BYU getting scores, clawing back in it, but our D needs some stops. I think that is our weakness this year - we miss the D of Emery, Collinsworth, Magnusson, etc. We can't rely on just offense - especially when we have trouble getting our 3's and poor FT shooting.

These refs don't seem to understand what a charge is. All this flopping is disgusting.

SM is undeafeted at home. Gonzaga will be hard pressed to beat them if SM plays similarly. My concern is how many weaknesses SM exploited against BYU. We need to correct these in the coming weeks or we will be lucky to be the #3 team in the WCC.

Davies monster game - 28 pts - not as much support from other players (Matt and Noah with 13 each, Abouo with 9). However, neither player was on at the same time. FT shooting 56%.



SM - 55%, 48% (3 pt.), they had an incredible advantage at FT line.



98 points given up is unacceptable. However, our achilles heel appears to be poor defense on many levels - especially forward and guard positions.

Good Luck the rest of the year. And, as far as the officiating goes, it's actually a bit better as we got a new assigning secretary 2 years ago & he started bringing in Pac 10 (12) guys.

Regardless, I don't think Byu w Jimmer and Jax would we beat SMC tonight. And I think they school Gonzaga as well. Credit smc. They played a great game and kicked our trash.

And it wouldn't have mattered how many beneficial foul calls BYU got, they couldn't make the FTs anyway.

Few thoughts.



First, I think we just need to get used to sloppy play from this team. Appears to be the norm for this team. Our young, inexperienced backcourt is just that young and inexperienced. SMC game planned for us perfectly. To beat BYU, all you need to do is pressure our guards. Let Davies and Noah get theirs, just hold the guards in check.



Zylstra is a waste of space on the court. Either Winder or Rogers when healthy should get his min. He's playing shooting guard. It's the shooting guard's job to shoot the ball. A shooting guard that doesn't score or play lock down defense is pointless. Winder plays better D and doesn't smack opponents in the head when they are shooting three pointers.



Abouo should not be allowed to drive the ball down the court. It results in a turnover 8 out of 10 times.



Carlino needs to stick to spot up shooting. He can't dribble penetrate and score. SMC fan next to me at the game called it every time Carlino took a shot. He's that predictable.



BYU needs to stop collapsing on the post the moment an opponent sticks their big toe in the key. It leaves us completely vulnerable to outside shooters, and it's a whole lot easier to shoot 50% from the arc when you're wide open.

This has been the game plan for several years. Clearly the SMC coaches watched film of SDSU, UNM and UNLV playing BYU. Play BYU's guards extremely tight and physical and hope the refs let you get away with it.

Agreed. Hartsock and Davies are going to have to guard some guys 1v1. The 3 ball is killing BYU this year. Better to give up a layup than a momentum energizing 3.

We play zone to protect Zylstra, Cusick and our bigs when they are in foul trouble. So if we start playing Winder and Harrison more we can play more man.
