Most Disappointing Season

In my 23 years of being a BYU fan, this now goes down as the most disappointing season. Given the inexcusable losses to Utah and BSU, and what could have been against OSU and ND, I am more disappointed with this season than any other in the past 23 years.

Sigh.

I think I'd have to go with 2003.

I get that but I am basing it on what expectations were and what could/should have been.

2003 was a disaster but no one was expecting great things.

I was at LES when the Cougs lost to UNLV... that speaks volumes

So far, this year is meeting expectations, or just below them. I certainly didn't expect to be so bad in 2003. It was the worst year of football of my life.

2004 is right up there for me. That loss at home to Wyoming where we had every chance to win and kept turning the ball over. Losing to a dominate home team in BSU by missing a field goal. GARY CROWTON!!! It was supposed to be the year Crowtons recruits made some hay. How about the Utah game that year, embarassment galore...

Yeah, 2004 was about the same as 2003, maybe even a little worse.

Sitting through that Utah game was one of the most miserable experiences of my life.

+1 I'd put 02, 03 and 04 all ahead of this one. 05 and 10 were also frustrating since I had to sit through a humiliating loss to usu in 10 and a 4th straight loss to utah in 05. Yeah, this year isn't the most frustrating in the last 23 years by a long shot for me.

Given what could/should have been and that our HC said last night on the coaches show that he would do things the same if given the chance, it is the most disappointing for me on a lot of levels.

Maybe part of that is that I don't believe things will change with Bronco unless he changes. And I don't see that changing.

Really? what about a losing season in 02 after what BYU did on 01? I could go back to the 58-56 lost to usu in 93 for a disapointing year too, BYU was horrible that year due to injury on the defense. 95 sucked too 3 straight losses to utah that year and missed a bowl game, first time in a long time for edwards. Yeah we have had much more disapointing years than this one.

I guess a lot of it comes down to expectations. I did not expect to win at Utah and BSU like you apparently did. It hurts HOW we lost, but i feared our OLine and was pretty sure Riley would be better but at some point would get hurt. I did not think our D would be as good as it has been, although I thought we'd do pretty dang good. I thought we'd beat OSU and hoped for a win at GT. So I'm down a game. Thus, while bummed at the losses, no way is this the most disappointing season for me....

Yeah, that's true. Because in those years:

1. We had a top defense. One of the best, if not the best BYU has ever had, that was wasted by a disaster of an offense.

2. We had coaches choosing to play a QB for two games who was so injured that he couldn't throw 15 yards.

3. We lost to our rival and BSU on the road when we should have won because of bone-headed decisions by our coaching staff.

4. It took our coaching staff too long to realize that our O-Line was swiss cheese before they made any changes.

5. Our coaches inability to manage the clock and signals hurt our best QB, and who knows what long term affect this might have.

6. Our coaches have no ability to force our QB to either throw the ball away or sit. Sure nice to see the inmates running the asylum.

7. The most accurate pass all year was thrown by the backup QB last Saturday, who sat the bench all year because our HC has a weird man-crush.

8. It took an injury for the coaches to realize they had the best RB on the bench.

9. We had our HC saying he woulnd't change anything.

Sure glad those things happen those other years and we didn't have to worry about it this year.

I didn't expect us to win those games either. I said before the season that we would lose and this season would suck because of it.

What I didn't expect is that Utah and BSU would be both be so beatable this year. And that our coaching staff would squander away those wins. Should have been easy wins.

I didn't expect this season to be what it was because of how we blew it.

I keep telling myself to lower my expectations for BYU. I didn't expect to have to lower them this much.

Unfortunately, as long as Bronco continues to do the same things every year, we will continue to have the same outcome. I expect my frustration level to continue to rise until I don't have the ability to care anymore.

There are many, many more out there who feel as I do.

There are many, many fans who feel lots of different things. So what exactly does that mean?

I can assure you that lots of fans, in fact, all of them, would have wanted more wins this year. It's not exactly a super-secret club.

