Is It To Early To Talk BYU @ND

Should Anae choose to focus on rushing attack portion of GFGH, I can see the running game wearing ND DL/LB down over 4 quarters as they are soft this year due to injuries. They don't have very many sacks, tackles for loss, and pressure on edges for hurried throws. This plays well into TH options for runs and play action passes. Given the performance of the backups in the ISU game (i.e. Adam Hine, Algernon Brown, AJ Moore), we may actually see more utilization of these weapons to spell JW. Ridley, Apo and Hoffman all viable options at WR and 3rd option passes can be thrown to often overlooked TE's Wilson, T. Houk and Marcus Mathews. Like WI, ND has faced ASU which runs something akin to GFGH, and likely they will adopt the approach WI successfully employed for their D strategy.

ND rushing attack is not a potent this year and Rees may have game knowledge and understanding but doesn't have the arm strength or passing skills to match his IQ. If BYU can bring pressure from the edges and stuff the run, taking away the short throws and making him throw long or to wide side of the field, it will be a long day for ND.

The loss to Pittsburg likely helped ND focus on BYU as they likely used the bye week to focus on deficiencies exposed vs the Panthers. I believe they will come into the game well prepared and seeking redemption. BYU had better be ready for ND to come out trying to make a statement and knock out punch and be able to counter attack right off the bat.

Alright a quick update on ND, I am sure I will miss something. I believe BYU will win, but it will be too close to call. I love BYU, I grew up with season tickets, my family are all alums, we are Cougar Club, without going into details we are closely tied to the program.....that being said this is the one time a year/decade I am a "black sheep" in my family, ward, with friends I grew up with as I root for ND. I wanted to note my slight leaning for this game.

ND is beat up and was beat up to start the year. ND was over ranked to start the year (I have found everything regarding ND is overhyped, we tend to be ranked too high or too low, we are either the best or the worst by the media).

Player departures from the 2012:

Offense:

QB - Kicked out for year (Golson), but you will see the same QB you faced last year in his only start in 2012 was against BYU. Tommy Rees is a good kid and smart, but he tries to make throws he cannot make. We have not capable back-ups who are ready to play.

RB- Both key RBs from last year are on NFL rosters. RB with most upside who is just getting in the swing of things is a true freshman.

OL - We lost a few guys who were in NFL camps.

TE - Lost the top TE drafted in the NFL - huge loss

WR - No major losses, just huge additions who are freshman.....still a year away from where we need to be

Defense:

DL - We lost a key player, now on the Ravens (Kapron). We had Tuitt back and Nix, both have fought injuries all year; both may be first round picks but they have not played that way due to injuries.

LB - Manti and loss of players due to career ending injuries. We have been decimated here. Will discuss below.

Secondary - DB's are the same, huge loss in safety's.

As you can see when you lose your starting QB (this was supposed to be his first real year with the reigns off - he would have been a Sophmore), NFL TE, NFL RB's, NFL dlineman and saftety.....it is natural to take a step back. As much as people no this board dislike Manti, he was the leader of the defense and we have yet to find the new leader.....Manti made every play a level above their heads.

Injuries:

Offense:

QB: Elite 11 signee got mono to start the year and will not play. We have no real back-up, other potential back-up who was a Freshman last year and was the #1 drop back QB in his class transferred when it was clear Golson (QB who was kicked out) was going to be the man

Oline: We have two OL out for the year. Right side of our line are two true freshman

RB: Top recruit at RB is out for the year.

TE: Nothing major

WR: Davaris Daniels has been hampered by hamstring issues

Defense = Decimated

DLine: Tuitt (likely first round pick) had offseason back surgery and is barely back, but has not gotten help due to other injuries.

Nix (potential first rounder) missed several games, came back vs Pitt but was ineffective due to knee injuries.

Kona Schwenke (former BYU commit) is hurt and did not play last game vs Pitt....we will likely play vs BYU but will be hindered.

Day, re-injured high ankle sprain, will not be 100%.

Isaq Williams - missed Pitt game, likely vs BYU but will be hampered.

Our entire line is depleted, against Navy we were playing a 4th string DL. We went from one of the best line in the country to not having one player healthy.

