I just remember in 2011 the fall practice reports saying that Heaps looked as good as Beck did in 2006. Then when the defense was live, he was one of the worst QB's in BYU history. I will believe the hype when it translates onto the field.

I don't think many, if any, BYU fans are ready to conclude much based on a Spring Game with no QB contact allowed. The jury clearly is still out re how Heaps will react to a Big 12 pass rush. And surely those teams will look at a little BYU film of Jake and send the pressure until he proves he can make them pay when they send it.

He did seem to have learned to practice and hang with teammates outside of regular team practice time instead of with personal trainers. He does still make self important remarks in interviews like "I am just glad to be out there for the guys".

But it is easy to predict that KU will be twice as good next year. They only beat 1 team last year and it was a lower division team in week 1. KU had a solid recruiting class and guts that transferred in the prior year but had to sit out can go now.

So yeah KU should be good for at least 2 wins. Maybe even more. But a winning season still looks to be beyond their reach.

Are you sure? Have you seen their schedule? They could easily repeat last year's record.

They open against South Dakota State - probably a win.

But then their five road games (Rice, TCU, Texas, Oklahoma St, and Iowa St) all went to bowls. They could lose all five of those games.

The other six games are home to Louisiana Tech, Texas TEch, Oklahoma, Baylor, West Virginia and Kansas St. All bowl teams as well.

Doubling their wins from last year would be a pretty significant accomplishment.

I totally agree that schedule matters. BYU has been experiencing that. I do believe KU will be better. Worst case - play the QB that finished the season. They came very close to winning a couple of times with him at QB. They had a good recruiting class. Higher rated than ours. I think that will get them up to 2 total wins given that 1 should be a gimme.

3 would not shock me. But The Bibster is not ready to predict 3 wins.

See my imbedded response. IDK how to move it to the right spot.

Has anyone read the Grisham (I think it was his) novel, Playing for Pizza? Heaps reminds me of the QB in that book. Lots of talent, but didn't pan out in the NFL because he couldn't maintain his composure in the pocket, so he ended up playing in an Italian football league. I wont Spoil the book for you, but Heaps is a perfect fit for that character. I'm interested to see how Heaps handles this adversity and see if he really has taken his shortcomings to heart and worked to overcome them. I have nothing against the kid, but I doubt he succeeds unless he has done an honest inventory of why he failed at BYU and turns that around.

There are a few of us left that are old enough to remember when The Brick Oven was called Heaps O Pizza. So when Jake Heaps came along - I tried to dub him Pizza. Even thought of buying The Brick Oven and changing the name back to capitalize on the legend about to unfold.

So yeah - Italian League - playing for PIZZA.

And would that be an "honest" inventory based on fans myopic view?

And would his "honest inventory" need to include a confessional letter to the BYU fans as to why he "failed" them?
S

No, it would be an honest inventory based on Heaps' own myopic view. He's the one who flamed out at BYU. He would be wise to figure out what went wrong and try to identify the things HE did wrong, the things HE can control and make the changes HE can make so HE doesn't find HIMSELF in the same situation.

By all accounts so far, it appears HE has done that. We haven't heard of HIM doing anything other than working HIS butt of with his team. No talk of national championships and lofty, post-college aspirations. Just going about his business professionally, with HIS team.

Lawboy
Well, apparently Doman flamed at BYU too, as did RN. Difference between them and Heaps is that Jake has 2 years to make good, and Doman and RN are now done with CFB(Doman could surface somewhere later).

I think Jake will be improved. Weiss is a solid QB coach. Look what he did with Brady Quinn at ND. I'm not saying that KU will be awesome, just that Jake is going to be better. And by his senior year, I think he will finally have it, in the same way Beck progressed to get there. Just takes some guys longer than others.

Unfortunately, I don't think the talent level and schedule will allow us to really see if/how Jake has improved. He's on a sucky team.

Are you making excuses for Heaps? why start now? Your views have been so myopically lopsided, relative to Heaps, as with most on this site, that suggesting Weiss is as bad as Doman for Heaps' career, is, well, not surprising.

Lawboy is spot on. And he should know. Because as all good attorneys and legitimate, critical thinkers know, there are four sides to every story: His version, her (the second person's/entity's) version, the truth, and what can be proven in a court of law. He also knows that it takes TWO to tango. Isolating Heaps faults as a one-sided causation to his struggles at BYU is so consistently linear (A causes B) and myopic, and held by far too many on this site, is, again, typical. But what can i expect? the masses will have their scape-goat. and they will hang all their sins and frustrations on that scapegoat ad infinitum. Well, gone also are Doman--FIRED, and RIley in near ignominy, if not irrelevancy.

Since you're so good at critical thinking and so eloquent, I would love to hear you defend the case of Doman or Riley based on having had to deal with Jake Heaps. It's only fair, if you can blame part of Heaps' failures on those two then certainly part of their failures can also be pinned of Jake Heaps.

