Roster changes during spring football
So I checked out the official BYU football roster on https://byucougars.com/roster/football at the start of spring football and checked today now that the spring game happened yesterday and noticed some changes during spring camp.
New names that appeared over the spring:
LB Jonah Chatelain, Freshman, Whitehouse, TX (HS class of 2020, must be a RM?)
K Matthias Dunn, Freshman, Heber City, UT (HS class of 2019, RM)
OL James Durling, Freshman, Benton, AR (6-7, 315, HS class of 2019, must be a RM?)
DS Nic Harris, Sophomore, Salt Lake City, UT (Peru State College--NAIA school in Nebraska for 2018 and 2019, HS class of 2018 at East HS)
WR Taden Krzymenski, Freshman, Haines City, FL (HS class of 2022)
DL Hamaua Tuione, Freshman, Riverton, UT (HS class of 2018, RM?)
Name not on roster after spring:
WR Alex Anderson, Freshman, Herriman, UT (HS class of 2020, received a preferred walk-on in 2020)
Transfer Portal
K Cash Peterman, Sophomore, Chandler, AZ (still listed on roster but is known to be in the transfer portal)

Re: Roster changes during spring football
Also, this OL size is crazy to me. Out of 17 guys, only 5 are under 300 pounds and only 1 is under 290 pounds. 77% are 6' 4" or taller.
Chidester, 6' 8" 290
Keim 6' 8" 310
Durling 6' 7" 315
Little 6' 7" 295
Tai 6' 7" 330
Griffin 6' 6" 285
Suamataia 6' 6" 315
Fitzgerald 6' 5" 305
Ostler 6' 5" 330
Pay 6' 5" 312
Ward 6' 5" 290
Lapuaho 6' 4" 310
Soifua 6' 4" 296
Dawe 6' 3" 305
Falaniko 6' 3" 315
Makasini 6' 3" 325
Maile 6' 2" 300

Re: Roster changes during spring football
A few more changes:
Into the transfer portal goes
S Dean Jones, Sophomore
LB Logan Pili, Freshman
CB/LB George Udo, Senior
BYU also gets a commitment from Utah State transfer portal LB AJ Vongphachanh as a grad transfer. He should push for a starting spot/lots of playing time.
KSL sports is reporting the coaches are ramping up recruiting in the transfer portal again with the portal opening up for the spring window on Saturday with the intention of getting another 3-4 players.

Re: Roster changes during spring football
IN: OL Jake Eichorn, Weber State Sophomore (6'6", 295) from Beaver, UT
There are still a bunch of cuts that need to be made with the number of guys newly coming to fall camp. My list shows ~ 147 players. Some might be mission first guys I haven't accounted for yet, but my list has about 24 too many players for the after classes start roster size of 123.
The change in defense coaching/scheme could explain the large number of young players in the transfer portal who don't really fit what Jay Hill is wanting to do, or projects from the previous staff that don't have the connection with the new staff.

Re: Roster changes during spring football
Spring ball was their chance to show what they had. I heard 20 more were going to leave or move to PWO. That's a lot.

Per Jake Hatch on twitter, BYU defensive lineman Alema Pilimai announced he is done playing football as a member of the BYUfootball program as he prepares to graduate this week. He would have been a covid year senior.

Re: Roster changes during spring football
We saw WR Kody Epps in a shocker hit the transfer portal. OL Vae Soifua also hit the portal. He never saw the field last year as a true freshman.

Re: Roster changes during spring football
Tampering is probably involved with Epps. NCAA has to address this widespread problem.
