Worst tournament team to get a win

How lucky were we that our first tournament game was against a 14 seed. probably the easiest win we'll ever have in the tournament.

And let's face it. this was not the best BYU team we've ever seen. Major, major flaws as well as lack of consistency.

But we STILL made the tournament. And we STILL got a win out of it. AND we managed to pull an NCAA record while we were at it. Great experience for a very young team. We were simply outplayed and out-coached. but we made it here when we probably shouldn't have and gave the number 3 seed a fairly decent game.

I still don't (and likely never will) consider a win in the play-in game as a tournament win. It is something better than a conference tournament win and something less than a "real" tournament win. If they made the 8-9 teams be play-in games I might consider counting it, but really it is a less-than-average tournament team playing against another less-than-average tournament team and should not be considered of the same quality as any lower seed beating a higher seed.

if the refs blow a call, and my team wins the game. I'm not going to forfeit the win even if it was the wrong call.

I don't think this is a very good analogy. I'm not saying it is necessarily wrong to have play-in games for the 14 seed. No mistake was made choosing BYU for the play-in and the win was awesome and provided good experience. I just don't consider it to be on the same level as a "real" tournament win as a lower seed against a higher seed.

You can also consider BYU's loss to Marquette a win if you'd like.

NCAA rules BYU vs. Iona is a win. I'll take it.

Iona's rpi was around 40 or better than ours. Not a bad win. I believe it counts for when tourney money is distributed to the conferences. So +1 for us.

If we're talking worst BYU team to win a tourney game, sure.

But I'm sure worse teams have gotten wins in the play-ins before. Especially back when the only play in was the 64 vs. 65 game.

Maybe BYU's win last year shouldn't count either because it was against a 14 seed.

Fact is, Iona was ranked as a 14 seed in the NCAA tournament and we beat them.

Iona was a 12-seed in practice. Kentucky will sure count their win over a 16-seed. /rant

Marquette ain't no good. They only beat a 14 seed today. maybe they are the worst team in the tourney.

Not only did they only beat a 14 seed, they beat a crappy 14 seed that was lucky to beat another crappy 14 seed. Even if they win it all this year, they still suck, it just shows that everyone else that they play sucks worse than they do... and that is all because they played us in the first round*

* I know that the NCAA calls it the "second round," but really, what do they know? I get to decide what things are called. My neighbor keeps telling me that his name is Brian, because that's what his stupid birth certificate says it is, but I call him Trevor, because, I get to decide what people's names are AND what is and isn't an NCAA tournament game... so sue me

Can we get the NCAA to call the games what they really are. They are "fishtail" games. I would love to see more of them, maybe four to eight more teams feeding into the top seeds (two fishtails per bracket- North South, west , midwest). I also wonder what it would be like if they had the first games played on the same floor as the championship game. Kind of in a "the championship starts and end here" way. They could possibly have opening ceremonies and maybe even awards.

I think March Madness is one of the greatest sporting events, especially since almost everyone at the end of the year still has a chance to win the NC, so giving it a little more life would seem justified.
