How would you react if BYU started Playing on Sunday

We've taken this for a 100% fact. So let's play in a fantasy world for a moment and assume that the church decides that for very limited events, say championships only or some other criteria, they would accept Sunday play in the Big 12.



BYu realizes they have graduates playing on Sunday all the time. They realize that even BYU campus has multiple full-time employees working on campus on Sundays, and that perhaps they decide that athletics is more of a service function than entertainment... or some other mumb-jumbo to justify it.



I'm curious how the fan base would react? Would you accept it, think it's a good thing, or just stop watching BYU on Sundays?

To me, it'd be a Pyrrhic victory - sure, we'd give more exposure to BYU athletics, but we'd be undermining the foundations that are the very reason we want BYU to get more exposure.



I think it was Sno who said (during the Davies HC debacle) that if you remove the HC, BYU becomes the Mormon Baylor. I think Sunday play applies as well. I'd still love BYU, I'd still follow the sports teams, and I'd still want to send my kids there, but I would feel like we were mortgaging our identity for something temporary and fleeting.

I'd lose respect for them, barring a revelation related to during General Conference that Sundays are no big deal anymore and that it will further the work to play on Sundays.

I would have a hart time coming back to BYU after my mission. It would become a school based on hypocrisy.

This will never happen in my opinion. I understand this is a hypothetical, but BYU will never compromise themselves for money or exposure IMO. In fact, BYU would dump its programs before Sunday play, they would get just as much exposure for doing that than playing on Sundays.

It wouldn't matter what I thought because the world would end that day.

i honestly don't know how I'd react. It would be interesting, to say the least.



I guess I would equate it to having a hero, someone you really admire. One day you find out that they aren't 100% what you thought they were. You're definitely disappointed, and depending on what you find out, you may lose all respect for them. Most of the time, though, you learn to admire only certain things about them.



To attend BYU, you actually have to live to a higher standard than is "required" to be a member of the church in good standing. In some ways I admire that. In other ways I don't understand it. I don't think BYU could continue to ask for that from it's students, if they don't show that for themselves.



Compromising standards for money/exposure isn't something that I think BYU should do, especially for what turns out to be, in the end, nothing more than a game.

I wouldn't react, its never going to happen. Just delete this thread.

That would be fantastic. It'd give me a reason to golf on Sundays instead of fulfilling my priesthood responsibilities. :P

How would you react if the church said that we will now follow Satan and do only evil? How would you react if the church said that every member must now drink a six pack every day? How would you react if the church said you could now only have relations with monkeys? What other ridiculous hypotheticals can we come up with to waste our time?

BYU would cease to be the BYU I went to. It would no longer be special.



But I don't see this happening...ever.

To be honest, I'd probably lose interest and become a Cincy or Baylor fan first and foremost, and I'd probably start getting involved with either CU or CSU locally as well.



The draw of BYU, for me, has always been the fact that they keep themselves (for the most part) to a higher standard than every other university competing at this level, and they are largely successful in spite of those self-imposed handcuffs. I follow BYU because they are unique in carrying the standard of the values I subscribe to.



As soon as BYU starts becoming "just another private school," I lose my emotional tie to the school. Yeah, it's my alma mater, but I've got other alma maters and schools close to home that I can follow more easily.

When you are playing at a professional level in any field, you must work to support yourself or your family on whatever day is required. This is not true in student athletics, and hopefully one day per week can always remain sanctioned to the Lord. I've been in other countries where the Church has services on different days, depending upon the the host country. There is nothing "magical" about a Sunday; only that one day in seven be spent reverencing the Lord...and, sorry, Birdie...as beautiful and uplifting as a game of golf in the great outdoors can be, we've gotta remember those danged Ten Commandments. ;)

I'd watch the games.

There have been changes in church policies in the past. If special circumstances were allowed for Sunday play I'd approach it like any other change in church policy.

We have always taped (nowadays Tivo) the Superbowl, and then we get up at 4AM Monday morning and watch the game then before we go to school/work and before we see the score. My parents did it with us growing up, and my brothers and I continue the tradition.



We call it Superbowl Monday, and we announce it and invite everyone in opening exercises for priesthood meetings on Sunday, and we generally have 3 or 4 other people from the ward come over with chips/dip and their kids.

I do watch the super bowl and other shows on TV on Sunday. I don't think that's hypocritical. I'm a fan of BYU because they are something special and more. If they are no longer anything special then I lose respect for them and they are no different from any other team out there.

Dude. Don't you know the Sabbath is on Saturday? At least that's what my 7th Day Adventist friend told me growing up. Maybe she'd start watching BYU sports and convert.

I'd still probably watch them.



Maybe even attend if it didn't spill over my church attendance/duties. Me and about 3,000 other people could sit where we wanted :P



That reminds me, I have a lesson to teach Sunday... I should probably read up on that.

My thoughts exactly. What sets BYU apart is what makes it special to me. Get rid of the honor code or start comprising standards, and all of a sudden I'm not rooting for David versus Goliath anymore. I would be rooting for just another Philistine versus Goliath. If my choice is among all Philistines, I might as well just root for Goliath. There's a lot less heartache and pain in that. But its worth it to me for BYU because BYU IS a special place.