LB: this was a new crew to start the year.

Ben Councell - knee out for the year.

Jarrett Grace - knee out for the year.

Danny Spond - "retired", head issues.

Tony Springman - out for the year.

The healthy LB's we have are slow and if spread out can be taken advantage of. We can hit, and match better against the power run.

As you can see BYU should be able to run, spread these guys out and Hill should get some time and should see a slower/hindered team.

Secondary: Nothing major, other than being exposed when they don't have one of the nations top front 7 to help them.

Shumate: Hammy, will play

Collinsworth: Hammy, will play

Without a doubt this is BYU's for the taking, if they lose it is because of bad coaching or ND taking advantage of situations. BYU can and will move the ball against ND, Hill should look like a start. If the oline can protect Hill BYU's WRs will get open and BYU will score. If ND makes BYU one dimensional, I would try to take away the run and force BYU to throw and hope we can contain the WR's. EVERYONE has moved the ball on us except USC, like I said traditional offenses is what we are suited for. Best player: watch Jaylon Smith, he is a true freshman and he will be known nationally before he leaves ND....he is legit.

On defense, you will get a few chances to get INTs from Rees. Happens every game, if you take advantage you win.....each loss the other team took advantage, in our wins the other team did not, simple. Our WR's (exception Jones) are very young, but hugely talented and they will get open and Rees will go deep. If we can run and the Oline gives Rees time we will move the ball all over BYU.....if you can stop the run and force Rees to throw we will move the ball, but there will be dumb mistakes and Rees will have a long day.

In short, I expect BYU to have success moving the ball given over half the defense is "out" or greatly impacted by injuries (including every top player). I could see ND moving the ball easily, I could also see BYU shutting the run down and forcing Rees into dumb decisions. I think there will be scoring, but see BYU winning if both coaching staffs take advantages of the competitions weaknesses and both teams play to par.

I know BYU has injuries, but this is not close. ND is truly decimated on defense, I have never seen them hampered by so many injuries. If BYU does not move the ball, I will be excited for ND's back-ups but furious at BYU's coaching staff for not making easy adjustments.

Note: for all my other ND alums and friends, they look at the season as being over and they are mildly interested in the game. The crowd will be tame, they are giving away tickets (in fact I just sold mine and have 4 more if anyone wants to buy some). The view is we are prepping young guys for next year, but nothing impactful as our QB is not back until January and we are bidding our time. Lastly ND plays bad at home under Kelly, every near loss was at home (underperforming in several: Pitt, BYU, Michigan). The hope I hear from ND fans is that Kelly pulls out a way to get the team fired up to take us into the next year on a high note (heading to Stanford) similar to our 24-3 over Utah (good team, most thought would win, down team and Kelly turned them around).

Either way best of luck to the Cougars, it is like seeing two children play each other.

lamest post ever. To sum up a long and unsightful post: this is my excuse if byu beats notre dame and it is injuries. given notre dame's recruiting they should be 8 times deeper than byu and you don't hear byu whining about not being able to win because of injuries. who cares if you have more injuries, you should have 8 more skilled back ups.

you sound afraid and too eager to provide an excuse why a lowly team like byu might beat your mighty irish or whatever you are.

i hope byu beats the crap out of notre dame. notre dame's elitist attitude is nauseating to me.

for your info our injuries are

anae (starter offensive lineman)

reynolds (starting offensive lineman)

mathews (starging offensive lineman)

apo (quasi starting receiver)

mathews (receiver, backup)

falslev (punt returner, starting receir)

alisa (starting running back)

defense

kanuch (starting d tackle)

jorgenson (back up linebacker)

hadly (starting linebacker)

trammel (starting cornerback)

johnson (starting cornerback)

hanneman (2nd string cornerback)

peoples (dtackle)

no excuses hear. Beat the domers who are afraid they are going to lose to lowly byu!

No excuses here, every team has injuries.......ours unfortunately are key contributors. On the DL we literally have not one person 1-3 string healthy. A lot the names you show are contributors, but most are most are back correct? Every person I mentioned was a starter or key contributor. Maybe BYU is as decimated, but I don't see it......ND has never had so many injuries, at least that I have ever experienced.

