who don't remain loyal when things are going badly. There is no time limit in the definition. I believe this fits the definition pretty well, and I strongly feel that Hoff has more right to complain than we do at this point (see previous post). If there was ever a time our team needs fans instead of trolls, it's now. To all BYU fans: please wake up and grow up. Help instead of hinder.

Was he calling you out Gunk, is that why your upset? I don't consider myself a fair weather fan. I get mad and upset etc. but I think that's normal. I still cheer on BYU the next week.
I'm going to assume gunk that you still follow the cougs and will watch the games. In my book that doesn't make you a fair weather fan.
Air wolf is a fair weather fan for example.( reverse fair weather fan) Are you sticking up for him and fans like him? I'm suprised anyone would stick up for fair weather fans. It's their loss if they want to stop following the team when they aren't winning.
The post I made at the beginning explains my view on why players speak out vs when fans speak out.
All said and done Twitter/facebook are a horrible idea for college athletes. Players can avoid all this crap by staying away from ALL media outlets during the season.

He didn't call out our fans. He called out our "former fans". Fans that jumped off the bandwagon last saturday night.. I have no problem with him calling those "fans" out.

We've all seen this offensive display before...
Exactly
This was a bad move by Hoff. Players & Coaches should NEVER blanket criticize the fans like that. Such a bad move.
The offense was offensive to watch. And it's been that way for a couple years. And my saying that does NOT make me a fair weather fan. I've been loyally following BYU football since before Hoff was born. I've seen the good and the bad. And I've NEVER given up on the team. Never stopped watching. Even during Crowton's worst years when the only way to watch the games was to rig up a screen and projector at the stake center and watch until 3am Eastern Time.
The offense sucked. That's just a fact.
I'm tired of Bronco and his players wanting the fans to do nothing but sing praises and give standing ovations. Just freaking play some good offense and give us something to cheer for. I will always be a BYU fan. And I cheer for team no matter what. I never boo our players. But I also am not gonna say I enjoyed that Virginia game. Or say that the offense played well. If Hoff thinks that makes me a fair weather fan then he has a lot to learn.
