I have more issues with BYU'S inability to make free throws. You can't miss 14 free throws in an overtime loss. Free throws have been the biggest culprit the losses this year.

Yes, but fix Carlino and you fixed a big part of clock management problems last night even help with FREEthrows bc he has the ball and gets fouled. Get the ball out of KCs hands in last two minutes--he really is atrocious at FTs.

For the whole season? Absolutely. But in this game it was not the biggest culprit. We had a sufficient lead in spite of poor FT shooting. Late game management lost this one.

In this game it most certainly was the biggest culprit. We were tied at the end of regulation just ONE more free throw make and we in. We missed TWELVE (12) of them in regulation. We were 18-30 (.600) in regulation. If we go 19-30 (.633) we win.

Nate Austin missed a FT w/ 1:15 left. Make that and we win. Erik Mika went 3-9 (.333). If he goes 4-9 we win.

Free throws lost us that game. Oregon had no fear of fouling us as we weren't making them pay at the line.

You can go 1 for 2 at the line when you're up 7 with just over 2 minutes to go and still easily win. Run all 35 seconds off the clock and miss. They go down and score quickly and there's maybe 1:20 left and we're still up 5. Run another :35 and miss and we give up another bucket. Now say there's :40 left up 3. At this point the game is in our hands even in this worst case scenario. We can miss our shot and they have only 1 more realistic chance at tying the game.

And if we get the ball with 35 or fewer seconds left then Rose has proven he's smart enough to know that only Haws should be catching the ball off the inbounds. Haws is the only player we can trust to hit 2/2. At that point the game is over.

FT did not lose this game because if we played things correctly we never would've relied on Austin, Mika, or anyone else but Haws to even shoot them!

Why bicker over which 1 thing cost us the game when any of a few things would have made a difference

Clock management was poor for whatever reason - coaching or players not playing as coached

Selfishness

Poor FT shooting

Missed shots

Failure to finish shots while being hammered a bit

Defensive lapses

Fouling the wrong guy

letting Oregon foul the right guys

Refs - Charging call

Bad passes

Stupid fouls - fouling out

Lack of depth inside when guys foul out

We are not a top 25 team and there are several reasons why.

Inexperienced teams lose close games to good teams on the road.

Fair enough.I was wondering why the ball wasn't in Tyler's hands those last two minutes.

BYU would have been better off with a shot clock violation than those early anrushed shots and turnovers.

I did find it interesting that we didn't shoot many free throws the final six or seven minutes. I didn't get to w watch the game only listened. Why did we stop going to the line? To many jumpers? Could we not get to the rim? Was Oregon's defense that good at the end?

Oregon never had to foul. BYU took rushed shots, tried to pound it inside which resulted in turnovers, and Carlino drove coast to coast and was turned away. All of those possessions took a total of less than a minute off the clock. Why Mika or KC had the ball at all during the last 4 minutes I'll never know. Should have been haws, carlino, bartley and Halford on the floor with Mika just to get boards.

And Austin decided to NOT pass the ball to a decent FT shooter and was fouled 90 feet from our basket, which turned into an excellent foul for Oregon (as mentioned, he went 1-2). Oregon basically knew exactly who to foul and it worked out for them.

What this basically boils down to is that BYU has no half court offense. They are WAY more comfortable rushing full speed ahead and getting a shot off before the defense recovers. But the shots weren't dropping, Oregon was getting turnovers with ease, and FTs were missed when there was a chance to take them. And Calliste had a Gerry Mcnamara like performance to put the cougs out of their misery.

It's nice that we're so bad at so many things that we can't pin this loss all on one problem. Hooray!

Things will start to look much better when we quit playing ranked teams and other undefeated or 1 loss teams especially on the road.

When is Oregon coming to Provo?

I thought we played a great game, and I'd love to think that we smash the WCC this season, but there will be lapses. The question is can we get enough stops on D against these lesser teams now that perhaps Rose will be playing more man? I would sure think so.