Imagine if you took away TH, Van Noy had missed serious time, F'ua was hurt, two of the OL were done for the year that it would impact your team.

Just stating why I think BYU wins, injuries play a factor whether you like it or not. If I were elitist I would be telling you the opposite, I would say our walk-ons would beat BYU etc etc. Not so, giving nothing but credit to BYU and why they will win.

Not sure what ND has done to offend you with the elitist attitude? We are generally known to be great fans to opponents. What you see in the media is pure hype, ND sells and putting blather out there gets attention.

Not sure what I could have done to be insightful? I went position by position where the holes are and how BYU should attack. I also stated where ND could be strong. I guess I should not state injuries, not mention deficiencies, don't pretend it is a down year and only pretend that we are full strength so it does not appear to be an excuse? Sounds totally logical to me.

Curious what has rubbed you the wrong way? I would guess a lot of what you say many of BYU opponents say about them.

Either way, you are welcome to your opinion and good luck Saturday. It is a shame that both teams have lost games they should have won (in fact every game).

Well thought out, I agree. You can run on ND, I would pound them on GFGH. Where them out and make the big guys meant for pro style offenses (Tuitt and Nix) tired. I would run option away from Tuitt. If TH is on it will be a long day for the Irish.

Funny thing is ND can have a decent rushing attack but Kelly keeps allowing Rees to ineffectively pass the ball. You are right, Rees simply put is a mid-level MAC QB. ND's best chance every game is to establish the run, make it a threat, control the clock then start to throw it. Kelly does the opposite. We win when Rees does not turn the ball over and lose when he does.

Both teams are banged up, but ND has more depth. If BYU wins it will be a big time victory for the programs. Going on the road and beating major programs with a winning record is rare for us.

Hopefully, we commit to the run game. We are a far better rushing team than throwing team. That will give us a shot. If ND wants to turn over the ball a few times that would be much appreciated.

Both teams are beat up, ND is a bit more beat up in key positions......aka the entire front 7 with every DL starter being hurt or out for the year. ND has toyed with starting their starting TE on DL too. Why does ND have more depth? What makes you assume that, I assume you must follow the team? I may agree in certain positions but ND has major holes on both lines (OL is strong on the left side and has two freshman on the right side who inherited roles after season ending injuries to starters).

It would be a quality win vs a bowl eligible team that is unranked. That being said ND has 3 losses, two were to bad teams (Michigan and Pitt). ND has struggled in nearly all wins. Can ND win? Yes. Based on what I have seen having watched all ND and BYU games who do I think wins? Close call but BYU has no excuse not to win. They match-up well and if the game is managed correctly BYU wins.

all starters except for those i pointed out. our key positions of concern were corner and d tackle. we lost FOUR CORNERS and one of our two serviceable dtackles who was looking like he would be our starter. if there wree two position we could not lose they were dtackle and corner. this d would be better with our starting corners and no vannoy arguably.

also three starters on offensive line seems like a big deal. you can see that is i probably our biggest weakness on offense. injuries excuses are lame and that is what rubbed me the wrong way. you were making excuses preparing for a loss. if we win it will be because notre dame had injuries, not because byu is better. that rubbed me the wrong way.

and you obviously are not a huge byu fan if you don't even know that jordan johnson or jd falslev are starters.

all starters except for those i pointed out. our key positions of concern were corner and d tackle. we lost FOUR CORNERS and one of our two serviceable dtackles who was looking like he would be our starter. if there wree two position we could not lose they were dtackle and corner. this d would be better with our starting corners and no vannoy arguably.

also three starters on offensive line seems like a big deal. you can see that is i probably our biggest weakness on offense. injuries excuses are lame and that is what rubbed me the wrong way. you were making excuses preparing for a loss. if we win it will be because notre dame had injuries, not because byu is better. that rubbed me the wrong way.

and you obviously are not a huge byu fan if you don't even know that jordan johnson or jd falslev are starters.

I do know that, of course and not sure I even mentioned Jordan or JD, did I?

