We are playing SJSU, so the OF should have success. Riley will move it on them. To best evaluate, both QBs will get reps against the same D, and see who plays better. With reps being split 50/50, it is clear both are going to play. It will not be a rotating series deal like last year, but both guys will get multiple series to get it done. The competition is on. Time to sack up or hit the bench.

BYU WAS playing USU, so the OF should have HAD success. Only Riley was able to get points on the board. Same as the rest of the year. I think that has to be considered when choosing the starter/guy who is on the field most.

Good point. Lets face it, USU has a crummy pass defense. Everyone has been able to throw on them, except Jake Heaps. UCF had a statistically strong defense, but hadn't played anyone with an offense yet we couldn't pass on them. San Jose St. passing defense is virtually identical to USU's, so what makes us believe that Heaps would be able to accomplish what he couldn't against USU?

How dare you bring logic into this argument that won't fly here!!

This offense was designed for Heaps. All we saw on Friday night were QB draws (plays that already existed for Heaps...he ran one, in fact, just not as well as Riley) and Nelson's ability to create time by scrambling allowing receivers to get open. I saw Riley grossly over throw receivers multiple times, and I saw him nail a couple. I saw him make things happen by being elusive when the pocket collapsed and make first downs running.

So how many "grossly over thrown passes" did you see? Nelson threw only 4 passes that were incomplete and out of those four at least one was thrown at JJ's feet, so I think the phrase you used is grossly exaggerated.

I didn't keep a log of the incomplete passes, but Heaps's misses looked no worse than Riley's misses.

Riley's 1.5 quarters against USU proves nothing to me related to passing. His ability to will the team to a victory is, however, what the team needs right now.

Bottom line, Heaps needs to improve. The offense is designed for him. Riley may be able to cover for him while he does, but I just don't think Riley is enough of a passer to make it work long term.

But I could be wrong. Like I said, I didn't keep a pass-by-pass log of his throws on Saturday.

Lawboy--you said prior to the USU game that it should be the make-it-or-break-it for Heaps to see if he would improve (I believe you called it a "measuring stick" for Heaps). He didn't--in fact he was horrible against the worst defense we've faced to date. Now you are telling us that because SJSU is horrible, both quarterbacks should get a chance to prove themselves. Come on--Heaps had his shot to get it right against a cupcake, and he muffed it. To now suggest that he just needs another chance against another cupcake is a bit absurd. If you can't complete 50% against USU, you've proven your ineptitude. You called USU his measuring stick, and he showed his stuff. I think it's about time we quit wasting game time and in-season practice reps on Heaps, because he's proven that he can't get the job done even against USU.
