Way to learn from that bowl loss to Arizona.

Please keep in mind that football is the team's fifth priority. I am wondering if BYU should even accept the bowl invitation considering its proximity to Christmas, which shlould be spent at home with family.

also per cougartracks:

Asked about the notion that a fourth consecutive trip to Vegas sapped some of his team's excitement ahead of the 2008 bowl meeting with Arizona, Mendenhall left no doubt that this year's group is indeed excited to face Oregon State in Vegas. He said while Arizona was a good football team, the trip's regularity combined with disappointment over losing out on a BCS bowl opportunity affected his team last year.

"I think just the opposite will be in place this year...we're playing a very good football team, a team that I know our players are excited to play... and I think that in and of itself has them kind of chomping at the bit to get back to Las Vegas and to play well. I think none of us felt like we played maybe to our full potential a year ago, and so I think that...is a motivating factor to go back and do it at a higher level."

This should be a good bowl game. Our guys are going to come emotionally charged and hungry to finish better than they did last year. Especially our seniors.

Not to mention that this is the Coach's Alma Mater should be motivation enough, let alone that they are playing a ranked team for the first time in the LV Bowl.

I think the team will come out ready and the coaches will have them prepared. They know they are in for a game with OSU.

How many bowls have 2 ranked opponents? does anyone know?

I know a lot do, but this seems like one of the better match-ups as far as bowls go.

I think we all should go to BYU's first practice and remove Bronco from the premesis and take over his coaching job since all of us know more then he does what is good for BYU. Especially since Bronco has lead BYU to 4 consecutive 10 win seasons.

I count 9 bowl games with both teams ranked in the top 25.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule/_/seasontype/3/week/16

Another interesting fact is that the big three in the MWC each are ranked higher than their opponent. The line has OSU a slight favorite over BYU. I am sure TCU is favored over BSU. As for Cal and :utard: I don't know.

OUtside of the BCS bowls, only the Capital One Bowl has two higher ranked teams than the LV Bowl.

I am actually very surprised to hear that we do not practice the full allotment before a bowl game, if that is actually what is happening...tough to determine with all the mudslinging going on....

I heard Max talk earlier before the season that they had good summer attendance at player run workouts, but not even close to 100%.

I am actually surprised at this as well. I know quite a few schools that have 100% summer attendance and whose coaches relish any extra practice time they can get with the team.

Could these be symptoms of a deeper problem that is not allowing us to achieve the ulitmate goal of a BCS game, etc., etc? What is the root of this attitude/philosophy? Coaching? Dedication?

I think Bronco is paid well enough to take any critique's or criticism's that come with the job. Happens at every program in the nation. Urban Meyer is being critiqued at Florida as we speak. And guess what--some of them just might be right. No coach is perfect.

I don't think that level of pay has anything to do with whether someone should/can accept a criticism. Do you think a bum off the street has the right to walk into whatever job you do and tell you what he/she thinks you are doing wrong and how you could improve. Frankly, BYU performed less then expectations only once last year (TCU really was that good, FSU was a debacle). I frankly think that this team overachieved what it should have done this year with the talent that is on the team (BYU's defense is very under talented this year). If Bronco can do this with the talent that he currently has, I don't think that fans like me and you have any right to question his work ethic or the work ethic on the team. If they had lost 5 or 6 games, I could stomach the criticism that I see happening with his job performance.

No, no, if you're paid lots of money, then people can say whatever the hell they want about you, it's in the Bible. It also says in the scriptures that if everyone else does it, that means it's ok.

That's right. He should already have at least 8 consecutive 10 win seasons in the last 5 years. Slacker!

My only beef with Bronco is that occasionally he does some pretty silly things (the run against UCLA to end the half in the Vegas bowl, rather than taking a knee, and the punt from the 35 yard line against :utard: this year). I will take those gaffs any day since they come with 10 win seasons--oh, and incidentally, we won both of those games. The pluses way outweigh the minuses in my mind, and I am stoked to see what he can do with even better players on defense. The future is bright.

I agree, Bronco isn't perfect (see examples above). Having said that, I don't see a reason to criticize him for his practice schedule, it seems to be working pretty good (see 10 win seasons).

No, but someone who has purchased shares in a company or products from that company has the right to tell management of that company what he/she thinks of their performance. Management is answerable to shareholders and consumers (though the average employee is not). With the high level of responsibility comes accountability.

What are fans of a sports team? If not investors or consumers in the product of sports spectating, then what are are they? Many of us invest time and money into our team. Many of us wear our fandom on our sleeves and must take the ribbing the inevitably comes when our team falls short. Many of us are alums who have paid tuition and made donations and our names are tied to our alma mater's name for better or for worse.

I heard an interesting comment by a broadcaster who was a former professional soccer player the other day. He was referencing an English team that is consistently in the top 4 of the league but has failed in recent years to bring home the hardware in terms of tournament championships. Anyway, the commentator said that a true fan would not be content with a 26-0-12 regular seasons--a true fan should be wondering why consistently strong team hasn't been able to win a championship.

The funny thing is; everyone has the right to say or have whatever opinion that he/she wants. We do live in a free country (for now). I wonder if these same fans would be more upset if that coach that couldn't get their team to a championship went somewhere else and the replacement put them in the basement of the league every year. This mind set of winning championships every year is IMO a losing mentality. It causes karma to go against you in the long run. I look at teams in every sport that continue to fire head coaches every year, and they never seem to get better. I look at teams that run good coaches thinking that they can hire better ones and watch those teams get worse. I think there is something to be said about enjoying it when you have a terriffic young coach who learns from his mistakes and gets better. BYU is still building. The talent pool had gotten really poor for a while and is being rebuilt. BYU's practice schedule is not something to complain about.