Injuries impact teams....I heard from BYU fans last year "if Hill played vs ND.....". Is that different? That could have impacted the game, just like NDs back up starting the game could impact the game too. Certain injuries hurt worse than others, that is a fact. JD is great, would JD being hurt or Van Noy being hurt impact the outcome more? The equivalent of our Van Noy has been injured all year and depth around him is gone. Our QB is gone, how would you be without TH? Would you rather have JD out or TH?

Any way, we can disagree. Maybe you know a lot about the depth of ND and can compare to the match ups vs BYU. I would love to hear it, especially when I am told certian things about both teams injuries or guys being out....maybe numbers wise it is equal but not impact to team. This year for ND is a throw away year and BYU should win.

I am done on this topic, we can disagree and that is fine. Time to end the longest thread I have seen. I am interested in talking about the game, not who has the bigger excuse.

It won't hurt my feelings if you don't read my comments if you believe they are off base.

Easy Johnny. You might be accurate but i Sensed no malicious or crappy attitude.

ND keep on a posting. I heard on a radio interview with a ND media making a few excuses as well, but when he pointed out that a MLB was playing at Nose, at 6'2" 250, that is simply to sustainable.

Bottom line.

ND should be deeper than BYU.

BYU is injured bu not as badly as ND.

Home field advantage, Srs last game, bad, bad weather, which is always a great equalizer....

And ND easily could show up and walk away winners. Conversely so also could BYU, which Is why the spread is like 1 point.

And, of course, we will likely not hear until gametime who else may have gotten injured or suspended on either team during bye for ND and pseudo bye for BYU.

Crap shoot on this one.

All fair points. Only comment is, ND has played worse at home the past few years than they should. No idea why, but we have not seemed as focused etc. No excuse, home field should be huge advantage, but Kelly has never taken advantage like he should. My opinion there is too much hoopla going on: pep rally night before, generally other events/commitments with media, mass (it has changed this year), the walk to the stadium, catching-up with certain alums or celebs/well known people, plus added interviews with NBC in town etc. and them the game. No firm correlation just my hypothesis....if I were Kelly I would cut as many disrractions as possible.

Either way, I believe BYU will win. They have better match-ups and the coaches should capatilize. That being said it is a toss up and will be a great game. The field will be ugly, potentially a bigger disadvantage to BYU.

Here is my take: Notre Dame is a win over Pittsburgh away from being ranked 20-23. Put all the injury crap aside and you still have a good team.

Notre Dame recruits at an elite level and so their backups are VERY capable. Not capable to make them a top 10 team but capable enough for them to be a fringe top 25 team going to a bowl game.

Byu having injuries is a much bigger deal. This is what separates mid majors to majors. DEPTH!!!! Behind Hadley/Jorgensen we have Manoa P. who we recruited as a FB!!! Behind JD we move over a WR to catch punts and have a no name or TE move over in the slot.

Byu is very good 1 deep, ND and other BCS elites are very good 2 guys deep. I'm not trying to bash my cougars here but were comparing apples to apples when it is apples to oranges.

ND was in the top 25 this year with a back-up QB. Ask Utah how hard it is to even win a game with a backup.

I thought we were done talking injuries! ;)

All good points. I am not saying that we are Weber State, but when comparing ND's strengths with available players and factoring current health against BYU vs its strengths with available players at BYU factoring in current health it favors BYU. If both sides were completely healthy and ND had their suspended/expelled QB who will be back next year there is no question the ND is favored. ND would roll into this game with 0-2 losses, outside chance of being undefeated.....losing our QB was that big a deal (Michigan and Pitt would have been wins).

Injuries damage BYU more dramatically than ND, no doubt, and given that I think ND can even stick with BYU it says a lot about some of the guys they do have. That being said I have never seen a front 7 become so beat up ever at ND nor BYU. We will move the ball but I really don't see any way we stop you. If we take advantage on offense it could be a long day and ND is due a break out offensive game.

Our secondary was average coming into the year and really was covered up last year by one of the nations top front seven. You lose Te'o to the NFL, other starting LB retired due to health issues, the two other starters blew out their knees......yes losing your 3 of 4 starting LB's hurts but we added a stud in Jaylon Smith (true freshman). The entire dline has been hurt, Tuitt has not be injured but is still recovering from back surgery. This hurts.

