Halford

I still wonder if Halford will disappear against good perimeter defenders. Though maybe Haws draw the best defender.

Everyone disappears a bit vs good defenders. If an opponent has 5 lock - down defenders, things get ready tough. With most oppinents, if they focus one of their best guys on Halford ad another on Haws - Mika and KC will get some looks. We really only have 4 threats to score on the floor most of the time, so a team with 5 good defenders will give us trouble.

Well it didn't take too long. Halford seems to have found the doghouse for a lot of fans. Personally, I still think he's a valuable contributor with a good motor. My opinion of him hasn't changed all year, but I never though he would be a Haws/Jimmer/Emery type player to begin with. I have noticed that Halford has not been as aggressive as he was earlier this season. Maybe watching that short leash on Carlino has made him a bit gun shy.

You are right in this case that he found the dog house for some short termed memory fans.

He never was going to be a top player. But he helped seal the game vs SMC. And he shot 50% and didn't commit turnovers. He played exactly for what he was recruited for last night. Winder is hot right now and a better defender. But watch if we play USD, bc Halford did a great defensive job on Johhny D.

I will disagree on the short leash with Carlino. I will say shortened, because it was too long for too long of a run of games before Rosé pulled it back.

Last night Carlino hit his first three just seconds in from his entrance into the game and Carlino started celebrating like he just hit a half court shot. And Rose waved his arms downward several times and told him to calm down and stay focused, which Carlino proceeded to do. But MC was ready to get on his manic high again. rosé has down a good job reining him in.

Kid was 2/2 for four points, 3 boards, 1 assist in about five minutes early in the game. Then he missed two shots: now we all hate him.

I like Halford, and still like him. He'll provide good minutes for this team and is a good calming influence when for when things start to spiral out of control. I like having Winder start right now, because it's appears to be better for the team. But I don't believe starting is a right for anyone, whatever best helps the team.

I just don't think he should be a starter. He has a very nice mid-range game and wish he would utilize it more than jacking 3's.

Halford is a great guy and solid player. Winder is just better and it showed last night, particularly on defense.

Halford is a non-D1 player who is trying really, really hard. Almost all of Gonzaga's runs last night came with him on the floor. Shouldn't get more than 10 to 15 mins a game.

During the Pacific game, it was obvious he was the only non-D1 athlete on the court for either team...and Pacific is the bottom dweller of the conference (even beating us). He's the second worst defender on the perimeter for the team (behind Haws, and that's simply because Haws doesn't try on defense most of the time).

It is not that black and white - no pun intended - I think, but black athletes are few and far enough between for BYU that they stand out.

Go back to last year and tell me who the African American is in that clip they ran over and over last week that stepped aside and waved goodbye as Dellavadova threw up the Dellavadagger.

Winder is great sometimes. Not so great other times. Match ups matter. Both Halford and Winder have benefitted at times from being a surprise element when opponents focus too much on Haws and KC. So has MC. They all run hot and cold. Rose works with what he has to work with. We do not have 5 legitimate starters no matter how you mix and match them.

If Winder plays like that a few games in a row and especially away from home - I will change my tune. Right now it does not matter who Rose starts. They are all getting the minutes they earn. Winder was earning more minutes and he got them. Whether he starts or not, his minutes will be up. Halford's will be less. Next time we need 2 for 2 FTs on the road, I hope it is either Halford or Haws taking them. And if Winder gets his average over 80 - add him. Last I looked, he had dropped below 70. Maybe last night got him back over 70.

Winder now 72.9% on FTs.

I looked that up earlier. Thanks for the link. I cannot get my phone to post those. Data goes beyond the emotion and bias. I got some other insights when I looked here today. 3 point shooting. Will start a thread.

When Winder went 10-10 last night having only shot about 45 FT attempts prior, it jumped him well above 70. Now we have three players that meet BYULV's individual player expectation.

I can tell that the mental struggles are mounting for some players. Mostly KC. He added some new motion without the ball seeming to try to convince himself that he could make it. Doomed when that is happening. Clank. Carlin did a little of that too, but after the 1-1 on the first trip he nailed both on the next trip.

Collinsworth seemed to be progressing 3 weeks ago, but he has regressed badly the last 2 weeks.

KC has several injuries. And he has been carrying this team in so many ways. I'm sure he's a bit fatigued. He has gone from overall stats leader in most categories to not that. So, yes, he's down a bit. But "regressed badly"? So much for the elimination of "emotion and bias."

The issue for me was he was 0-2 from 3pt and had a couple of WIDE open looks. I know, I know small sample size but if Halford is not hitting open 3's, while providing little else, and is playing the 2 in our offense thats a tough pill to swallow. I know I shouldn't put him under such scrutiny but when your sole purpose is to come off the bench and hit open 3's and you are not doing it at a high enough % it's hard for me to get behind that player no matter who it is.

He has regressed badly only on FT shooting. He still fills the star sheet pretty well otherwise. Here is what I said.

He was progressing 3 weeks ago. I meant FT shooting. Look at his individual numbers in box scores game by game. He had worked on FT shooting and you could tell he had been working on it. BYULV had commented on his improved form, iirc.

I am a huge KC supporter. His various injuries may be a factor. He may have focused on it too much and it is in his head now. IDK. Check the box scores. You will see the rise and fall. He clearly is not confident at the line right now.

So, because in your mind Halford is supposed to shoot spot-up threes, it doesn't matter that he grabs boards, dishes, or hits inside the arc. If he misses threes, then he's no good.

Schmoe, take some Midol. It worked for me.

By Beaso's standards he should hate all 3 point shooters. Yes, it would have been a nail in the coffin if he hit that late 3 vs Zags, but maybe Beauso should take some Realitol-- to help induce reality therapy.

I hear you, Bib. In fact, vs, Zags, In the first half, I could see from my seats I could see a good side view of his shooting technique. Clearly, he had been working on his arm and release motion. Two problems. His form while improved, and I would say even very recently improved, looked very awkward to him, IMO. THe other big big problem is he wasn't bending his knees--at least on the first FT, which he clanked; then he bent his knees on the second and made it. Kinda tough to mess with a shooters technique and shot during the season. Probably should have waited till off season. But, good to see he realizes there is a problem and has made strides to fix it. But, between injuries, rigors of the season under his all out effort, and messing with his shot, no wonder his overall effectiveness is down slightly to moderately.

When you have Carlino and Winder who do exactly what you described but better and shoot 3's at about the same clip and have the ability to finish in traffic with contact then I think they should be splitting all of Halfords minutes, especially when he's not hitting 3's. I never said he was no good but as of right now I think the only time he needs to be on the floor is at the end of a game when we need to hit some FT's

It worked for awhile, his form and % were much better, then he reverted back to his old form. The biggest thing I notice when he is struggling is that he hesitates halfway through his shooting motion, makes it difficult to make consistently.
