I have a rotation of a few different BYU basketball shorts that I play in. I'd certainly buy some of those white/blue/pink shorts to add to the rotation, but from what I can tell, those will not be marketed, other than a potential auction.

What's strange, and I'm being serious but I used to think that the whole pink thing belonged to breast cancer in particular. I guess I must of missed something...

It did. When I flew to Florida in October, the flight attendants all had something pink on and were selling pink lemonade. They broadcast it that they were doing it for national breast cancer awareness week or month (I don't remember which).

As it was mentioned in one of the articles on this topic locally, Rose has been participating in this cause since he was at Dixie, but in the past, it was only the coaches who demonstrated their support as they wore tennis shoes with their suits for that weekend. There was nothing pink about it, but somehow this has picked up the pink aspect of the breast cancer movement. I don't know the connection and being that they are talking all cancers in general, I'm not certain that pink was what they had to go with, but someone apparently decided to go in that direction.

A funny side note:

My wife can't seem to get the fully term straight, "Breast Cancer Awareness" and she usually ends up saying, "Breast Awareness" when talking about these things. For some reason it always makes me smile. :) I have to remind her that "Breast Cancer Awareness" is limited to once a year, but "Breast Awareness" is the rest of the time. For some reason she usually hits me in the arm at this point in the conversation.

I don't have any specific knowledge on this subject, just some thoughts. The most recognizable symbol for cancer awareness is pink for breast cancer (for obvious reasons). It has permeated our culture to the point that it is directly associated with breast cancer support. It has brought people out of the woodwork for health screenings, research, donations and other support. Advocates for fighting other types of cancer have noticed the success it has brought, and wanted an equally recognizable symbol, but what color do you use for colo-rectal cancer or for lung cancer, and how many colors can be incorporated and still be usefull symbols?

Sinse no one has come up with an equally successful symbol, and sinse breast cancer doesn't own "pink," perhaps someone, or some group decided to latch on, or perhaps it just evolved that people started to associate pink with general cancer support. If it works to increase cancer awareness, why not use it?

Cancer awareness is very important, because awareness spurs action, and action brings results. This kind of campain is many times more effective than donating what it costs to cancer research, and putting it on the uniforms is equally more effective than making announcements or wearing arm bands. It is also equally more effective to put it on the mens' unies than to put it on the womens' unies, because of the attention that it brings. I don't think that it is gross at all. I think that this will be a very good thing that will bring much positive attention to the team and to the university.

My best to the team, and to the cause that they will support. CO COUGS!!!

PS. There were a bunch of guys that ran in last years run for the cure in SLC who wore pink tee shirts with the logo "big or small, we'll save 'em all." I loved it! :) :) :)

Major tangent, but our kids have a "good touch, bad touch" program each year at school. my wife (also a begrudging fan of "breast awareness" ;) ) can't get the program name right and commonly refers to it as "don't touch, don't tell" .
