I think it is going to pay huge dividends to be patient with this class. Although there are several players who I think can make immediate impacts. Guys like Drew Phillips, Jake Heaps, Ross Apo, Alani Fua, Kyle Van Noy, Josh Quezada and Bronson Kaufusi could play and make plays for us in 2010.

Although Kaufusi is very capable of making plays in 2010, he won't. He's coming off an ACL tear and besides that he's going straight on a mission unless his plans have changed. Zach Stout, Tuni Kanuch, Collin Keoshian, Kona Shwenke, and Jamora could all make immediate impact as well.

I doubt Jamora will end up a cougar. That's why I left him off the list.

The best thing that I see in this class is the amount of speed that is coming to the defense. BYU has been lacking in the speed department but this class is going to change that.

Last year's class changed that. We haven't seen most of the effects of that yet, but we will! 8) 8)

This year's class will positively change it.

I kind of like the increase in speed, coupled with hitting, coupled with depth, that we saw at corner this year. I am really excited to see that increase within the position, and spread to other positions with next years class. The future is exciting for Cougar fans.

The great thing is that Eason and Aguirre would be more than serviceable starters. Then you have Buckner, who I'm not sure ever fully recovered from his injury and missionary legs. Bradley and Logan are an EXCELLENT tandem. And we have recruits in the pipeline to keep that skill and speed coming.

What impresses me this year is that these LBer recruits appear to be extremely quick, which was probably our primary weakness this season (in the middle). We also get some incredible DL's.

Think about how well we did with walk-ons these past few seasons. By a year or two, maybe three, we will be fielding 3- and 4-star talent across the defense. And when a walk-on or 2-star kid gets into the starting rotation, it's because they are a hidden gem or late bloomer, not because we simply have no one else.

Gentlemen, as you can tell, I'm pretty pumped about our near future in this program.

I agree completely. We all should just take a deep breath or two and see how it turns out. If anyone needs a reality check just look at what Notre Dame has done with all their 4 and 5 star players over the last 4 years. We also need to see several classes like this to build things up. I'm optimistic though...definitely a great time to be a Cougar Fan!!!!

Go Cougs!

Louisville KY

You can't compare byu and nd. byu's coaching staff have been successful with less talent. ND could never say that besides fatty's first and second year. Our coaches have been consistently good. Give them even more talent and byu will just get better and better.

Why do you doubt Jamora will come? Fill me in on what you know. I don't follow the recruiting services out there. Just know some Polys and they tell me he's a stud.

Just look at his profile. He moved BYU from "HIGH INTEREST" to "VERBAL" to "LOW INTEREST". He didn't just de-commit, he loudly and vocally de-committed, basically saying he was definitely going somewhere else.

that's weird. anyone know why? another interesting thing is that kona shwenke, who is his teammate and is rated higher on scout, commited to byu but doesn't have as big of offers as jamora.

I played football with an amazing athlete, he played tailback, he was about 5'10" but built like a rock, very strong, and fast. But I kid you not, he was so dumb, he never learned any of the plays (I'm not sure he even graduated from H.S.). After the QB called the play in the huddle, this guy would ask "where do I go?" It was kind of crazy, but in H.S. he got away with being dumb, but in college? I kind of doubt it. Maybe some of these recruits are afraid of the BYU academics? And maybe some of them DO NOT want to play with their H.S. teammate. Why did Teo go to ND? It probably gets complicated with some of these kids.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I turned down a basketball scholarship to BYU (yes, I really had one) to go to a far lesser, worldly university...and it had nothing to do with BYU (I was not a BYU fan in those distant days). Remember, many of these kids have not developed collegiate loyalties yet, they're just high school kids, and they have a wide variety of reasons for why they choose their college.

Jamora pretty much gave Bronco and BYU the middle finger. He will never play in a cougar uniform.

Jamoa is a fantastic player and a great prospect, but I suspect he began to understand that he would be competing with some pretty serious DE talent at BYU. The chances of him beating out guys like So'oto, Putnam, Mahina and Wagner in the short term, and studs like Kafusi, Schwenke, Fua, Peck, Dulan, Baker Pritchard and Brennan Scarlet (potentially) in the long term were pretty slim.

This is a good point I think too many people forget. These are kids, and they're making decisions about their future with a fraction of the information available to those of us who are now stuck in the future we've chosen.

Don't forget Troy Hinds... he'll be a beast of a DE in the future.

Considering that BYU is over it's schollie limit, it is a blessing for a kid to drop off where BYU has talent and depth coming in. Of course, if he develops into an NFL top round draft pick, I would reconsider that notion. But for now, I'd rather have the slot to offer a DB or athlete type to return kicks/punts and play the possession WR slot.
