Brayden GreenI'm not sure why everyone is writing off Carlino as a failure, or having a failed season. He was our 2nd or 3rd best player every single night, sometimes our best AS A FRESHMAN! When was the last time you saw a freshman come in to BYU at PG and average:
(Also, these stats were against WCC and ranked competition, not all the junior high schools that BYU started the season playing against, and playing ten less games than everyone else.)
12.7 ppg (3rd best), 4.75 apg (1st), 3.1 rpg (6th) 41% from the field (7th), 35% from 3 (5th), 1.4 spg (1st), .3 blocks (5th) and 2.82 turnovers per game.
He also shot 75% from the line (2nd best)
He was also one of the best man defenders that we had out there, regularly guarding the most athletic guy on the floor (or the "next quickest guy" when Abuou was in.)
I just don't get it. He is not even close to the reason that we lost this year to good teams. Someone please tell me why/how Carlino single handedly lost us all these games like you all seem to claim... that you expected too much of a freshman is on you, not him. The worst thing Carlino ever did this season was start the season lights out against Baylor. That made you (and the media) all go out of your heads crazy for him, and you forgot that he was a frosh. It has been mentioned before, he played MUCH MUCH better than any frosh we have had at PG in the last decade or two... including Jimmer.
We lost because our zone defense was absolutely torrid, we couldn't hit free throws to save our lives (only 3 guys on the team over 70%), and injuries. Period. You have Rogers and Ccoll out there, I don't think we lose more than 5 games. Carlino, Charles, Rogers, Davies and Hartsock would have all played MUCH better zone than our current lineup. You add in 13 ppg on 40% 3pt, 75%-ish from the line, and a 6-8 body with a 7'4 reach (i'm making that up, but have you seen those arms?) averaging 2 blocks on the wings and contesting shot after shot, and you have a completely different team.
All in all, the Cougs had a great season, INCLUDING a first round loss or non-inclusion. Anything above that and I will literally freak out.
