I reported this last week when I said he was hurt and broke 3 vertebra. I guess no one was listening.

I was listening and commented on it.

If that's true, Riley shouldn't be allowed to put his little toe on the field and that was gross negligence on the coaching staff to play him against Utah and BSU. I find it hard to believe a scan on his back wasn't done after the Weber game.

If a scan wasn't done after the Weber game, then BYU needs to re-examine it's medical procedures. Every injury should be getting a scan. There should be no relying on the player to inform the coach how medically sound they are.

FAIL on Bronco's part - whether he scanned Riley's back and let him play anyways or didn't bother to scan it. BYU is lucky Riley didn't end up in a wheelchair.

Gunther also reports that Ziggy wouldn't be playing on any other D-1 team, that multiple other BYU players couldn't make a D-1 team, and that BYU has no chance against USU this Friday. (I listen to Gunther every day and actually like him, think he's funny, and that he tries to give BYU props but he's still a Ute through and through. He's really the only afternoon option in the market.)

email from someone very close to the Nelson family states that he has 3 cracked vertebrae in his lower back suffered in the Weber State Game.......wouldn't be surprised to see that type of injury end his career.

Were these immediate family members (parents/siblings), close family members (cousins/aunts/uncles), or general members of Aggie Nation?

In all seriousness, if true it's sad for Reilly and disappointing on the part of the coaches.

I don't know if the true story will ever come out. But the coaches new Riley was injured in the Weber St. game and didn't play him for the full 2nd half. Can't imagine how they would fail to get him scanned. It would be highly unlikely to miss seeing cracked vertebrae from xrays/mri scans.

This. I've been stewing this over the last few weeks and the coaches' apologist in me just comes up blank with explanations. Only thing I can think of is that either Riley just told them it was a muscle contusion (bruise) in the back and the med staff believed him (though given his past history of hushing his medical condition, I don't know why they'd believe him), or the med staff did the right thing, took some film, and determined that the injury itself was not threatening his mobility or risked damage to the spinal column, and so could be managed medically, so long as Riley could stand the pain.

I suspect that it's something of the latter, and not being a medical doctor I can't comment on how cracking vertebrae may or may not compromise risk of paralysis. But from a lay perspective, this seems absolutely NUTS!

IF he just had an XR or an MRI (to examine for a muscle injury) this could have been missed on a first scan. Maybe they only caught it on CT or a second XR. A small vertebral fracture can be very difficult to diagnose.

I hope the best for RN, but he just wasn't that good. Maybe it was the injuries that pushed him over the top in his poor performance this year but, but it was the mental errors that always bothered me more than any physical shortcomings. He never recognized his limitations and lost games for that reason alone more than anything else.

If he's out, Riley can truly Say he gave his all. Good for him. Unfortunately he gave too much and it cost byu two games.

Bronco loved Riley too much.

Riley loved Riley too much.

Bronco indulged Riley too much.

Riley was happy to beg, indulged and be indulgent.

Both have fortunately come to their Senses--although I will believe it when I hear it officially announced.

I hope Riley dresses the rest of the year, goes out to play role of captain, as he did Friday, and continues to build and cheer and coach Taysom, who seems to have a very good relationship wit Riley; and from whom could learn much.

Gunther, while more cool than most Yewtes, is a bitter punk who gave his all in college and couldnt make a go at it the NFL.

Ansah would destroy Gunther, even in his prime. Ansah may or may not have had a chance to walk on a football team at other universities...

Ansah will not only be drafted but make Gnther eat his fricken Yewt chicken feathers. :munch:

Is Riley's dad an orthopedic surgeon or something similar? I know Riley wants to be a doctor and Gary Anderson's been joking this week that he has a good relationship with "Doc Nelson" and that he repaired Anderson's kids knee.

If this rumor is true it seems even stranger if his dad has that kind of background.

Whomever is leaking the injury needs to be careful. Patient diagnoses are protect by HIPAA. They could face legal troubles.

Deep throat didn't give all the answers to the reporters questions, now go be a good reporter and do your job and confirm......

I'm not sure exactly how bad the injury is, but it's bad enough that he is out for the year. Players have told me they don't expect him to play the rest of the year (that's my source). I don't see Riley playing the rest of the year, should not matter anyways since Taysom is better. The players want him to play regardless.

"...him..." who? Riley or TH?

Cracked vertebrae aren't going to heal with a week or two's rest. If that is what he has he should sit to avoid any permanent injury. Too bad to see. The parallels between Utah and BYU's QB situations is pretty interesting.

Coaches and players are public ally saying the rumors are bunk.

If we are going to have a rumor, can we at least have a juicy one like Riley is a Fundamentalist Mormon, married to six women, and he's just tired these days.... :bug:

I am embarrassed to associate myself with this thread. Unbelievable.

Bronco reported that Riley is still pretty beat up (although he didn't play last week), and TH is getting all of the reps. Very similar situation to last week - game day decision, will be based upon how they evaluate Riley's capabilities. Seems like an advantage for BYU to ensure that the opponents have to plan for 2 QBs of different speed and arm strength. USU will be a very stout test as they are ranked 11th on total D.

So why did you? couldn't resist?

Neither could I.

Why?

Because we keep getting cryptic messages from coaches embedded in their best efforts to present a united, clear front: "hurt bad", " tougher than all of us", "don't really know Taysom very well", "looking back, psychologically, i ceased to be me" (Nelson), "that's the tough part about it, is feeling that an injury beat you", etc, etc, etc.

"Beat you"???? Did RN mean, an injury beat him as in past tense, as in he's done? Beat Riley at Utah and Bsu??? Oh, oh, oh, and beat the team as well? What??? If there went self absorbed history here, as well as a bunch of holes in this story, it would be easier to accept reports from coaches and players that he's only DAYS away from playing?
