That business degree is going to make him somewhere around 65k a year starting out, going up after that. So... yeah I think he got a fair shake on the deal. Rose honored his commitment to bringing in a player and helping that player graduate.

Rose is also honoring one of his players that deserves a scholarship (Cusick) and definitely doing the best for the team, and this decision is in the best interests of the fans and boosters, too.

Best of luck to you, Nick, and judging by your response sounds like this was a great "teaching moment" for you. There are no absolutes in life. Make no assumptions.

Now, don't be a fool and transfer to a different school. You'll ride the bench at any school you transfer to. Swallow your pride and get your graduate degree at BYU. Your wife is about to graduate, you have no chance of playing professionally, so uprooting your family so you can practice with another team is extremely short sighted.

Besides, get a solid summer job and a part-time job during the school year and you'll be able to pay for graduate school just fine. Should have plenty of time in your schedule now for a job now that basketball is done.

I feel bad for Martineau because it always hurts to not make the cut, but he played 3 years for a Division 1 school. Most people get cut years before that, so don't cry about it. And sure it stinks to have to pay for school when you thought it was going to be free, but first you got into BYU's grad school, when most people can't, and most people have to pay for school themselves, so don't cry about that either.

I think he lost any slack with the fanbase after his "Jimmer doesn't play defense" quotes to Rick Reilly last year.

i'd love for martineau to go to the Yew.

and I'd love for them to play Sharp often in that game, and watch Sharp run all over him. It'd be GREAT TV!

I have no doubt Nick could start for Utah next season.

The only problem would be he doesn't have any eligibility to transfer the year after starting for Utah.

It's a requirement that all Ute starters transfer the next year.

From Greg Wrubell's blog:
Martineu's frustration is somewhat understandable, yet the public expression of disappointment and subsequent no-show at the team's season-ending banquet (during which he was given two individual awards) created a sour ending to his BYU playing tenure. Asked if he wished it could have ended differently for Martineau, from a public perception standpoint, Rose said: "Every player, once they leave the program, can handle that however they feel fit."

Summing up the situation, Rose acknowledged that "this was a really tough decision by our staff, because he did have a year of eligibility left, but we did feel that his role was going to pretty similar to what it had been the last three years. The fact that (Martineau) had his degree didn't make the decision easier, but did allow us to move forward in a real positive way."

Greg tweeted/facebooked earlier today:

Nick was understandably disappointed/upset by the decision, but speaking personally, I think it was unfortunate the way he ended things.

...

Nick's choosing to speak out, and choosing not to attend the team banquet (at which he received two awards) wasn't how I saw things ending

and someone replied:
As a BYU fan, I want to speak out on how frustrating it was to have him on scholarship.

Haha...that's awesome.

I can tell already Nick isn't going to amount to much of a businessman. He already broke one of the first rules: don't burn bridges.

He missed that day in the Marriott Management school, he was too busy calling in to Rick Reiley to throw Jimmer under the bus.
