I really like you guys, but...

Sure the refs were bad. Every team in the conference has to put up with them as so do their fans. With three minutes to go, the fouls were even but the BYU fans acted like the Cougars were the only team getting called.

The fans were a major factor in BYU's loss and you guys can't be proud about it. They distracted the team, got a technical and whipped Dave Rose, usually calm and collected, into such a frenzy that he got a technical right when the Cougars were coming back. It doesn't matter whether the call was right or wrong (it was obviously wrong), but the ensuing technical, not the call, took BYU out of the game.

Cut the whining about the refs. It's not doing you or BYU any good and it won't in the future.

Oldestlion, you'll have to forgive the fan base. We don't have years of experience dealing with such atrocious officiating. Closest we've come are Pac10/12 Refs. WCC Refs are absolutely horrible.

Game was out reach 10 min in. Our guys once again came out flat and played horrible perimeter defense. Why Rose keeps going with Zylstra and Cusick is beyond me. To be fair, Noah's zone rotation is average at best.

I'm actually okay with our fans throwing paper onto the court. Not like it was bottles or heavy objects. Refs were horrible. Good way to provide feedback. You can bet as a result of the reaction people will be talking about it. Discussions lead to change.

Unlike oldestlion, I am not content just sitting back and accepting such lowly officiating.

We played flat the first half and SM took advantage of our poor perimeter defense and offense.

Officiating was terrible - terrible on both sides. Those refs should not do another game until they have a chance to be taught about the impact of lousy crowds. For BYU, many of the poor calls were momentum killers.

The crowd actually inspired the team to be more aggressive in the second half. We play that way in the first half, and we have an entirely different game. We just need to put together 4 quarters of intense play.

Regarding the fans, throwing things like shirts, towels, while poor taste, was needed the first time (warning). The refs needed to get the message that they were stinking up the joint. Thus far, these WCC refs are putrid, but we will have to learn to play through it as did SM.

We will have a chance for a reprive against Gonzaga. Let's hope the team learned something about the intensity they need to bring all 4 quarters. I also hope that the fans don't cause a negative point swing by throwing things, but that the atmosphere and intensity is intimidating w/o being over the line.

Usually when we are down as many points many of our passive fans head for the parking lot. many of those stayed because they wanted to cheer for our team and against the blow-hard whistle freaks. I really do believe they felt the intensity and wanted to not quit on their team as usual and join the unhappy throngs of angry fans in cheering for the comeback, partly in denial that such a supposed and want-to-be big time college basketball conference could allow such lack of skilled, professional refs. don't anyone bother saying the refs didn't lose this for byu. I get our lack of outside shooting. had we been within 2 or 3 points and had to witness such crack-smoking refs, there would have been more than paper thrown on the court.

You're right on the mark, SpiffCoug! I know that things can get emotional, but we came out looking like an idiot. It's one thing to boo the refs, and quite another to throw crap out on the floor. What were those dolts thinking? They made all BYU fans look foolish and we, as BYU fans, should do all we can to stop it!

OldestLion - although I don't agree with your post, I'm glad you took the time to post here. I'd love to see more posts by reasonable WCC brothers such as yourself.

I wish you would pass this on to northerncougar. We seem to have a difference of opinion and now he's getting into family in a negative way - not a good indicator of what BYU is all about. See his posts and mine in "Gonzaga."

Oldestlion, there were nearly 24,000 BYU fans watching Saturday's game in-person. At home in front of televisions there were thousands and thousands more. Are you really letting one fan's opinion dictate your perception of an entire fan base, a fanbase which more than likely out numbers the rest of the WCC men's basketball fan base combined? If so, you’re prejudice.

It's not that you have a different opinion; it's that you're prescribing one BYU fan's opinion and the actions of a few to the rest. Suddenly the actions of one fan on an anonymous site and a few hundred students at a game that got a bit too emotional reflect an entire population? Geez…just look at the majority of comments on this board and you’ll see that isn’t true. Most are embarrassed by the throwing of trash on the court.

Can’t tell me LMU fans have never crossed the line. Are you telling me the fans at the LMU game holding signs making cracks at Mormons reflect the entire LMU fan base?

So far, I’ve been thoroughly disappointed with the “welcoming” BYU has thus far received from WCC fans. It’s a far cry from the sentiment expressed 3 – 4 months ago.

I'm overreacting. OK? Yes, LMU fans have crossed the line and we somewhat learned our lesson. One thing we did learn, however, is that attempted fan intimidation of the refs works against the offending team. Don't be surprised if the whistle blows quickly and often if the BYU fans start up again against the Zags.

Trolls be trolling.

Can we ignore/boot this guy already? He doesn't have anything to add to any discussion that I have seen. All he needs to do is mention Mendenhall, and he is "airwolf" revisited.

You expected more from us? Great.

I expected to join a league that had their $@%! together. Clearly we both didn't get our "expectations" met. Fortunately basketball has a tourney that all conferences can play into, otherwise Gonzaga and St Mary would have already been on the first train out to a conference that actually cares about major sports.

Oldest Lion if you are going to draw conclusions about the entire BYU fan base based on the stupidity of a few, well I guess you think the entire Catholic Church is a bunch of predators because of the evil of some of its priests ? Pretty screwed up way of judging things.Get off your high horse and talk. some. BB. Your story about the one LMU BB player was cool.

BYU is in the process of learning it's lesson too. As I mentioned, we don't have the "benefit" of years of experience dealing with such poor officiating. Our players don't know how to react to it and the fans are certainly adjusting as well.

I can almost guarantee that there won't be fan behavior like that again at the MC for a long time. BYU will address it.

Those refs were terrible, got rattled, took it personally and then involved the crowd by calling the technicals. If that first warning hadn't happened, and the refs simply allowed BYU to deal with the situation, I'm sure the other technical wouldn't have happened. Refs aren't at the game for crowd control. They are present to make sure a fair, consistent game is called.

I'm not making excuses for the crowd. Regardless of how the refs handled it, the crowd should have kept their cool. But the refs did their best to agitate the idiots out there.

What the refs could/should have done was call Dave Rose over and have him get on the PA and tell the fans/students to knock it off. That we don't throw things on the court at BYU. That we're above that. Instead, they chose to antagonize the crowd even more.

I agree - especially on the "warning" call. It was obviously a flop that exactly mirrored the comeback killing flop that happened in Moraga, which is why the students were hopping mad.

That said, Rose wasn't going to argue tht call, that is where the officials should have called him over. Had an even keeled Rose say that nothing should be thrown on the court, and with an even keel Rose on the PA, the Students would have simmered down, for, the students (rightfully) LOVE Rose, had Rose said something, it would have been like Coach K at Duke telling his student section to stop, they would have.
