Loss on Rose...and Jimmer

Great game in the Pit, but personally I think we gave them the game. Here's why:

1 - No inside game. We're completely void of an inside presence. This hurts at both ends of the court. It hampers us with getting points and it limits us in getting defensive boards. We routinely only have one guy rebounding in the midst of three opponents both offensively and defensively. Bad odds. Without an inside game we may get past the 1st or 2nd round of the NCAA tourney depending on our seed, but it will come to a screeching halt after that. Rose needs to establish and inside game and he needs to do it ASAP. All it will take is 1 hour of watching BYU tape to realize to beat us all you have to do is pound it inside and drive to the hole possession after possession after possession. Our bigs will either foul out or be left spinning on their heels.

2 - I love Jimmer. He brings to the court what we've desperately been lacking, a dominant point guard. That said, he needs to work the ball around more. Sure he put up 27 points tonight, but he went 8/20 from field goal range in the process. He took 20 shots and missed 12 of them. Given the way we rebound, that's basically 12 turnovers. The game can't rely on him. I love his tenacity and competitiveness and don't want any of that to let up, but he's got to play smarter and work the ball around. We can't be at Jimmer's mercy. He had some great passes, don't get me wrong, but for every great past there were two forced shots.

He also got too tired. He is not 100% yet, and we needed one or both of the juniors to rest him, and to provide some quickness to help stop Gary.

His defense is generally average at best even when 100%. Good point.

I agree. I think if Loyd or Morgan come in simply to stop Gary, the outcome of that game is completely different. Jimmer was GASSED at the end of that one. He needs more minutes on the bench so as to be more productive when he is on the floor.

i give props to the team for doing well under the pressure and atmoshpere there in new mexico. however they should have won.

jimmer was forcing too much crap. wasn't letting the plays develop and using the guys around him as well as he often does. also they looked like they weren't even trying on defense on a number of possession. it was like they were tired or didn't want it that much.

I still don't want to be too negative. they played well, almost had it and then kind of blew it at the end. you win some and you lose some.

i expect us to beat them handidly in provo. can't wait for this saturday. we are going to kill the utes.

when it comes to BYU basketball it is enough for me to just have a legitimate player. We have a star on the floor. An Allen Iverson type player who is selfish and causes offensive disfunction. People in Philly complained about Iverson's lack of passing and lack of running the offense and lack of everything until they lost him. Then they wanted him back. To be fair, the inbound pass to the low post should come from the wing and I saw Emery and JT pass up on those opportunities the whole game. I don't think Jimmer can be to blame for that at all. I like Jimmer's killer instinct especially on that long three from the middle with 2 seconds on the shot clock and a 6'10" guy running at him....

I don't think we need to establish an inside game. Just look at the Cleveland Cavs. LeBron kills an offenses rythm faster than any player in the NBA and yet they win. There is no doubt that when one of these outside shots go up or when Jimmer launches a crazy shot that everyone needs to crash the boards better.

Our offense was very stagnat last night. Guys weren't moving as well without the ball. Of course, it would have helped if some of our other perimeter players (read as Emery and Haws) had made a few more of their open shots.

Why do our guards consistently our rebound our big guys? not just this game, but nearly every game? That's a weakness that must change, the bigs have to step up and carry their own weight. I couldn't watch the game, but the stat sheet says our guards did the rebounding, which is great from the guard line, but awful from the front line guys.

Extremely perplexing. I noticed during last nights game and against SDSU our bigs were rarely down low in position to get a board. It looks like they were trying to spread the floor to clear the middle for drives to the basket. Only rationale I can come up with.

Post player rebounds (post players are our 4s[Noah/JT] and 5s [Davies/Miles/Anderson])

Against AF 19 of 38 by the post.

Against CSU 11 of 36 by the post.

Against WYO 11 of 40 by the post.

Against SDSU 16 of 35 were by the post.

Against UNM 18 of 41 by the post.

It does look like our post struggles to rebound. It's been one of my biggest criticisms of Miles. Some have suggested his role is to box out and free up rebounds for others. I don't agree. A 6'11" player should average more than 3.6 boards regardless of their role.

This loss was clearly on the shoulders of emery and haws. The only reason jimmer took so many shots is becase he had no confidence in any other players to hit a shot. The bigs played a horrbile game also. This would have been a huge road win but nobody on the floor except for jimmer played like they should have.

How about Tavernari? He kept us in the game in the first half and played a solid game.

Sorry I'm late to the party, guys, I was away from the net after the game. I don't disagree with much everybody's saying regarding the loss, however I noticed one thing I can't pass up mentioning. Sure the refs are bad. All MWC refs are. Once in a blue moon they're even bad in our favor, so I'm not gonna blame the refs for the loss. But literally, LITERALLY, I have never seen a MWC game in which BYU is down with under a minute, on defense and playing for the shot and rebound, and the ref doesn't blow the whistle on the tick-tackiest incidental contact with 5 seconds on the shot clock, FORTY FEET FROM THE BASKET. Maybe Tav fouled him, maybe not, but as soon as that whistle was blown, the game was officially over. That's the kind of 'maybe' whistle that takes the game away from the players, and it happens EVERY TIME! It's like the ref's announcing they're just gonna rip 30 seconds off the clock, and hand the other team freethrows, because then there's no choice but to foul. Irritating.

Not so sure about Haws. He had 7 points, which basically all came with in the first 5 - 10 min of the game. In the 2nd half I think he only took 2 - 3 shots. He went 3 for 8 and shot 37.5 percent; whereas Jimmer went 8 for 20 and shot 40 percent. Percentage wise Haws and Jimmer played rather comparably. Only substantial difference, Jimmer took 2.5 times as many shots as Haws.

Jimmer may have had little confidence in his teammates, but it wasn't justified. They were shooting as well (or as poorly) as him.

New Mexico is hard to beat as is, but the referees responding to the home crowd made it that much harder. The defense couldn't be aggressive because our bigs were getting whistled VERY quicky. The Lobos' Gary was getting Michael Jordan treatment. He shot more free throws than any UNM player since 2004. And it was the opposite when we were on offense. Jimmer was getting fouled twice as badly as those called for Gary and the refs swallowed their whistles, all game long. Even ever-classy Coach Rose shook one of the refs hands after the game and sarcastically told the referee "Good win"!