My opinions on Heaps are very clear. He was an awesome practice player that played terrible under live fire. He chose to leave BYU at the first signs of adversity instead of showing fight in that adversity. He is now playing at a terrible football school for a horrible coach. He is not going to succeed, he may not be the starter at the end of this year and like other quitters who transfer at the first sign of adversity, he will not make the NFL. I have not hidden this opinion and it hasn't changed. The fact that I pointed out that Weiss will not improve his chances for the NFL is irrelevant to that opinion.

Keep going. You are just beginning to enter the realm of circular causality. But be careful, the facts you don't want to hear and know in your simple "A causes B world" are within the deeper, devilish details and context of asking for the truth most don't want to handle.

And yes, Riley suffered so much from Jake, didn't he. He was denied his rightful starting legacy, his chance to take the BYU QB torch because he was outperformed in practice over and over again by a snot nosed freshman. And wow, did you see Jakes influence on Riley when he entered the bowl game a few months ago? It was like the ghost of Jake Heaps just jumped right in front of Riley and he couldn't see that defender between he and the receiver. And Doman, well, he didn't ride Riley right into retirement, did he?

But keep going. If you want a truly honest and open discussion about the sins of both sides and not just the arrogant, wussy, quitter, keep going, bc I really don't think you care to know. Besides, it's not like there is anything new to be revealed, you just rejected or choose to forget "The rest of the (jake Heaps) story." ;-)

Yes, the first signs of adversity. This kid had been handed the starting job on a silver platter due to injury. He hadn't outperformed Riley in practice in the spring or fall of 2010. He played terribly from day on in games. He threw the ball all over the place and rarely actually hit his receivers in the hands. He was finally replaced by someone who didn't have a fraction of his natural talent but had the ability to lead a team to victory (while healthy) and transferred that very minute. He checked out the second he was benched and only because of injury did he refocus and played passably well in order to get us a couple of victories. Heaps was given every opportunity to succeed at BYU and gave BYU and its fans the finger the second he was confronted with adversity. You keep saying that Riley was the one who was handed the starting job without working. That is revisionist history and you know it.

Enter at your own risk.

It does have Heaps in the title thread. And with all the rewriting of history that goes on with the likes of Fdbtr, its a battle to be sure. The loads of crap are squeezing out is quite astounding, such as--

Heaps not outperforming Riley in practice? Check the stats friedbrains. He was outperforming Riley in spring ball instead of going to his Sr prom. Yes, he struggle in games behind a suck Oline and an unmotivated offense that had derision at every level of the offense including the coaches.

Silver platter my ars. There wasn't squat for talent in the wings. RN was the biggest poser of a true qb since I don't know who. Anae was in charge, he wanted to throw the ball down field, not watch an undersized running back with grit throw up the garbage passes he was throwing or watch the tuck, duck and run.

Aside from the fact that you know nothing or choose to recall nothing regarding what was going on in his personal/family life, your logic is a total no show.

If, as you state, he had so much "natural talent" then why waste it playing for an option OC? He knew there was not a fit. He knew there would not be a fit. He knew there was no Oline. He knew that Doman favored a running qb. And he knew a far superior running qb, an actual qb , not a running back posing as a qb, was coming to Provo who would be highly favored for his ability to escape from a crap Oline.....he knew there was n future at BYU.

The fact that you accuse him of "giving the finger" to BYU, when even the Heaps haters on CC acknowledge that he left with class, is clear indication of your bias, hated, offendedness or your idiocy and totally discredits anything you say.

Show me one quote over three years where I said Riley was handed the starting job. trollbtr.

Doman favored QB's who converted on 3rd down and threw TD's instead of interceptions. That is why Heaps got benched in favor of Nelson. Go back and look at what BYU was rated in 3rd down conversions before and after Heaps was benched and you will see the reason why he was benched. I am not the one rewriting history, if Heaps had "outperformed" Riley in spring and fall of 2010, he would have won the starting job outright instead of having to have shared it. As far as giving the finger to BYU, we just had a big long thread where Heaps admitted to deciding to transfer 5 minutes after being benched against Utah state. And you keep criticizing those of us who call him a quitter. Heaps had all the natural talent in the world, physically, and he got beat out by a guy who was recruited by no one because he was out worked by him. Nelson will forever go down in history as the villain because the golden boy transferred like a little wuss after having been beat out by him. People with so little intestinal fortitude will not make it to the NFL. Heaps is going to struggle at KU, just watch and see. As far as Riley being handed the job on a silver platter, he didn't need that, he took it through hard work and dedication to the team. Instead of working with personal trainers like a primadonna, he worked with the team like a leader. That is why the offense was unmotivated with Heaps, he had no connection to his teammates and so they had no loyalty to him when he sucked.