In 93 we lost to our rival and usu. We had an awesome offense that was wasted by a horrible defense.

With the overall talent we have on this team, 4 losses is not acceptable. We had hte components for a special year, and some bad decisions were made--then repeated--which cause it to not happen.

If we were 7-2 right now, we are top-17 easily. The two early losses to Utah and BSU, both teams we should have beaten, hurt. If 1-loss, outside shot at BCS this year. And those were realistic hopes. But 4 losses later and it really is a worst case scenario season almost. Almost.

And that is underwhelming.

Look, it took injuries to Dulan and Manu for Bronco to "see" the potential with Ziggy. It took 7 quarters too long for him to "see" that Riley was not the answer. It took 2 seasons for Bronco to "see" that KVN was special, not getting all reps until this year. in spite of hte fact he is hte best athlete on the D. It took Bronco far too long to "see" that Tree can not defend the pass in space, and still struggles to se that at times this year (I love Tree on run defense. Love him). It took Bronco far too long to see issues with his Oline, Issues with run blocking. Shall I go on?

Face it, Bronco takes too damn long too see the issues with his own team at times, and that is why we typically start 1-2 most years. Or 2-2. And that is not good enough.

I feel a little bit bad for the folks that consider this the most disappointing season of the last 23 years, I understand thinking that this would be a special team. I did. I expected an undefeated season. I lost a bet with a friend for lunch that the Cougars would lose 1 game tops this year, and he pegged us at 4 losses. And, you know what, I'm still enjoying this season.

If you truly consider this the most disappointing season in the last 23 years, I've got to believe that you will never never find true happiness, and you should probably go home an d cry about it.

If four (or, three) close losses to various degrees of tough opponents, make you consider that this year is the most disappointing in a quarter of a century, (a time span that saw statutory rape allegations, and other serious off field issues combine with inexplicable on field losses) then you really should take up a new hobby, if you stick with tying your happiness to BYU football, you're gonna be stuck with disappointment your whole life. Years like this happen, everywhere! And if you tag your happiness to what a semi random group of 17 to 24 year old guys do on weekends, you're gonna have a ton of heartache! I'd frankly be more disappointed in my season if I were a USC fan or an Ohio State fan this year (obviously for different reasons.) Also, how do you think Utah fans feel? Their best win this year is over a team that they like to call a "mid-major" and that win only came after the so-called mid major fell apart! And they, the Utes may not even become bowl eligible (and be stuck with a sucky hoops team to look forward to)!

I guess what I think is, that if this season is the most disappointing for you in 23 years, you should consider taking up drinking... it sounds like you need it!

Based upon my level of investment, both personally and financially, and the results of the year, I;d say yes. Not because it was not an ok season, but because of the absolute blown opportunity for a special season.

When Utah had their chances, they took them, same for TCU, same for BSU. Once agains (similar to 2006), we did not.

BYU has had worse seasons for sure. But this one ranks right up there in terms of disappointment for sure. Still waiting for our special year with Bronco. Very disappointing for sure.

I was there too. I was serving on an Advisory Board for the Marriott School of Business and we went as a group. BYU was favored, but lost at home. Sorry, Northern, but losing to tams the while world expects you to beat is way more disappointing than losing to teams favored to beat you or that are expected to be very even match-ups.

That 1985 season, defending national champions - ranked 7th when UTEP, in their only win of the season took them down was beyond disappointing. Embarrassing. 2010 was more disappointing to me than this year. Way more. In fact, last year, due to the beat down and almost losing to USU at home after losing to them in 2010 was disappointing - embarrassing.

This season I expected 4 losses if Riley miraculously stayed healthy. If he was injured, I expected 6-6 because I knew we had no back-up that was ready, we had kicking issues, a rebuilding OL, unproven tight ends and pedestrian RBs, and no real fullback and were playing a schedule that would make us pay. And, yes, I knew we would have a very good defense. I even predicted that OSU could be a trap game based on what I saw last year. This team met or exceeded my expectations - which were exactly what the expectations national polls and experts had for BYU.
