Yes, because working on your jump shot has zero effect on how you shoot FT's. smh

Do you think you could allow for KC to break away from that focus and work on his free throws?

Nah. HIs free throws will improve with just a few home games. His poor FT % is just a myth. ;)

LOL :P :P

Classic.

it will. He might hit 60%. BYU team FT % is average. KC's is terrible.

Totally agree. Working on your jump shot has little effect on your free throw shooting. That is why players don't just step in there and jump off a shot. FT shooting should be an exact repetition practiced over and over and over. No variables. Smh

If your stroke sucks on jump shots it will suck on FT's too. That's why he can't do either. No, the only variation is the jumping. It's all about squaring up and straightening your stroke and and his is as straight as a sawed-off pistol.

I've advocated for granny shots for KC since he came back. That would at least help his biggest weakness by at least 15% imo.

Do you think practicing his jump shot will help granny?

Seriously - there is quite a bit of variation in a jump shot - esp the jump. Pull up. Fade away. Moving left. Moving right. Running. Kick out in rhythm. Moving away from the basket. Moving toward the basket.

memo from Mizou to team

Worry not ye lads who sucketh at the stripe. No need to practice the FT now or ever. Just practice those jumpers and the FTs will drain the net.

wait..........

I think they already got that memo.

Why do I even bother engaging Bib? Change the subject, obfuscate. I'm done. He doesn't play or know the game.

The subject was this. You said KC should only practice jump shooting. Only. Exclusively. I said he might want to practice shooting free throws. You said that shooting jump shots is all the practice he needs for shooting three throws since the stroke is the same. I said BS. Who changed your subject. Who seems to know nothing about free throw shooting. Free throw shooting is at least as much mental as physical - because you have forever to think about each shot. That is why exact repetition matters. It gives you something concrete to focus on while confidently stroking it.

And if you focus on all of that, maybe you turn it into a quick reflex at the end of the ritual, kind of like a jump shot.

Oh - and after claiming that practicing his jump shot would fix his free throw shooting. Then you say he should switch to Granny. Why? If all that jump shot practice would fix his stroke? But If we ignore that logic disconnect, we get back to my suggestion that he also carve out some time for free throw shooting. Granny is definitely a different stroke for different folks. Might take some practice. You know. In addition to that jump shot practice.

Just trying to hang with your flawed logic. No offense intended.

According to Mika's tweet to the right, his mission papers are in. Looks like we don't need to speculate anymore whether he's going or not.

I was wondering about this as I have seen Rose seemingly trying to get Worthington a lot more meaningful minutes - prepping for the future maybe.

I hope Worthington practices his FT shooting in the off season.

With Mika headed on mission I hope we ask Andrus to serve a mission immediately and have Dastrup play a year before he leaves. I just don't see how we can afford to have 2 projects in Andrus and Worthington on the team at the same time next year.

And don't forget project Nielson as well. Mika will be a huge loss. Maybe more so than Davies was this year when comparing apples to apples across the board and across the seasons. Time will tell.

Not buying that. If we had Senior Davies instead of Freshman Mika this year, BYU would have won several more games. I

And with Mika injuries and up and down play, BYU played without him fully present quite a bit.

Bib, you aren't picking up on my gist on this one. What I am saying is that the chasm in the post might be greater next year sans Mika than it is this year sans Davies. Nothing to do with anyone not being better or worse. Where do you even come up with me implying BYU wouldn't have won a few more games this year with a Senior Davies instead of a Frosh Mika? Now, will the team have more wins next year sans Mika compared to this year sans Davies? I sure hope so, but like I said time will tell. Regardless, it won't be an apples to apples comparison since schedule will be quite different as will be personnel. Hence my hypothetical presumption. Sometimes you come across as utterly Biblarious. Go Cougars!
C
Cougarbib
I got your gist. Davies was a huge loss - filled reasonably well.

Mika will be a smaller loss, and although I agree that we have less of a refill available next year, the net gap will be smaller.

ie

if Davis is 10, Mika was 6.5 = drop of 3.5

Mika 6.5 may be replaced with a 4.0 = drop of 2.5

unfortunately, 2 drops in a row.

Big pluses 2 years in a row everywhere else will more than offset.

This year - Davies graduated and went to NBA - took some doing, but he got there. But NBA confirmed what most of us already knew. Davies played the 5 at BYU out of neccessity. Davis is really a 4. BYU has not had a true 5 for a long time. So BYU manages around not having a true 5 almost every year.

With Mika gone, BYU will not have a 5 next year either.

BYU will do what they do almost every year. They will fill the 4 and 5 with two fours or go small and fill it with a 3 and a 4. They will mix it up.

So this year out went Davies in came Mika - direct replacement. Pretty easy to compare and measure.

Next year out goes Mika, who will be replaced by smoke, mirrors, musical chairs and committee. But BYU will have a lot more chairs and better music to work with.

In 2013/14 BYU really only had 2.5 starters and not much of a bench. Losing Davies was killer since that dropped BYU to 1.5 starters - Haws and the up and down Carlino.

I took a lot of heat early for saying Collinsworth would be key. But poor FT shooting aside, KC has played like a starter. That got us back up to 2.5. Mika had played like a starter at least half of the time getting us to 3.0 starters if not 3.5. Somewhere with Halford being at least .25 and Austin being at least .25, we played like at least 4 starters on the court. Our bench was better, too.

So with Mika leaving, there is much more in place that is not leaving and most of them will improve by next year.

Hopefully, one of the fresh faces will step up as those guys improve, and BYU will usually have 4 or more guys on the floor that look like starters.

That is my logic. Not some blue goggled pipe dream that a true 5 will pop out of nowhere.

Haws and KC will be the go to guys. Carlino will play a ton. They will be backed up by Halford, Winder, and Bartley or someone better. Solid at 1, 2, and 3.

Collinsworth will play some 4. Austin will play some 4 and 5. Worthington will see a lot of minute at 5/4. Josh Sharp will play some 4. A new face needs to pop into this mix and make an impact. There are some good candidates.

The non conference schedule should be a bit kinder. Conference schedule might be tougher. BYU should be OK. Not elite. Ok.

The transfer from UNLV will man the 4 in January.

Next year's team has the best chance to go deep in the tourney that we have had in a very long time. The reason is seniors. Teams with experience do well. Next year's team will be better in all areas than this year's team. Mark it down.

Austin will step up to help fill Mika loss. He's already a strong RBder and hustle guy. Sharp and Worthington should be additional rebounders/defenders, while Andrus and Nielson should bring some height for helping clean the glass.Carlino, Halford and Chase should improve the outside shooting. Haws and KC should be much improved in FG/FT shooting, and should provide ample points/double figures every game. If Barkley and Winder improve game, they will provide good perimeter D. Solid team next year that should be knocking at door for NCAA tourney.

I like this post. And agree, next year has some solid returning players and will have a good mix of potential contributors. BUT, it's Frank BARTLEY IV, not Barkley.
