To quote John Denver, "blow up the TV" and the read a good book: Three Cups of Tea; Mountains Beyond Mountains; A Brief History on Time; The Creators; The Discoverers; A Thread of Grace; Mila 18; Shogun; 1776; Roots; Jesus the Christ (alltime favorite)

I've been reading "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell and "The Mind and the Brain" by Jeffrey Schwartz. They both sound extremely dry but they're incredibly fascinating.

Kate Atkinson's "Case Histories" is an absolutely riveting novel. I've found White Collar to be quite entertaining as far as tv goes.

Yeah, you can learn all sorts of things from books. Like how to build/fly your own plane. ;)

Never heard of it. What channel is it on, and what's it about?

ABC I think, it is cheesy but I like it, season 2 kicks off this weekend.

Jericho started out fantastic, but when the fans lobbied it to return they took it in a very strange direction.

I was one that lobbied for it to stay on the air. I paid to have some Nuts sent to the producer's office as part of the "I'm nuts for Jericho" campaign. We literally sent tons of nuts. Entire truckloads.

Sammich, your list of good shows is perfect. I've seen every episode of most of the shows on your list. 30 rock was my most recent find and I watched every episode up to the current over the last couple weeks. Great stuff.

Others you'll enjoy (some already mentioned)

Arrested Development -- really funny with great characters

The Unit -- very toughguy type show about military special forces

24 -- just pure awesomeness (but starts to repeat themes after a few seasons)

Jericho -- very good 1st season and then decent wrap-up of the story in a few more episodes

Prison Break -- the 1st season of this show is the best 22 episodes of TV ever....period....end of debate. I watched the entire 1st season in a couple days. I couldn't stop. The 2nd season is good. 3rd season is ok. 4th season is phenomenal as is the 5th season.

Smallville -- I was very skeptical at first, but it grows on you and is actually pretty fun

Simpsons -- longest running cartoon ever. that's all I have to say about that.

I collect DVR'd TV shows and I have a terabyte or so of them on my computer. I recently deleted a lot of shows to free up space, but I have all of arrested development. Shoot me a PM and I can give you instructions to access my FTP server to download the shows if you'd like. I access it from work and I've put a few seasons of the Simpsons on my work computer.

AND he wrote some really crappy music. But he was pretty good in "Oh God" with George Burns.

I skimmed through quickly, but I didn't notice either The Shield or Curb Your Enthusiasm mentioned. I'll give a nod to both the Firefly and Dexter recommendations. This season of Dexter has been pretty good, but I'm disappointed in John Lithgow. I like him normally, but not this time out. Jimmy Smits was much better last season.

I see some good shows recommended.

I second Dexter. I don't get Shotime, but I saw a couple of episodes and it was very addicting and well done.

My list:

Burn Notice

Chuck

Scrubs (reruns mostly)

Smallville (very creative interpretation of the Superman lore and Lois is easy on the eyes)

Glee (Makes fun of political correctness run amok)

Big Bang Theory

Supernatural (although it does take great liberties with God/Satan dichotomies)

House

Bones

24

Legend of the Seeker (in Boise, it's on Fox at 10pm Sundays. It is a Raimi produced show, so it has a Hercules/Zena feel to it.)

BYU Football/Basketball (My favorites)

NFL games involving NE, MN, and/or Indy.

On my blacklist: NBA and soccer

For you AD fans, very overrated show. Too predictable to me. Malcolm in the Middle was a much better show about dysfunctional families.

If you like Merlin, you'll like this. Set in the long ago, fantasy with sword of glory, virtuous witch, fatherly magician the weekly main good guys. My son loves it, is in its second season I believe.

My dad showed that to me and my brother when I was 15, I thought it was going to be lame (with my 'the world sucks and so does anything made before I was born' attitude), but I REALLY enjoyed it.

Yeah, I haven't seen it in a LONG time, but I do remember it was good movie and that Denver's acting was surprisingly good.

I used to find new TV shows to watch on Hulu while at work, but they just outlawed it here at work (streaming was too hard on our servers). So now my only TV time is in the evening after the kids are in bed, and my wife doesn't want to waste time exploring shows to see what's good (that's what I used to do at work). Does anyone have any recommendations?

What we've enjoyed watching:

Psych

Chuck

Fringe

Leverage

Heroes

30 Rock

The Office

Lost

Shows we liked okay but didn't suck us in:

Warehouse 13

Better Off Ted

Community

Battlestar Galactica

Merlin

I originally put a category of "shows that sucked" but I didn't want to offend anyone who just had different tastes. So does anyone have suggestions for things we might like?

for comedy - aqua teen hunger force
