Note to Riley

Postgame interview comment: 'Our inability to get yards in big chunks when we need them is our biggest problem'. Uh, no... your arm strength is, along with erratic, inconsistent play.
I have read this statement alot. While I believe that BYU needs to move on from Riley Nelson, I have a hard time with this statement. Utah State (a Division 1 school which is actually bowl eligible), was upset enough about losing Riley Nelson that they pursued a change in the rules regarding missionary service. Riley Nelson is certainly capable of running the offense. Jake Heaps was also capable of running the offense. It is not Nelson's ability that I am upset with, it is his performance. I believe that Lark, Munns, etc, are all capable as well. We need to see if one of them can perform live. As we saw last year, talent is not always the issue. Sometimes, talent is overshadowed by performance.Airwolf1984 wrote:Riley is barely a division I-A QB, let alone the pure drop-back passer with an arm needed to make the Y offense go.
Utah State was the only division I-A school, along with division I-AA Montana State (I think it was) to offer Riley a football scholarship and it was at a time when the Aggies were still posting losing records every year in football. Riley was solid against the competition he played against as a freshman in Logan before his mission, which is why USU was upset to lose him to BYU, but now that he is no longer facing old WAC schools week in and week out, his limitations and ceiling are being exposed.rblack wrote:I have read this statement alot. That said, I am not arguing that Nelson is even close to the most talented quarterback we have had, I simply cannot support the assertion that he is "barely a Division 1-A QB."
Get your sources straight and then we'll talk.Airwolf1984 wrote:Utah State was the only division I-A school, along with division I-AA Montana State (I think it was) to offer Riley a football scholarship and it was at a time when the Aggies were still posting losing records every year in football.
