Carlino was the difference between an embarrasing loss and the win we got.

Word. But I can't decide if we were just playing poorly or if we were playing poorly because of the U's defense. Utah is much much better than they were last year, and anything goes in a rivalry game. Crisco definitely had this game circled on the calendar and his players were going all out with the physicality, but even so, I couldn't believe how cold we were shooting. Overall we shot 31% but that number drops to 25% (!) when you take out Carlino's numbers. In that light Haws' shooting 20% (!!) doesn't look that bad.
Crazy game. Glad it's over. Glad we got the W, we didn't deserve it tonight.

Haws struggles were a direct result of utah's defense. They designed a defense specifically to take him out of the game and it worked. Everyone else doesn't have an excuse. Zylstra missed all his shots and all of them were wide open. Other shooters missed wide open shots. BYU needed to hit thier wide open shots and Carlino was the only one who did.

Dave Rose was outcoached tonight. He was lucky to come away with a win.

Very true. And, as is the case many times with Rose, he was a bit slow making adjustments.
Rose needs to tweak his starting lineup again. Should be:
1 - Carlino
2 - Winder
3 - Haws
4 - Sharp
5 - Davies
Our current lineup is only two dimensional. Stick a man tight on Haws and double up on Davies and you've got BYU.
Cusick is not a threat whatsoever and will never "go off." Zylstra is as streaky as they come and gets abused on defense. Sharp is hustle rebound guy; again, not someone that's going to "go off" on you for 15 points.
Carlino has the potential. You have to worry about Carlino if you're the opposing coach. The offense also moves much, much better with Carlino. We're not a half-court set team. This team is not built to play half-court ball and Cusick is a half court, walk the ball up the court and pass it off at the three-point line conservative PG. Only shot we have to go anywhere this season is to run, run and run some more.
Winder brings defense and speed to the court. Great chemistry between Carlino and Winder too. We get stops with Winder in. Let 'em run, Rose. Let 'em run.

Ross was not our coached in this game - maybe first half but not second half. They went to a zone second half and had Winder on the wing which took away the dribble drive penetration and kick out for 3. Also had Haws driving to the basket more than spot up shooting which resulted in him going to the line more often once they got to shoot 1-1 with 13 minutes to play.
Sad thing is we are still exposed to poor adjustment on the wing without Winder. Our 3-point shooting sucks and we should not setttle for this but go for higher percentage 10-15 foot shots. Step out for 3's when we are feeling it. Davies, Sharp, Zylstra, Haws got knocked out of their game with physical play of Utes. They were frustrated and intimidated in first half. Utes used same approach that ISU did. Second half they responded with intensity, and came out with trapping - aggressive D, out rebounded Yewts, and had 10 steals for the game. If we put together 4 quarters of this type of intensity we will do well. Good D, tough stops, rebounding feed our transition game as does working the ball inside out. We will get killed if we continue to shoot 3's when we are off and then don't play aggressive D. We can thank the Utes for showing us how to win challenging games yet play ugly.

The time sitting on the bench has done wonders for Carlino's game and attitude. I hope he continues to improve and become the guard he thought he would be.
