Yes. Great comment. I was a Heaps guy but now I'm a Nelson guy, and excited about it. Watching the Hawaii game highlights that were posted recently was awesome.IowaCougar wrote:Can we get behind the Cougar quarterback, and enjoy the ride?

If Riley wants to be a legend then get us to a BCS Bowl an then win it. At that point he will be a legend. But given he only has one more year and he has never even played a full year as a starter, I don't think he will be a byu legend.

Tough criteria to become a legend, but then at least he'd join the ranks of our other legends, err, legend I guess, since you could only possibly include Robbie Bosco as accomplishing something similar to that.jonnylingo wrote:If Riley wants to be a legend then get us to a BCS Bowl an then win it. What a great group of QB legends BYU would be known for then, Bosco and Nelson.

I think he would be all by himself. Bosco did not get us to a BCS Bowl, let alone win one. He got us to the Holiday Bowl and in a memorable and gutty performance got us past a 6-5 Michigan team by about 7 points iirc. Tulsa is as good as that Michigan team and Bosco beat noone of particular note.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

Re: Is Riley a legend in the making?
It is becoming obvious to me that people's expectations of BYU football are becoming so unreasonable as to defy all logic. I am getting really frustrated over it. We have a coach who has taken BYU football from the brink of disaster, finished better in his conference then the guy up north twice as many times (with less talent) but is viewed as inferior because we didn't go undefeated and to a BCS bowl game once. We have a QB that took over a team headed for disaster, played really well and led us to a 9 win (maybe 10 win) season and he will only be viewed as a good qb if he can lead us to an undefeated season next year and a BCS bowl win. Like you said Hawkwing, only one BYU qb ever lead BYU to an undefeated season and couldn't do it with everyone from the 84 team returning in 85. I may have to retire from cougarcorner for a while. I quit listening to talk radio because of all the irrational negativity, may have to do it here too.hawkwing wrote:Tough criteria to become a legend, but then at least he'd join the ranks of our other legends, err, legend I guess, since you could only possibly include Robbie Bosco as accomplishing something similar to that.jonnylingo wrote:If Riley wants to be a legend then get us to a BCS Bowl an then win it. Re: Is Riley a legend in the making?
I am mostly convinced it is the younger generation (I'm not that old) that has unrealistic expectations. If you grew up watching BYU football in the 80s and 90s, there is no way you consider an undefeated season and BCS game the only mark of true success. BYU doesn't have that kind of history, and the great BYU QBs didn't beat anyone all that great. The best win was probably Detmer against #1 Miami in 1990 and he lost 3? games that year.frdbtr wrote:It is becoming obvious to me that people's expectations of BYU football are becoming so unreasonable as to defy all logic. Now if BYU didn't have an honor code and higher academic standards to deal with, then yes, I would be disappointed by the lack of BCS games given the facilities and fan following. But we recruit from a very small pool, which limits our depths and makes us an underdog against most great football programs. That's why I love rooting for BYU. We do more with less than most other teams. BYU is a top 25 team most years and that is about all it will ever be. It will never be a perennial national championship contender, nor do I think the BOT cares about that. A 10 win season is a great season. Going to a BCS bowl once a decade, or being deserving of that is about all you can expect out of BYU. They were deserving in 1984, 1996, and 2001(Losses didn't come until after they were passed over).
So, if Bronco doesn't produce an undefeated or BCS worthy season by 2020, I guess we can be disappointed. So far, Bronco has surpassed Lavell in most categories against better competition--you know, teams actually built to defend the forward pass. There's no reason to believe he will not have that BCS worthy season in the next 8 years.

Maybe Sarkisian too with the Cotton Bowl back in its glory days.hawkwing wrote:Tough criteria to become a legend, but then at least he'd join the ranks of our other legends, err, legend I guess, since you could only possibly include Robbie Bosco as accomplishing something similar to that.jonnylingo wrote:If Riley wants to be a legend then get us to a BCS Bowl an then win it. BYU QB Factory = Bosco, Sarkisian. Looking at the output, it must be an organic factory powered by cow farts.

Re: Is Riley a legend in the making?
Can't include Sark because 96 had the "Bowl alliance" which was the predecessor to the BCS and BYU got snubbed for it so 96 was a failure. Sark would not be one of our greats.snoscythe wrote:Maybe Sarkisian too with the Cotton Bowl back in its glory days.hawkwing wrote:Tough criteria to become a legend, but then at least he'd join the ranks of our other legends, err, legend I guess, since you could only possibly include Robbie Bosco as accomplishing something similar to that.jonnylingo wrote:If Riley wants to be a legend then get us to a BCS Bowl an then win it. Re: Is Riley a legend in the making?
My marks for a great season:
--Beat Utah
--Get Conference Championship (or if indy, get 10 wins)
--Win the bowl game.
If Riley beats Utah, gets us 10 wins in a very difficult schedule next year, and wins another bowl game, I don't know how you couldn't call that a great season.
