I don't get over here too often anymore, but after a brief exchange with Spiffcoug outside this board, I decided to drop a quick line.

1. Disappointed about JJ. I actually had no problem with him returning kicks. It was a freak accident; both freak and non-freak accidents are a part of football. He cannot be replaced, but I trust Bronco will adequately compensate for the loss.

2. I like the new coaching staff. Personally, I question whether Anae has the top-end "stuff" to make a great OC, but I'm open-minded. It sounds as if there's much less strife among the players and, importantly, among the coaching staff. That can only help.

3. Speaking of the coaching staff: It's nice to hear that no one is threatening to stab another coach with a fork. I hope it lasts.

I look forward to this fall.

Welcome back to the site, mcgregor. I hope you visit and share your insights with us more often throughout the season.

This is certainly shaping up to be a year unique in BYU football history. Never before have we faced such an intriguing schedule with so many question marks combined with so much hope in the future.

I question whether we will be able to execute what Anae is trying to do offensively. Good news is the team trusts the coaches and have bought in 100 percent. there is certainly max effort being put out by the players and coaches. Really good vibes right now. As both of you said we will see what happens when or if things get bad though. If the offense is a mess it may get ugly.

Optimistic but not sold.

Mcgregor, What do you think of the new starts? Will the center of our D be good this year?

That wasn't literal; I don't know of any actual fork threats.

That being said, there were fights among the staff, particularly offensive coaches v defensive coaches. Lots of verbal altercations, and in front of other coaches. One particular coach screamed at Bronco. As you can imagine, he's no longer on the staff.

From what I understand, both sides had good points. There was an overall disdain for the offensive staff, who were perceived as not holding up their end, and overall frustration with Bronco failing to step in re the Riley/Play-calling issues.

I haven't lived in Provo for years, so I do not get to see practices. I have a hard time believing that we will be as productive this year as we were last. My guess is that we might give up a few more points in a game, but dropping from the 3rd best defense to the 25th is still a good system so long as the offense puts up points.

The only feedback I've really heard about this defense are from those who are optimistic year in, year out.