This is not an excuse, not sure how to make it any more clear. Injuries impact the game. Based on what I see with injuries baked in BYU has the advantage, not an excuse just my opinion. I love BYU and if they pull out a win, I will be happy, my slight lean is ND in terms of allegiance but ND is playing for nothing this year.....last year would have hurt, this year means very little. Same with BYU if ND wins, it stings a bit but you move on.

ND beat USC last year, did it help and potentially change the impact of the game that Matt Barkley was out......it is very possible. Injuries impact the game of football and every team it has varying impacts based on depth, player specific injuries, who is hurt etc. A good portion of having a great year vs good year is player health, no major injuries last year and this year there are some.

Apologies to those who believe I am making excuses in advance. I am not, just trying to give honest insights as how I see the game play out based on the players. If I was calling for an ND victory most of the people accusing me of making excuses would be calling me an ND homer and not a real BYU fan etc etc

ND. Ignore them. You have provided the visiting team insight that many of us wish a visitor would politely bring every game. You have been a class act. Thank You.

Some people hate anything and everything and everyone to do with Notre Dame.

If BYU beats, ND, it will be like beating Texas or even better as time passes and we forget all of the details, and just look at the list of wins and losses and see a W by ND. The injuries on both sides will have an impact, but those will be forgotten with time and it will be a BYU win over ND. That will be huge for BYU.

If ND wins, it will not be any big hurrah in the long term for the Irish.

Thank you. Decent overview but a few things are not accurate or made clear:

- mentions Rees coming off his best game of the year. I believe the writer meant TJ Jones.

- Watch out for Troy Niklas, really improving at TE. I could see him playing a bigger role than mentioned. We also run behind him quite a bit

- "ND will attempt to establish a strong run presense"......ha ha, post that on an nd board and see the response. The feeling is Kelly loves to pass, to a fault and forces it even when it makes sense to run. Very sore subject, it is easy to force Kelly to pass and this is what BYU should want.

- mentions a lot of Atkinson as an RB. Touches are decreasing, he is great north and south (burner)....BYU should make him go east to west. Look for McDaniels to get the most touches and Folston to continually get more. If Atkinson gets the most touches nd is in trouble, he is not an every down back. My guess the writer is simply reviewing the stats. Atkinson got more carries early on and McDaniels is getting more as the season goes on. Folston is a true freshman and could play a role. Atkinson is burner and can take it to the house, majority or yards off of big runs but takes easy losses by getting creative and can't catch the ball.

- "ND's OL is full of talent". True but on the left side of the ball. The right side are freshman. Yet it states we struggle with run blocking. Clearly their are some holes. Tommy does throw the ball quick and not take sacks BUT if pressured he does turn it over a ton.

- nothing inaccurate about the defense, just very light on actual info. DBs will play deep and the short passes and slants will be open. Goal is not to get beat deep. BYU needs to spread out ND and force the LBs into coverage where they struggle and are slow while forcing the WRs into 1x1 situations. I would also already them out to give TH some lanes to run. Our DL could get some pressure on TH but we struggle to contain on mobile QBs.

Good article, thanks for sending.

To take the opposite view I will post at some point how I would attack BYU if I were ND, I would love others perspective.

Is there someway you can take all of the posts ever made in a thread I created and split them equally between Johhny and Cougs Rule. I am not even sure if thesr are counted or what a high tslly means, but this is clearly important to these two. Give my brownie points to those guys. Wait - find out who else cares how many posts they have or how many posts were made in a thread that they crested and share mine amongst all of them.

And then for future threads and posts just randomly give mine to someone else.

My point was to not completely discredit ND's injuries BUT to point out that their backups are plenty capable to get the win. ND's backups are ranked higher than most of the teams BYU has played this year. Complements to Notre Dame and Brian Kelly.

As mentioned earlier; the great equalizer is the weather. You mentioned earlier that the field has been bad. This could really hurt Byu's offensive advantage. Taysom hasn't had 1 good game passing the ball in bad weather.(UVA,UT,UW - total 41-107 3TD 3INT)

I think this game will be low scoring and ugly and will come down to a FG for either team to win.
