When they come to the MC I'm going to dress up as a zombie aztec (since they are all dead) and rip out the heart of a sacrifice...we'll see if anyone gets offended then.

Well, good luck with that. I'm sure BYU and the Marriott Center won't have any problem with it. Especially once you say, "Well, they would have let me at San Diego State!" I'm sure this is where BYU and the Marriott Center will say something to effect that you're at San Diego State, that you're at BYU and we try to welcome our guests and show them respect.

What opppsing fans do says much more about them than the team or achool they are trying to make fun of. Stanford's band's mocking of our temple rites several years ago is far worse in my mind than some moronic students dressing as missionaries because they ARE the school. U of A's fans' diatribe was again far worse than SDSU because it was far more venemous and joined by far more people. I actually give credit to the achool because the President was actually man enough to confess error. So where was SI or ESPN when sacred matters WERE being mocked? In the end I won't lose any sleep over it and am glad don't need to mock others to win. As far as I am concerned 22'000 SCREAMING CHEERING fans is far more intimidating than some stupid antic

I booed the Stanford Band back with thier Ken Jennings routine, and thought that they were out of bounds with their portrayal of the many wifes. I thought that that routine was way way out of bounds. I don't know how I would react today, but I suspect that I would react the same way. Hawk, the "Your still Mormon" chant I would probably laugh off as stupid, but I guess I would have to be there to see. In short we all seem to agree that there is a line; it just appears that we disagree as to exactly where the line is.

I agree with you, ABYUFAN, I don't really find the missionary thing as out of bounds, but I think we can all agree that there is a double standard.

Maybe someone should take that Mountain West sportsmanship commercial they always play and splice in all the footage of SDSU and other MWC teams showing poor sportsmanship against BYU. Then we can end the commercial with a giant asterisk next to the Good Sportsmanship logo.

Just for fun, what would everyone think if the BYU student section showed up in white shirts and ties for the SDSU game?

Not only would it look great, I think it would be hilarious and defuse the situation. If BYU fans are dressing up as Mormon missionaries, would anyone else copy it? Then again, those other fans might start dressing up in far more disrespectful outfits. Maybe we should just be glad that missionary attire is the best they could come up with. That's not really crossing the line for me.

Now THAT would be an interesting white out!

I actually thought of that too, which is why I guess I wasn't that offended when SDSU fans did it. One result would be we would never again see other opposing fans dressed up that way since they'd see BYU fans also enjoy that. On the other hand, it really does make light of the missionary identity and somehow lessens their respectful calling and image.

For about the fourth or fifth time, today I recieved the forwarded email about the BYU air force pre game video. I think it's awesome that we are getting good pub from that. I am proud to be an Alum of the school known for that rather than anything else.

My vote (for what it's worth) is let the SDSU students have their joke. Ultimately we get the last laugh. And I'm not too big to admit that it is easier to take the high road when you happen to own that team.

I tried to find reference to the Stanford band event you referred to, and found this article:

http://www.dailycal.org/article/22476/sometimes_controversial_always_witty_stanford_band

...which mentions that they did something about as offensive to Catholics at a Notre Dame game. So at least they were equal-opportunity offenders.

IIRC, the Stanford band was actually banned from performing at ND again. I was at the Stanford game in 2004 and don't remember them mocking our temple rites. But they did mock Ken Jennings and your typical polygamy jokes. It was in poor taste. School was not yet in session and I dare say there may have been more BYU fans at the game. The band was roundly booed during and following their performance.

Before the AIr Force game, BYU played a video on the video board (you can find it here - called Air Force Tribute Video) http://www.byucougars.com/videos.jsp

essentially telling the fans to cheer the Cadets while they are coming on to the field, because the Cadets may be our "foe" for the next 60 minutes of game time, but in the comming years, they will be our defense, and without the Air Force, there would be no football.

Can someone tell me where the ACLU is on this? Even though I am not offended, why is this any different from similar events and the principle of it?

Because the ACLU is a bunch of leftist nutjobs who are only interested in furthering the "progressive" agenda, much like the NAACP.

"Cougarboard.com posted an e-mail Tuesday, purportedly from Don Oberhelman, SDSU associate athletics director. In response to a BYU fan's complaint, the note said, in part, "As an employee of a public university, I'm sure you understand the student's rights of free speech and freedom of expression. I don't approve of, or condone their attire, but their costumes are a regular occurrence based on who we are playing. 98% of what they do at our games makes for a fantastic basketball atmosphere, the 2% like this makes me cringe.""
