Assuming Drew is correct (we've been mislead by 95% media guarantees before), this is fantastic news. I know he was one of the big fish we were holding space for him to make his decision. he was also one of the people who Bronco told would give a scholarship even if/when he got injured.

I love big defensive pick-ups.

Go Cougs.

"Ho-Ching, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound all-stater, said he will go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU. He turns 19 in February of 2011, but said he will not play next fall."

So he is going to take a year off of football, then take a 2-year mission, then come to BYU as a true freshman with a BLUEshirt year still available? That's kind of wierd.

Sounds like a great kid. Go Cougs!!

Can't wait to see him play in...2012...2013? Still a good get.

Hope BYU still has a football program then! (TIC)

Now go get Quezada to put the cherry on top of this great class.

Ho Ching raised our team ranking at Scout from 17 to 12.

Weird maybe but not altogether uncommon... or at least unheard of. Spencer Hafoka took three years out of high school to finally make it to Provo. I believe John Beck took that route too and I'm sure there are others that I just am forgetting right now.

I don't know if he would have had a BYU scholie any other way though. We are nearly full and more than full with LBs. By having Ho Ching grey shirt and then go on his mission in Feb. 2011, we still get a good player who likely wouldn't have contributed next year anyway, without putting a further crunch on our scholie limit or wasting a year of his eligibility. Then he could be back in time for Spring Camp in 2013 with 6-18 months to get back in shape depending on if he uses his redshirt or not, which I think he will just due to the LB depth we've recruited the last couple of years.

Now, I'm not sure whether a player has to be enrolled in Winter semester classes to participate in Spring Camp, but I recall that a mission call can be issued that puts a missionary into the MTC at 18, just so long as he turns 19 before he gets shipped out. I don't know if this rule has changed, but if not, you mix that with a mission having 30 days of leeway on their release date, he could EASILY be back for the start of classes. I personally think this is a GREAT route for him to take. Too many guys undercontribute their freshman years, and then full-on NEED the redshirt year when they get back, leaving few options for the coaches to schedule based on upcoming team needs. I like this option a lot better.

I'm pretty sure you have to be enrolled for Winter Semester in order to participate in spring ball. But supposedly Heaps doesn't finish his last high school semester until mid January but will still be here for spring ball so I imagine you could probably still get enrolled even if you missed the first couple weeks of classes.

I agree. I wish more mission-kids would take this route. It would certainly make the scholarship/recruiting job for the coaches a little easier.
