Davies and Haws are pretty good. The rest not so much

From Greg Wrubell's tweet:

It takes two: last night v. NAU, BYU's Davies/Haws shot 69% FG, 60% 3PFG, 100% FT, 42 pts. Rest of team: 33% FG, 25% 3PFG, 56% FT, 42 pts.

Davies and Haws are pretty good, but it has been shown that they can be take out of a game by very good defenders. The rest of the team is not very good, even against the worst of the worst.

True. Keep in mind the bottom of the bench played 15 min of the game. In the last 8 min or so it was Calvert, Winder, Delgado, Harward, and Ambrosino on the court.

I agree, Davies and Haws carry the load. We need at least one other player averaging 12+ points a game.

It looked like when Davies and Haws were out last night, the rest of the team played NAU even. This wasn't very encouraging.

6 points on 1-for-13 shooting over the final 10 minutes. NAU is awful, and they were long past beaten. This does not bode well

Completely agree but look at the D1 experience level of that group. Only Winder has played any serious minutes of D1 ball.

Calvert = freshman

Delgado = JUCO transfer

Ambrosino = JUCO transfer

Harward = freshman

Not only that, but each of those players are used to playing with Davies, Haws, Carlino or Zylstra also on the court. I agree, it didn't look good. It looked horrible. But before predicting the demise of the team look at what was on the court.

There was no offensive identity. All of BYU's identity was on the bench. You have a group of bench players all trying to impress the coach rather than try to win the game. As you mentioned, the game was completely out of reach for NAU; so, if you're a bench player what's your main focus at that point? Impress the coach. Sadly, they each seemed to think the best way to impress Rose was to abandon team ball.

Delgado and Ambrosino were shooting quite well until those final 8 min when all the scrubs were on the court. It was tempered chaos on the court.

The only sport where you can get away with having only 2 good players is volleyball, 2 v 2 that is. This team just isn't very good, and our 2 best players really aren't anything that special on a national level. It's just one of those seasons where it would be a miracle if we make it to the big dance.
