Wait, we allow theories on this site? Where's Spiff, the theory catcher when you need him?

;-)

Until Carlino can create sick crossovers and elevate like Jimmer, forget about it. And until he can consistently score above 20+ every game, the comparison is over. What matters, is he is trending the right direction. Glad he is here.

Although, If he improves his very preventable getting into trouble, he and Haws could really be a dynamic duo the next two years.

I'm still tyring to figure out who is trying to sabotage Carlino.

I thought it was Zylstra, the untalented upperclassmen.

Carlino is a good player. To win we need him to be a little better. He has the talent to do so. We don't have a really deep talented team. So if we need some one to step up besides Haws or Davies it has to be Carlino.

The key is that Jimmer made huge improvements in his Junior and Senior years.

I am getting in on this a little late...so please forgive me if my point has already been stated. I think Matt Carlino has the potential to be the best point guard in BYU history. He has the ability to do so many things well. He reminds me a lot of Jason Kidd.

That being said...he does need to work on his consistency. I view it this way:

If Carlino plays well below his potential, but Haws and Davies are stellar, BYU will be an NIT team

If Carlino plays to the peak of his potential, but one of Haws or Davies struggles, BYU will be an NCAA tournament team - low seed, one game.

If Carlino plays to the peak of his potential and Haws and Davies are stellar, BYU will win one or two games in the NCAA tournament.

While I love Haws and Davies, I really believe that Carlino is BYUs best chance at leveraging a competitive advantage.

I have to admit that the argument that Carlino is better than Jimmer is somewhat absurd.

Do you have the rebound, assist, and steals for everyone on the team besides Jimmer and Carlino for the respective periods?

It is kind of absurd for this reason...they are not attempting to do the same thing while playing the same position.

Jimmer is a once in a generation player. He basically dominated a game and destroyed teams by owning the ball. His scoring prowess is unheralded - even with double and triple teams.

Carlino is more of a prototypical point guard. He is not a once in a generation type of player. He does not possess the unusual scoring prowess. However, he is easily ten times the defender that Fredette was (and is). Also, Carlino has better ball handling skills, is a much better passer, and sees the floor better than Fredette does.

So, while no one can be compared to Fredette...I think the argument / discussion can be legitimately produced that Carlino may be a more complete player than Fredette and a better point guard. If he develops well, he could be a better professional player than Fredette.

This kind of reminds me of comparing John Beck to Ty Detmer. Both were really, really, good...one was just unusually good and a player for a generation.

Carlino. He is his own enemy sometimes.

But if you want to continue, i will go with you. No one is sabotaging Carlino, because Rose is in control of his team and not letting Carlino sabotage himself or the team through his penchant for out of control play. It took Doman and Bronco almost 2/3 of a season to put a stop to Riley's shenanigans.

I can fully agree with this.

All this talk of the team not being "good" and the continued debate about the PG position got me thinking about comparing Sophomore Jimmer and Sophomore Carlino. Hopefully this will add a bit of perspective to the conversation.

For fun, I included the players' freshman and sophomore years.

Jimmer

Freshman

Averaged 18.5 min/game and 7 pts/game. Grabbed 1 board a game. Dished 1.7 assists/game while committing 1.2 turnovers/game (1.2 ratio). Average 0.8 steals a game. Shot 40% from the field, 85% from the line and 33% from 3-point line.

Sophomore

Averaged 33 min/game and 16.2 pts/game. Grabbed 3 boards a game. Dished 4 assists/game while committing 2.6 turnovers/game (1.5 ratio). Average 1.5 steals a game. Shot 48% from the field, 85% from the line and 38% from 3-point line.

Carlino

Freshman

Averaged 27 min/game and 12.2 pts/game. Grabbed 3 board a game. Dished 4.6 assists/game while committing 3.0 turnovers/game (1.5 ratio). Average 1.4 steals a game. Shot 40% from the field, 76% from the line and 33% from 3-point line.

Sophomore

Averaging 26 min/game and 10 pts/game. Grabbing 3.5 board a game. Dishing 4.4 assists/game while committing 2.1 turnovers/game (2.1 ratio). Averaging 1.9 steals a game. Shooting 41% from the field, 66% from the line and 30% from 3-point line.

We really can't complain about Carlino's game. While Jimmer certainly is/was the better shooter, Carlino is handing out more assists with fewer turnovers than Jimmer did his Sophomore season. Carlino is also a better rebounder and clearly a better defender.

Points are a big part of winning games, and a sophomore Jimmer scored more points than a sophomore Carlino. Carlino does need to work on his shooting; we all know that. But, you have to keep in mind Carlino is averaging 7 min/game less than Jimmer did.

Carlino is scoring about 0.4 points/min, so 7 more minutes a game theoretically should result in 2.7 more points a game for Carlino, which would put him at 12.7 pts/game if Carlino got as many minutes as Jimmer did.

One big area of improvement for Carlino is in FT percentage. His shooting is down on the season (it's been improving), but FT shooting is drastically down. He doesn't get to the line as much as Jimmer did, but if Carlino shot 80% from the line he'd have another point or two to his average.

Carlino dug himself in a huge shooting hole, but he appears to be climbing out of it. In WCC play he's a Top 5 scorer. Add in all the assists, steals, boards, etc. and Carlino is a special player.

You could make the case that as a PG, Carlino is better than Jimmer.

And hey - if he made every shot he would get even more.

And if he was double-teamed and focused on rather than ignored to focus on Haws and Davies then ... oops

Bottom line is that Carlino the Soph is slightly down vs Carlino the freshman even though opponents are focusing on Haws and Davies.

He needs to get his personal curve slanted up instead of being flat to trending. Down slightly.

Jimmer didn't face any double teams his Sophomore year. Cummard did and Cummard being the smart player that he was passed the ball when doubled, often times to an open Jimmer.

Carlino's shooting and play is way up over the last 6 games. He's averaging over 17 pts a game and among the Top 5 in scoring in the WCC. Yes, the WCC isn't the MWC, but Carlino was just missing shots in the beginning of the season.

He is trending up, and if he continues on this trend his numbers by the season ought to be pretty respectable especially given he's playing 7 min less a game Jimmer did as a sophomore.

Is Carlino the "next Jimmer?" No. Will he be better than "Jimmer?" Probably depends on your definition of better.

Will Carlino be drafted?

Yes - after a terribly inconsistent start he is playing less inconsistently though careless play contributed significantly to our last loss. After the big lead, he got sloppy.

I'm guessing "No"... but I think that he's going to go down as a great player along the lines of a Jackson Emery, who didn't get drafted, but whom I was glad to see on the floor every night.

I hope he gets to Jackson Emery level of greatness too. But that's still a far cry from Jimmer greatness.

Who knows.

I think Carlino has got a shot and the athleticism to get drafted if he can live up to his talent.

Carlino needs to be a more consistent shooter. If he can get to averaging around 18 or so a night and 6+ assists, I think he's got a shot.

Jimmer was a scoring machine in college. All of Jimmer's shortcomings were overshadowed by his scoring. Who cares if he turned the ball over almost as many times as he had assists, he'd make it up with points on the board. Who cares if Jimmer let his man go past him time and time again, he'd make up for giving up an easy 2 by sinking a 3.

He has the potential to exceed Jackson. More like a Lee Cummard relative to productivity. Next year, if he can continue to improve playing under control, will be a great duo with Haws. Next year, those two will be the primary scorers and BYU will be searching for the third scorer.
