I haven't been able to watch this one.

What happened to Winder?

Can Santa Clara play D? We are shooting 60% from the field.

Are we playing well or is Santa Clara just really bad?

Solid road win. Haws with 2 fouls in first :45 and sits rest of half. Shot the ball well and shared it well. Lead in 2nd half fluctuated from 24 to 10 to 24 to final 91-81. Santa Clara wouldn't quit. Their guards are tough and shot it well. Freshman went off for 30. Cougs did what they had to this weekend. Need to make it happen again next weekend.

Very balanced scoring from a number of players in double figures: Mika, Winder, Carlino, KC and Haws.

Winder was the hero in this game. Haws picked up 2 fouls in the first 45 seconds and had to sit. Winder came in and racked up 16 points. We were struggling in the 2nd and Winder came in but they were on him tight. Santa Clara went on a run and wasn't till Carlino came back in that we stopped the bleeding.

Santa Clara had some good guards. Not much of an inside presence.

Nice answer to that run.

Just realized why the first half zone defense looked so good. Haws was on the bench. BYU's defense is about 7500% more effective at getting to shooters when he is not playing.

LOL, I noticed the same thing. He gets owned on the boards too. It's one of those crappy dilemmas where he has to play because of his O, but if this team can't get stops vs the remaining big boys he's gonna have to sit.

9 assists for Carlino. We are a different team when he has confidence in everyone else and plays to get them involved. He knows he can get his shot, but that's not when we're at our best. Gotta be a PG first MC.

Not only that but he is getting his shots within the offense right now and is money. When he tries to press too much he struggles, when he plays within himself and the offense he is awesome. He is playing really well right now and it makes BYU really really good.

Great points, both. The optimist/fantasizer remained big Carlino fans. The realists and "haters" saw him for the hot mess that he had become. I'd like to think I'm a realist more than a hater. Never hated the kid just the jack-at-all-times behavior. He played a great game last night and has been trending much better over the last 3-4 games. However, I have both eyes wide open and I hope Rose does as well. If Carlino keeps turning in games like this, there will be pressureto put him back in starting lineup. I think Carlino is too prone to mental breakdowns and slumps to determine that he has learned his lesson and his role and is "all Better." Keep the leash on him Coach, Please!

He is doing well coming off the bench. If it ain't broke - no need to fix it. He does not need to start. When he plays well, he is getting his minutes. He made it clear - he does not want to play 2. He is back-up 1.

This is where the versatility of KC comes in. If MC is playing well at back-up 1, Collinsworth can go 3 or 4 and MC will get his minutes.

Travelling. Did not see game. BYU exceeded my expectations on offense. Defense must have softened after a great start. If I read correctly - these players all had double figures on offense.

KC

MC

Haws

Winder

Mika

Halford

That will win some games - especially if they play defense.

As some others have stated our defense was much better while Haws was on the bench, especially zone.

We had a 20+ point lead in the first half with Haws riding the bench. We played better without him. Between Winder and Carlino locking down the perimeter there wasn't a thing Santa Clara could do.

Haws can shoot, but that's about it.

Exactly, the key to making BYU's zone work is rotation to the corner. Haws often does this very slowly, either giving up open threes, or forcing the zone to adapt and then it has soft spots where other shooters can take advantage. Winder was awesome playing one of the guard positions. Sharp also rotates VERY well, his anticipation is awesome. Which, I believe, is what makes Sharp a solid contributor on this team. He has the energy and the instincts to know how to get to the ball. And he does a good job of getting a couple easy buckets, even more so than Nate austin.

Does anybody own a human hybridization machine (like the one from the Simpsons) that allows us to combine 2 separate entities?

Haws' shooting + KC's overall game = a complete All-American. Instead we have 2 guys with weaknesses that are damnable.

There's no way Haws sits even though we literally cannot get stops against good teams when he's out there on D, and that's a problem.

Yes. Like 300 or so other teams, BYU does not have a 1st round pick on our basketball team. Not one. So what? We sure do not have 5. We are not Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, or in The Big East and we will not be. We are not even Gonzaga, UCLA, or Arizona in basketball legacy.

So, Instead, we have some decent enough, but incomplete players for coach Rose to arrange and re - arrange based on opponents and match - ups with varying levels of experience. A relatively young team. Plays great in Provo but is inconsistent on the road. Fun to watch. Usually competitive. Close games. Fun to watch.

I think Sharp is just physically quicker.

Maybe, but not THAT much quicker. Haws has a guard telling him 3-5 times to rotate before he actually does it.

I've been saying this for months. We didn't lose that steak of games because of Carlino. We lost them because (besides the Oregon game) Haws came into each half with something like 6 or 7 points, and I even remember one game he had only 3 shots at the half!

I would like to welcome everyone else to the "Other people besides Matt Carlino's Eesh stinks too" club.

And Winder wasn't the one locking down defenders. Some people think because he is black he must be an amazing man defender. He isn't. Halford plays MUCH better man to man defense, and is probably more athletic overall. and Carlino out there at the same time was key for defense. Sure, we were scoring when Winder was in, but they were also scoring (because he can't play man defense almost at all, gives up the penetration easy and always leaves his feet on the up fake).

It was when Carlino came in and played side by side with Halford that we really stretched the lead, in both halves. They need to both be starting together, at one and two, and then slide Haws down to the 3, where he has a prayer of playing man defense.

We lost games because we went up to Utah thinking they were the same team of the last 3-4 years. They beat us and then we didn't have another home game for three weeks. So we never had that patsy to regain our confidence.

A blind man, if objective about it, can see that off - the - bench Carlino playing along side Halford WITHIN HIMSELF, and as a point guard should be focused in TEAM play is a much different Carlino than the starting PG Carlino that just could not seem to get the memo from Rose that hos selfish, out - of - control style was infectious and had the entire team standing around due to not ever expecting to see a pass and jacking up shots on bad looks rather than working for the team to get a better shot.

Rose had to solve that. He tried a memo relegating Carlino to the two spot. Carlino did not get that memo either and made it clear that he did not want to accept that role. So Rose rolled Carlino to the bench and Carlino got the memo that the world does not revolve around Matt Carlino. He forgets his role on occasion even now, but only on rare occasion now.

It is finally working. Let's keep it that way. And now, players seem more inclined to play defense and try to create a miss and grab a rebound rather than racing to the other end of the court before opponent shots even hit the rim in hopes to get down there before a selfish teammate launches a forced shot.

I am not contending that Haws is a great defender. He is not. Neither was Jimmer. Both had roles and both filled those roles as directed by Dave Rose.

We have imperfect players. It gets worse when they do not play as coached.

Utah is a dangerous team at home. Not so much on the road. Just like BYU. Oregon is a better team than BYU even if the game had not been in their house. BYU nearly pulled off a huge upset.

All WCC teams are dangerous at home this season. Ask Gonzaga. Hopefully Portland will not get hot vs BYU Thursday.
