Texas, the Most Talented Team In History

Texas has had many great recruiting classes, yes. But they have not been a very good team for a while now. Some stats:

Texas 2012 Nationally:

OFFENSE- #41 Passing, #53 Rushing.

DEFENSE- #36 Passing, #88 Rushing, #67 Total, #73 Scoring.

8 of 10 I-A teams on BYU's schedule this year had a better run defense than Texas did last year. All but Houston and Nevada (circle those games boys!).

In fact, Virginia, Utah State, Boise State, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame ALL had a better Pass Defense, a better Rush Defense, a better Total Defense, and a better Scoring Defense in 2012 than Texas did.

Utah State also had a better Passing Offense and a better Rushing Offense.

Facts.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. I might quibble with the title. They might be the most talented players, but I wonder about team. At least the D did not seem to be playing as a team? And maybe that is the problem.

Last years stats mean nothing. Just like comparing Taysom to Riley Nelson is stupid. This was a good Texas team. Why are we trying to talk down the win. Of course it will mean nothing if BYU loses to utah in a couple weeks but right now we should enjoy a very good win.

Why does last years stats mean nothing? They nearly returned everyone from last year. On what basis is Texas considered a great team right now? Is it because they beat New Mexico State? If that's the logic the Virginia is a great team and Oregon is out of this world.

Last year was last year, things change. His examples of the other teams having better defenses than Texas was true last year but may not be this year. Bronco likes to say that no one knows how good anyone is this time of year and he is right. It is true that Texas could end up being a bad team but so can everyone else we play, or it may turn out that Texas is really good but so is BYU, you just never know. My point is; why is everyone trying to take away from the win? A bunch of you are doing Airwolf84"s(wolfie) work for him.

Personally, I rank this Texas win as Bronco's best, just ahead of the Oklahoma win (luckily I was there in attendance for both games). I'm just trying to set a rational tone. I have seen multiple people state that "Texas was the most talented team on BYU's schedule, therefore BYU should win out." That is simply not true in the sense of team talent. Almost every team BYU plays this year has a better run defense than Texas does. The one thing they don't have is an equally large "name brand". I just don't want our fans to be fooled, or lulled into too deep a sense of false security. Games like Utah State will still be major dog-fights this season.

Texas I see going 8-4 this season. BYU, 9-4 after a bowl win. Mack Brown would be fired for that, but Bronco Mendenhall should be praised. Expectations is the main difference. I want to help temper ours so we can appreciate the ups without imploding during the downs. That's all.

Texas does have more physical talent then anyone else on our schedule. No one has as many top rated recruiting classes as them. They aren't as well coached as others on our schedule and that makes a difference. But to take away from the win by saying that Texas was over rated is bush league. I have been saying it every year that utah is our toughest game every year. Utah state is a close second now with their upgrade in coaching. I would put Wisconsin as a very difficult game. Notre Dame isn't as good as they were last year and this team can beat them, even on the road. It is a bad idea to start talking about having only 2 teams on the sched who have worse defenses than Texas.

Last year's stats mean a lot, at least until this year is at least half played. Last year Texas gave up more yards defensively than any other year in the program's history. The most yards rushing they gave up in any game was over 300 against Oklahoma (OU scored in the 60s and won by about 50 points). So I don't think we can logically assume that BYU merely dominated an incredibly strong defensive unit.

I understand where you are coming from. But last year is all we have to base it off of other than the last 2 games. This is why I hate preseason polls. It was a great win against a marquee and a very well know team on national TV that looks to be having another down year. And it's only going to get worse for them with a very difficult schedule this year. At the end of the year this win won't matter as much now other than its a W in the column. They will be unranked again.

Last year BYU's offense was ranked about where Texas' defense was ranked last year. Should we assume that BYU's offense sucks because it did last year?

No one has said that BYU dominated a dominating defense. They did dominate a team that physically has more 4 and 5 star players on it than any it will play for the rest of the year. That offense has more speed on it than any that we will play against for the rest of the year. The defense also has more speed on it than most we will play for the rest of the year. There was a reason Texas was #15 and it has to do with talent. A lot of people thought they should have been ranked in the top 10 but put them at 15 to let them prove themselves. We will see as the year goes on how big this win will really be. Oklahoma after we beat them in 09 had a bad year.

Biggest difference is the key position of QB changed and we recruited a bunch of JC for the Oline. Not much changed for Texas at all. Our offense had the pieces to be great with a healthy QB and not so porous Oline.

So last year's statistics have no bearing on this year's teams, but last year's recruiting rankings do? That's rich.

And it's 3 teams, including Idaho State. Don't get your short-hairs twisted by a little overall perspective based on cool, rational logic. It's actually much healthier than your reactions thus far.

Talent in recruiting classes means jack if Coach Mack can't resemble the same on the field year after year. Speed means jack if you can't read your opponents defense or offense.

Until Taysom Hill gets his PER up above Nelson and Heaps - a realistic outlook would help maintain sanity. Our remaining opponents will see film of the Texas game. They will not overlook our running game.

They will overlook our passing game. Now, how do you spell opportunity?

recruiting is the life blood of College football. Teams with more talent win more games than Teams with less talent. In all of my analysis of Texas I have qualified that Texas isn't coached as well as a lot of the teams we will play. I have acknowledged that. I think it is bush league to take away from the win by saying that Texas was poorly coached. It is what Airwolf84 would be doing if he had the nads to show his face around here.

This is merely a continuation of a discussion that was begun on this website last week, that you may or may not have participated in. Last week I suggested that Virginia's defense, especially against the run, was better than Texas'. Almost no one agreed with me. When asked why, the two main responses were "look at their recruiting talent level!" and "because, well, they're TEXAS!!" This is the same flaw that got USC ranked #1 at the beginning of last season.

Is the Texas offense the fastest that BYU will face this year? Going by average 40-yard dash time, yes. Practically? No. And the defense isn't even close.

And another correction: Oklahoma was 8-4 in 2009. That's not a bad year, only a little bit good. About what Texas is looking like right now.

Until someone stops him, talking about PER is an exercise in futility. The coaches are well aware of his current weakness and I am sure are working the team through it to get better.

Virginia was 4-8 last year while Texas was 9-4 last year. Since you enjoy looking at last years stats, that is why you weren't getting much love in your argument. Everyone was just focused on having lost to a 4-8 team. I was one that kept saying that BYU was better than the showing they had in Virginia. I was right about that too.

8-4 in Oklahoma is a bad year. Especially when they have the returning Heisman on their team.
