Correct Me If my B-Ball Logic is Flawed...

Also, while I'm still ranting...

an inside presence draws fouls, wears down the defense, and gets their players in foul trouble. Shooting 3' s does not.

But let's not misread dear italics.... I enjoy watching 3's, and love it when they go in. But sometimes I find myself

screaming at the screen when we shoot too many at the wrong time.

We do not have an inside presence though, Miles definitely not an inside presence, never will be. A three pointer is not a difficult shot for a D1 college player, especially hear at BYU where are players are generally known for their shooting. I promise if we force it inside to our bigs to much we would get murdered because they just simply aren't that good. Basically our strength is our guards, guards play the perimeter for the most part, so we have to play to our strengths. Maybe someday Davies will become a dominant post player, when and if that happens you will start to see the ball go inside a lot more. but for now it is almost a waste of time......

I totally agree. And Hartsock/Davies have both showed some promise inside, but neither has developed that part of their game enough to make it worth pushing on them yet. I wouldn't be surprised to see us go to the post more as we go through the year though, as Davies works more on his inside game and gets a better feel for how to handle a D1 defense.

Exactly what I was trying to say. Only better.

All this talk about shooting 3's whenever it's open makes sense to a degree. Problem is BYU can get away with playing 3-ball against soft opponents. This is why they get schooled in the tourney every year. Here's the cycle every game: Get hot from 3 early and get a big lead. Continue to chuck up 3's even thought they're not falling (Tavernari accounting for 75% of them). Late in the game our lead has shrunk and after a lot of near heart attacks, someone finally makes a 3 which gets everyone excited, blah, blah, blah.

I hate this sort of ball and I don't get why Rose encourages it (cuz he sure isn't forcing them to do anything else). If we can't develop an inside presence (yes Miles and Davies can score), then we are dead in the water yet again against the good teams we'll see this year (AZ, UNLV, Nevada, tourney).

I agree. The low post has been open. Even I could get it in there. Even if nothing happens that would be a good pass. There are new passing angles from there. It is a variation in the offense. We see too much of passing the ball around the arc. How do you expect those guys to develop their game if they never get an opportunity?

Focus on getting ready for the tourney instead of beating up the helpless teams.

Miles cant really score anywhere

If only he would realize that he is 6'11". He has to jump a whole 2 inches to dunk it, but instead, he tries to bank a shot off the backboard. :gross: At least he's improved his FT%.

I agree that we need more post production, but I don't agree that it has to come at the expense of the three. Again, we attempt threes at the same rate that the championship teams try them. Threes are not our problem.

The problem is that players take pull-up jumpshots instead of forcing the issue and either taking the ball to the hole or pushing the ball inside to our post players. The teams need to take fewer 8-foot jumpers, and the post players need to work toward the basket instead of swiveling for the fade away shots they seem to adore.

Inasmuch as your criticism is addressed at the lack post-production and attacking the rim, I agree. Where we disagree is what we need to stop doing. Our three game is fine. Our troubles are inside the arc.

The difference between the championship team's three point percentages and BYU's is that they had a post game. BYU has no post threat. And so it seemslike they shoot more three pointers because the three point attempts don't come after a post player draws a double team and kicks it out. Good defenses will exploit this, like Utah State did, and force BYU into an offense of four guys dancing around the perimeter trying to get space to launch a three.

For a team of guards, BYU is dangerous. But the core problem is no post presence, which is why I put all of the blame for any of BYU basketball's failings on Chris Miles. Incredibly, he still doesn't have a post move besides the 'turn and shoot a fadeaway because I'm 6'11 and can shoot over you.' I suppose some of the blame has to fall on the coaches as well for not teaching him. Is there any doubt that under Stew Morrill he wouldn't be a nightmare to guard averaging 17ppg?

Throwing the ball into the post to create three point shots is only really effective when the said post player demands a double team. If he doesnt then he gets the ball stands there, everyone looks at him, he realizes he has no one to pass to and he is forced to try and make some awkward post move that rarely ends in points ... I'm much much more comfortable with the ball in Jimmers hand than in Miles ...... JT on the other hand is a different story ....
