Only Notre Dame, with its reach and brand awareness, can enjoy a home-field advantage more than 3,600 miles from its campus. Who else could make the kinds of overseas waves that the Irish are this week in Dublin? Maybe BYU in South America or the Philippines.

WASHINGTON STATE-BRIGHAM YOUNG: Mitt Romney will make his nomination acceptance speech at or near the time when America's Mormon college football team will open its season. The NFL moved its season opener to Wednesday, Sept. 5 so that Barack Obama's nomination acceptance speech could air without competition from professional football on Thursday, Sept. 6. Why couldn't college football have moved this game and South Carolina-Vanderbilt to Wednesday, Aug. 29, in order to avoid conflicting with Romney's speech? The NFL "gets it" on scheduling. College football doesn't. An added note: This game is slated for a 10:15 p.m. Eastern time start. South Carolina-Vanderbilt is set for a 7 p.m. Eastern kickoff. Does anyone seriously think Gamecocks-Commodores will end before 10:15 Eastern? If it's not a service-academy game or a downmarket Big Ten game with poor passing teams, it's not ending in under three hours and 15 minutes. Sigh.

Oh crap, that's a good point about the SC/Vandy game going long. Look for a later than 8:15 kickoff at LES then and the game to end well after midnight.
