Dave Rose had a shot at joining the top-10 active coaches in win totals at some point late this season.

He'll now have to wait until 2020 because Nick Emery had an insatiable hankering for a butter beer...

Nick Emery is some sort of wizard - making 47 wins magically disappear!

My bet is that Emery taking the year off so that he was outside NCAA jurisdiction for most of the investigation, and then BYU welcoming him back had a lot to do with the severity of this punishment.

If BYU would have suspended him for that year and kept him in school during the investigation or even just kicked him off the team and not allowed him back, I think the NCAA treats this much differently. Instead, BYU and Emery tried to get cute.

Yep.

Did you guys read NE's Instagram post yesterday and just not believe a word he said? Hmmm.

I read it yesterday and thought that it was very self serving. Now I’m very suspicious of the timing. Welcome to the Nick Emery pitty party. We feel so bad that you sold out the program for a pittance. Go drown your sorrow with a Snickers.

The NCAA listed 36 cases where the team gave up wins involving ineligible players. BYU gave one counter-example. Looks like the vacated wins will stick.

BYU has known since July, btw.

4 boosters, 2 years, over $12,000. Including an envelope with hundreds in cash left in Emery's locker. That's bad.

LP3 are the worst recruits in recent BYU history.

And it's Nick Emery! A guy that had no hope playing in the NBA. Pretty much made the team worse because of his selfish play. We didn't even go to the tournament!

If Nick was a Chris Weber, I might get the temptation by a booster to throw cash at him, but it's Nick Emery!

I don't know how Rose can even look at Emery.

This is the same guy that punched someone on the court. Why is Emery still on the team?

The worst part, Emery is going to show up and try to "prove" himself and makeup for his idiocy. He'll go back to chucking 3s at midcourt 2 seconds into the shot clock. If Emery has to be on the team. Park him at the end of the bench. He doesn't deserve the uniform.

And yes, LP3 has been the worst thing for BYU.

Rose should be let go at the end of the next season. Bring in a new coach to establish a new reputation.

Would it make any difference to the NCAA if Emery were suspended? Has the NCAA ever handed out a penalty this severe? I would like to know what the General Authorities are thinking of this.

For myself, I was hoping the basketball season would make up for the mess with football. Oh well.

When this all started to come out and Nick got caught with his pants down and everyone was trying to spin it to be no big deal I wondered if it was part of the reason why Eric Mika left early so he wouldn't get caught up in anything, whether he took benefits or not.

The NCAA report also dispels the justification going around that the boosters were just doing this to help him get over his divorce.

The biggest ticket items (trip to NYC, broadway shows, trip to Germany) all were Nick + wife going on vacations together pre-divorce.

Is Haws and the entire LP3 involved?!

But maybe they were to help with the marital problems that they were having at the time? See, it was justified!

Innocent until proven guilty? Guilty by association? Innocent until caught?

You're only presumed innocent until proven guilty when it comes to what the government can do to you.

I don't need to hold a full-blown trial and a vote by other citizens before I come to my own imperfect conclusions.

I wonder if with the LP3 praise came a sense of entitlement and exceptionalism.

I don't see any reason to smear Mika and Hawes with the same tar brush; there's no evidence they participated. But they probably did know, and that probably did have an influencing factor in Mika bailing on what was supposed to be a dynasty. Still, taken on net, the LP3 have been a big disappointment.

If Nick had never rejoined the team, would the NCAA still have come down this hard?

I'm upset that this affected more people than just himself. I'm all for repentance--Lord knows I need it myself--but it seems the NCAA is over-extending by making others suffer such a severe penalty.

At some level this kind of feels like 2000 all over again.

That ended with a new AD, new BB coach and new FB coach. The way things are going, that may be where we're headed. I doubt Holmoe's been getting much sleep recently.

It's all conjuncture, but you look at the LP3 and I see some big egos. Mika was a ball hog. Ball went into the post and it didn't come out.

Emery, a ball hog. He got his hands on it and most the time he was shooting it, typically early in the shot clock.

Haws, forces shots all the time. He gets the ball and he's immediately trying to score. The game against Nevada really showcased that.

In short, from my perspective we had some players with a lot of hype around them. It went to their heads.

In highschool they played team ball and beat up on teams. Each had their own agenda and those agendas manifested.

All this shows me is Rose has lost all ability to control a team and establish a team- first mentality. Rose did more with "less" talent because those teams bought into tough defense and team ball.

Personally, I think it's best for the program that BYU not renew Rose's contract next season. Unless he can get it together and go on a run this season and next, I don't see the program headed in the right direction.
