Per Forde at ESPN, Sark turned USC down before USC offered Kiffin.

I think this is a great hire for USC. I do not like Kiffin, I think he is a scumbag, but overall, this keeps USC on top and their is no denying it. Let me tell you why.

Kiffin can recruit. He was the recruit coordinator at USC before and brought in some really big names. He recruited well at Tennessee also. Yeah, he is a bit of a schmuck, but results are results. Add to it hat he brought in Ed Oregeron to head up USC recruiting, and they have the best 1-2 recruiting punch in the country. Oregeron recruits the South better than anyone. Only reason Ole Miss is any good right now is because of Oregeron. USC will keep the west locked up and will make roads in the south now. bank on it.

Kiffin may be an average coach--time will tell--but he has Monte kiffin to coach his D. Dude is a top 3 defensive guru in the country, college or pro. He is the mastermind on the cover 2 Tampa D, and that will play really well with the talent USC gets. If USC plays D, they win the PAC10 because their O talent will be good enough. This year, the USC D was average at best. Next year, I bet they get loads better.

Norm Chow. If Norm goes to USC, Kiffin will have an All Star staff. Best i nthe nation, hands down. Even if Norm does not go to USC, Kiffin showed enough as the O coordinator at USc to win. USC will get the best QBs, best RBs and best WRs--like they have the last 5-7 years. Offense is not a problem at USC, unless you play a true freshman QB.

I am no USC fan. I repsect their talent, find them enjoyable to watch because they are like an NFL team talent-wise playing CFB. I also like seeing a western team beat the SEC, and USC routinely does when they play. I see no reason why Kiffin will not keep them on top, in spite of how unsavory he is. He showed he can recruit at Tennessee. He will recruit even better at USC. USC stays at the top. Good hire.

After they get put on probation I see the next few recruiting classes dropping significantly.

Something tells me times have passed Norm by. What has he done in the last 5 years that's worth noting? With USC's talent, who couldn't coach them to 9-10 wins? I just think Norm's magic is fading fast.

What ever happened to honoring a contract and living up to your word. Not to mention hiring a guy on his merit. What was his record in Oakland? How did he do in Tennessee? What made him worthy of such a lofty position?

He is so disingenuous and insincere. When times are tough, and a better job comes up, Lane will bolt. I'll put money down that after two difficult seasons at USC(because of sanctions, lost recruits, underclassmen leaving early) he'll take the Buffalo job.

Realities in life are often based upon perceptions, not the reality itself. Just like simple economics. The perception is that Kiffin is a big name, can recruit, is a big shot caoch. His record may say otherwise. Of course, look at Pete Carroll's record pre-USC.

If anyone thinks USC is about to drop off, I think you are mistaken. That machine is going to roll along with this hiring, like it or not. Expect all the USC commits to stay, and for Kiffin to add more top recruits in the next few days. Foolish to think otherwise.

Let me tell you why it won't work....

There's a comment at the bottom of the article that makes sooo much sense.

I can't believe Mike Garrett hired someone with Lane's rep while staring down the barrel of NCAA probation. Most schools would hire someone that is a complete straight shooter. Someone to run the program while on probation that won't get them in trouble. Kiffin and Coach O will get them on repeat offenders status within a year. If I'm the NCAA I'm sitting there shaking my head thinking Garrett truly doesn't get it. Any hope for leniency just went out the window. Good luck to both schools but Garrett just sealed his fate

The NCAA followed Kelvin Sampson from Oklahoma to Indiana and helped burn that hoops program to the ground for what Sampson had done at Oklahoma.

You can bet your ass that the NCAA is going to be all over Kiffin and Orgeron for what they've done in Tennessee.... throw in the USC stuff (and the fact that Pete Carroll is untouchable now) and I can see a scenario where the NCAA will quite unforgiving February 19th when they dole out the punishment for the past. Kiffin picked the wrong organization to thumb his nose at.

