Wrubell published bad info. Again, I've gone over this multiple times. But to recap:

The BCS rules currently set in place are to determine 5-7 BCS conferences, per their official website. How can you have 5 without dropping one?

Okay, this is from the BCS website http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/eligibility
Standards for Future BCS Automatic Qualification

The champions of the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conferences will have annual automatic qualification for a BCS game through the 2013 regular season, based on mathematical standards of performance during the 2004-2007 regular seasons.

The 2008-2011 regular seasons will be evaluated under the same standards to determine if other conferences will have annual automatic qualification for the games after the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons. The champions of no more than seven conferences will have annual automatic berths.

If the BCS continues under the same or similar format, conferences will be evaluated on their performances during the 2010-2013 regular seasons to determine which conferences will have automatic qualification for the bowls that will conclude the 2014-2017 regular seasons.

The evaluation data includes the following for each conference (1) the ranking of the highest-ranked team in the final BCS standings each year, (2) the final regular-season rankings of all conference teams in the computer rankings used by the BCS each year and (3) the number of teams in the top 25 of the final BCS standings each year.

Conference agreements with bowls will continue. The Pac-10 and Big Ten champions will host the Rose Bowl if their teams are not in the BCS national championship game. Likewise, the Southeastern Conference champion will host the Sugar Bowl, ACC champion will host the Orange Bowl and Big 12 champion will host the Fiesta Bowl.

A second reading of the third paragraph implies that based on performance through 2008-2011 a 7th conference may be added for 2012-2013. The big 6 have AQ status through 2013.

Then, based on 2010-2013 any conference that meets AQ status will be given AQ status (no more than 7 conferences) for 2014-2017. So, in theory, if the SEC or Big 12 tanked and the MWC failed to improve in 2010-2013 and failed to meet AQ status you could have 5 AQ conferences, but only starting in 2014. Before 2014 you could only add a 7th conference. After 2014 they will take all conferences that meet AQ criteria (no more than 7).

I guess I answered my own question.

This is correct. Rules don't allow BCS to drop any conference until at least 2013.

Link? But you are correct that if you currently have six conference and then have five, you have dropped on.

I went to the official site and couldn't find it.

Here's the link to eligibility. It's all the way at the bottom.

I saw that, but nowhere did I read that five to seven conferences would have eligibility, thereby potentially dropping one conference.

To me is says the the "other conferences will be evaluated" based on 2008-2011 evaluation. I read that as saying the MWC, WAC, MAC, C-USA, Sun Belt will be evaluated, not the current six and Notre Dame.

the 2010-2013 evalaution simply says "conferences" which could imply all FBS conferences. But the only reference to a number I see is "The champions of no more than seven conferences will have annual automatic berths."

So based I what I see/read, I'm sticking with what I said: "They would simply a 7th conference instead of dropping a conference. The BCS evaluation period is only to see if another conference is "BCS" worthy. It does not examine to see if any of the current members are still BCS worthy."

You are correct for years before 2014. No conference will be dropped prior to 2014 but/and a conference may be added if they meet the criteria (not to exceed 7 conferences). After 2014 the website implies that all conferences will be considered for AQ. If only 5 meet the criteria then only 5 will be AQ and someone will have to be dropped.

I can see that. But I still don't see where the five is coming from. Maybe I'm just missing the "5" or "five" when I'm reading.

Not sure what you mean exactly. It was arbitrary for me, it could be 3 or 4...it makes not difference. After 2014 all conferences that meet AQ criteria will be AQ (not to exceed 7 conferences). If the eastern half of the U.S. falls into the ocean and all we had left was the PAC-10, MWC, WAC, and Big 12 and only the PAC-10 and Big 12 meet AQ criteria then there would only be 2 AQ conferences in 2014.

In other words, it doesn't seem to me that 5 AQ conferences is a floor after 2014 necessarily. 7 is definitely a ceiling though.
S
SpiffCoug
I can go with that. No floor per se, but a definite ceiling of 7. Although, I highly doubt a current AQ conference would be allowed to become non-AQ>

This is correct, and a good catch. Only additions will be considered in 2012. Starting in 2014, both additions and subractions are possible. This is because the 6 BCS conferences already requalified until 2014 based on the last 4 years of numbers crunching though, not because of a free ride.

Definitely. Especially since the AQ conference commissioners probably write the AQ criteria.

I don’t understand what these MWC commisioners are thinking. Boise State is the only “very” attractive team that is part of the dicussions. Forget Nevada AND Fresno State. Add Houstan and Tulsa!!!

Benefits: 1) Potentially 5 teams ranked in the top 25 preseason polls next year

2) Tulsa has consistantly performed better than UN- Reno and Fresno

3) Citizens in the dust belt live for football which would increas MWC viewership immensly.

4) A Houstan TCU game would create a natural rivalry, a game that could eventually approached the popularity of the Texas, Texas A&M rivalry game(eventually) in that state.

5)When the conference gets split… at some point, both divisions could have three teams that could potential to be in the top 25 in the nation. IMAGINE; 6 TEAMS IN THE TOP 25! GO MWC!!!

Another point of interest: The San Diego Chrgers are having a difficult time negotiating a deal for a new football stadium in San Diego. There have been threats that the ownership could be inclined to relocate the Chargers. If that happened, SDSU football's marketshare would increase incredibly. Being out of the Shadow of the Chargers (they play in the same stadium), SDSU following would increase dramatically. Being the ONLY football eam in San Diego would dramatically increase ther following and the program's revene. SDSU sould potentially be knocking on the door of TCU, BYU, UTAH, BSU,and hopefully Houstan is this would happen... taking them out of the "trenches" of the conference.

Nevada has, what, 7 basketball conference championships in a row now?

Fresno State has football attendance of 40,000+ and a Top 25 finish this decade.

Houston and Tulsa have a combined 0 Top 25 football finishes this decade. They have less than 20,000 fans in the seats. Houston's mascot is the Cougars, and they are both in the Central timezone (one of them is in Oklahoma!).

Houston is 10-2 with 2 games left to play. Let's see how they do next year without Keenum. Judging by their defense, probably not so well.

Nevada is 8-4 and has the #1 rushing team in the nation with 3 players who have over 1000 yards.

Fresno State is 7-4 and has one of the top rushers in the nation this year in Matthews.

Tulsa is 5-7 and isn't even bowl eligible!

Well, let's also look at how well Nevada does after their QB leaves, my guess is none-too-well either. What it boils down to is this: if we expand to twelve teams, we're going to have to take two teams that are mediocre. IF we do that, we need to look at who makes the most sense as far as money is concerned. Who brings us the best recruiting, TV market, etc.

The Cougs have set themselves up nicely for a top ten finish (esp if we beat big name team like USC). Throw in TCU's inevitable win in a BCS bowl after they get snubbed for a shot at the NC, and the MWC sets itself up pretty nicely for an autobid by only adding BSU, which I think would be ideal.

I'm shocked, but pleased (for MWC's sake), that :utard: is still in the top 25 (at #25).

- TCU will win their bowl game

- Utah will probably play an inferior opponent and win

- BYU will hopefully win (this one is the biggest question mark b/c we are so inconsistent, and will have a very tough Pac-10 opponent)

But given the scenario they all win... we'd be looking at:

- A top 3 ranked TCU team

- A top 10 BYU team

- A ranked Utah team

Now THAT would look good.

It's also irrelevant to the BCS. Post-bowl rankings don't count to them.
