Re: Options Sans Davies
I don't know, yes it's depressing to lose a player like Davies, but "Davies was just 2 of 6 from the field with 6 boards and 4 points in a foul-plagued, 27-minute showing at SDSU." This hardly sounds like a guy BYU cannot do without. But this definitely hurts our depth in the post, but have little concern that BYU cannot win without Davies, and I'm betting BYU takes NM apart tonight--then all the talk about the sky is falling and the end of the world will be gone.
Indeed, there could be a game down the road, in the MWC tournament, or in the NCAAs where the absence of Davies costs BYU the game, but it certainly won't be every game, and I don't believe it's going to be this week.
The other four starters do most of the scoring and playmaking anyway. If JImmer makes one more basket and Hartsock makes one more basket, and Hartsock, Obouo and Anderson get two more rebounds apiece, they have compensated for Davis' absence.
The sun will come up again tomorrow.

Re: Options Sans Davies
Statistically, he may not have had much of a role in the SDSU game. But his first bucket really set the tone for the entire game: we're coming at you HARD, and we're going to answer EVERYTHING. It was pretty epic, missed foul shot notwithstanding. On the defensive side, he was a huge factor in all the missed opportunities, whether he was credited for a block or a rebound or not. 6'9" dudes that can run and jump like Davies do not grow on trees. He will be missed. I hope our game plan can compensate, via a smaller lineup with a faster tempo or with our remaining bigs stepping way up. Either way, it's a taller task than Saturday's box score would indicate.bball wrote:I don't know, yes it's depressing to lose a player like Davies, but "Davies was just 2 of 6 from the field with 6 boards and 4 points in a foul-plagued, 27-minute showing at SDSU." If the yewts take the field and there are no BYU fans to pour beer on, will anybody come?

Yep, Davies will be missed and I don't see anyone filling in good enough for a deep tourney run. We are no longer a top 10 team much less a top 20 team.
The stat that stands out to me from the NM game...BYU outrebounded 42-15...

Ya. good call folks who thought we wouldnt miss Brandon. NOt sure we win with him tonight. But when the team is "dieing by the 3", you gotta go inside. Oh, wait -ZERO INSIDE GAME.

Davies was a threat down low. Teams knew it. They had to plan for it and they couldn't ignore him because he could score. Now...dmcougar wrote:Ya. good call folks who thought we wouldnt miss Brandon. Opponents can stack the perimeter on defense. They can give up a forward on Jimmer.

Re: Options Sans Davies
Jimmer scored 43 in that game, and we won despite being massively out rebounded, almost two to one, because SDSU couldn't hit a shot and we were shooting great.bball wrote:I don't know, yes it's depressing to lose a player like Davies, but "Davies was just 2 of 6 from the field with 6 boards and 4 points in a foul-plagued, 27-minute showing at SDSU." That game was an anomaly. This is what we look like without Davies and an inside presence. What a shame.