The latest I read izzzz: Norm Chow has not yet agreed to return to USC. This coming year he will earn $690,000 @ UCLA - with a $250,000 bonus on April 1, 2010.

Norm's people are saying - "it will take NFL type money to bring Norm back to USC." to me - that means a $1,000,000 per year contract to budge the big man.

Stay tuned. As for Kiffin ..... Lordy - Lordy!!!!! Who'd a thunk it!

:D :D 8)

Is Norm Chow really so great these days? He's been to UCLA for, what, three years now? I have not seen anything from that school offensively or in QB play that would suggest an OC doing great things....

You can bet your ass that USC is going to walk away from all of this virtually unscathed. Big schools in football do not get touched. Maybe double secret probation. Maybe lose 5 scholarships for 2 years. That will be it. Alabama deserved a death penalty years back--so did Florida. Maybe even Miami which skated and were as dirty as it gets back in the late 80's and early 90's. None got it, and the issues were WAY worse than Reggie Bush. It was booster issues, which the NCAA looks at more harshly, than kids being stupid and selfish. And after the SMU debacle, the NCAA is loathe to put harsh restrictions in place.

USC will be fine because they will say it was just 1 player, not an institutional issue. wait and see.

No matter how good that perceived dream team of coaches is, the face of the program is going to be Lane Kiffin....

What Kiffin and his staff did to Tennessee on the way out, will not be taken lightly either. There are already a dozen UT recruits chipring about what Kiffin and Orgeron said to them about coming to USC, etc. This isn't uncommon, but what's uncommon is how the recruits are reacting.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=4821151

I'm not expecting the death penalty, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a 1 yr post season bowl ban, a significant reduction in off campus recruiting hours allotted, and a nearly dozen scholarships lost for 2 years.

Remember it's not football on trial, it's USC. The NCAA has combined football and hoops into their investigation; and while they may be lenient, USC just hired public enemy #1 to run their football program.

It would be like Obama making Bernie Madoff the new secretary of the treasury...

I expect USC hoops to get hit harder. The football issue was vastly different. In hoops, you can tie it back to HC Floyd. In football, you can not tie it to any coach or booster. It was Reggie, his family and a wannabe agent. The NCAA goes after booster issues much harder. saying that a university needs to be aware of hte living situation of every team member, when those parents are not affiliated with the university other than having a son play there, is a joke. But when a coach gives the benefits, or is tied to the person doing it, whole other situation. And this McKnight thing is a blip too. The car was not tied to a booster at all. So again, minor. USC skates reltively free in football, but will get hammered in hoops.

1- I think Sark "turned down" USC without USC ever even offering him.

2- Norm Chow seems past his prime, perhaps by a long shot. What was his last great team- Reggie Bush in the pay-for-play days?

Presumably the combined investigations would be into whether the USC athletic department lacks institutional control. That these were not isolated incidents of rouge players, but that the USC athletic program turns a willful blind-eye and at least passively permits the access and violations. If they go this direction, then the punishment will be on the department not individual teams persay. The big 2 will both get hammered (if they find that the hammer is appropriate)

Bringing in Kiffin and his 1 year of armed robbers, felons, recruiting violations, classless remarks towards others and you can see why the NCAA has a bone to pick that's only exacerbated by the new coach and revelations of the contact that they made with Tennessee players/recruits on the way out.

I think Norm saw the writing on the wall at UCLA and chose job security at a place that he's now considered a legend.

I'm starting to think that Norm must have murdered someone or ate a baby, because the dude simply can't get a big time head coaching job in spite of his legendary image. Someone's got dirt on Norm. (I'm joking here, I have no idea how or why he's never gotten a HC job)

UCLA has been bad for 2 reasons while Norm was there: Injuries to the best RB o nteh team nearly every year, and not 1 good QB to work with in 3 years. And years 1&2 were dreadful bad. Last year, they showed improvement. So I do not think Chow lost it as much as it was UCLA having almost no talent on O.
