A breakdown for Italics:

Being down on the team after losing a big game=Understandable but shortsighted

Being Constantly Pessimistic=Not my favorite posters but well-within their Hawkwing-given rights

Using every bad performance to support your long-standing vendetta against individuals on the team=Rustyshacklefordism, pure and simple.

  I love it!

Agree with everything you said.

I think it would hurt them if they had lost to a sub par team! But this is not a sub par team they may end the season with 20 + wins! I know it is a team goal it has been for years but you cant throw out all the other wins all year just cause you don't get 1 in the tourney! I am suprised by how many people thought we would only lose 1 game in the conference this year! There has been alot of great teams in this conference the last few years who could not do it. We could still drop 1 more. When this is all said and done if we end up with 5-7 seed I think we can win in the tourney!

I know I'm overreacting right now. Sorry

That said I was VERY disappointed in the way BYU came out. I also was shocked with out UNLV came out. They really couldn't repeat that performance if you gave them 10 games to try. UNLV of course is a good team, but I expected more energy out of BYU today. Especially because BYU knew exactly what to expect coming into that game. That's all I'm drivin at.

It wasn't the way BYU came out the killed us. It was the way UNLV game out.

That said, I'm going to chalk this loss up to UNLV playing great. I don't think BYU is as bad as they looked today nor is UNLV as good as they looked today. UNLV was shooting .313 from behind the arc before today. They were 12-23 (.522) today but started 9 of 11 (.818).

Seriously, are you kidding me!? 9 of 11. That's unrepeatable. Now watch UNLV go a combined 4 of 37 against New Mexico and San Diego St and lose both games.

they do like beating up on our boys in blue, and would probably do that[lose to SDSU and UNM]just to spite us. :P :P

I still contend it was a combo of the two. UNLV was on fire, but BYU looked lost and confused which only adds confidence to UNLV's shooting.

Completely agree.

Yeah, a poor start by BYU was made to look even worse by the torrid start by the Rebels. Props to the Rebels, they know how to game plan for us. Now if only they could figure how to play against the rest of the league, they'd be a great team.

I got all sorts of rebuttals this season when I talked about how:

- I wasn't seeing anything that would lead me to believe BYU will win a tourney game this year

have a little faith.

- Our inside game was absolutely pathetic and would cost us games

Miles/Anderson/Davies = EPIC FAIL!

- Emery's 3-pt shooting was a fluke, and he cannot perform against teams that are good

Emery still has a bruised heel, that is not fully healed, lighten up, he will get his shot back.

- JT is more of a liability than a star

And this is news ?

And lo and behold, this is what we're seeing now.

Listen, you can all call me crazy, but I'm going to make a short and true statement: Emery is NOT a good shooter.Really... he isn't. Getting wide open looks and hitting a good number of them against awful teams does not make you a good shooter. Shooting horrribly, having a horrible shot selection, and being completely out-muscled against every good team you player, however, makes you a bad shooter. Emery is a bad shooter. Sure, I'm sure he can light them up if he goes to a playground and shoots around, but when it comes to GAME time, this kid is not someone you want taking long jump shots. Period.

YES HE HIS, he normally takes JUMP shots, and with a bruised heel, it throws his shot off.

Our inside game is awful. Not below average, not bad, but probably one of the worst in the country. I've seen plenty of bottom tier basketball teams play on tv, and I'm telling you, their big guys at least know how to:

- Finish strong

- Be aggressive

- Box out

- Get a quick layup/dunk when they are dished to and have an open look

- etc.

Those 3 kill us.

Miles cannot even deal with the basic fundamentals of basketball. I'd grade him a D- as a center. Jimmer gets him great looks, and he just freezes up. His movement is so robotic and "deer in headlights"-like that it makes me nauseous to watch him. Hartsock may be the only player on the team who has a good idea at what the role of a big man is, and what a big man's play ought to look like.

Truth.

JT just doesn't help. He plays the 4 position. I don't care how well he can sometimes shoot, or how many defensive boards he may get time to time... he doesn't play his position. You could have a team of 5 excellent point guards, and that team would get absolutely nowhere. A basketball team needs a 1, 2, 3, 4, and a 5 position. JT is a 4... and does next to nothing that would resemble what his job is.

BYU has no cutters. Just a bunch of guys (besides maybe Jimmer and Hartsock) who can hit open shots against mediocre teams. Even Haws doesn't seem to know how to take it to the hoop. He gets plenty of great lanes and opportunity's, but he always instead decides to do that annoying pull up jump shot - one that just doesn't work against physical teams.

So go ahead, tell me that I'm freaking out over one loss, being too pessimistic, etc...

I'm not saying we aren't a good team. We are just extremely far from elite, and I honestly do NOT see us getting a tourney win this year. We will get a fast, physical, big team who knows how to execute their positions, and players like Emery, MIles, and others will completely flop. 1 or 2 players can't do it all for us. We need a team of players who know their job. Instead, we consistently have 5 guys on the court who want to all play the exact same position.

No. If you can ignore 22 other games and pin your hat on one, I reserve the right to ignore one game and pin my hat on 22 others.

Yeah, Emery's 3-point shooting was a fluke for 22 games, etc. etc. Tell you what, I'm going to wake up tomorrow, the sun will come up over the mountains, the Cougs will win the rest of their conference games, we'll get a nice, high seed in the tourney, and I'll rub your face in it when we win AT LEAST one tourney game, and no amount of "I've never been so happy to be wrong" pathetic BS will save you from the gloating and nose-rubbing that I will bring to the forums when we win.

As Randy Jackson would say..."One million percent YES!!!" Way to say it like it is. Besides Jimmer, we have no one on our team who is a what you would call a "Baller." I'm talking about someone who is really comfortable with the ball, who moves with a nice rythm and who's game sort of suits your eye. All of them are quirky little players. JT has no concept of a good shot and when and how that shot is supposed to happen naturally. Miles is just uncomfortable to look at period, kid doesn't know what to do. You hit the nail on the head with Emery. Emery's was good in high school because of athleticism but at the college level you actually have to have good offensive skills to start. Emery would be a great player off the bench for a good college team to try and shut someone down. Kid can't make free throws for crying out loud....

We play well at neutral sites so we have that going for us come tourney time. I have kept my hopes low all season because to me it's just the same pattern every year. We have a great record and this is a really good team. However, this team has zero post presence on O or D. The guards can't stop penetration and there is, comically, no shot-blocking at all to help them out. If you want to look at our record and make a judgment based on that, that's fine. But I submit that Jimmer is the only reason we don't have 6-7 losses right now. I think we'll win out and get a 5 or 6 seed still, but this team has a lot of holes that have been exposed by every top tier team we've played this season. I wish it weren't true, but the players just aren't there to make a run.

Beating up on the AFA's, CSU's, and TCU's of the world doesn't mean jack when we play the way we did against UNM and UNLV. Outside the Marriott center, BYU tends to play this way against solid opponents. If we get another physical team that has good bigs... Lord help us.

I agree with what I've seen many posters say (here or elsewhere): Whether or not BYU gets past the first round this year is going to come down to one thing, and one thing only: Who we are matched up against.

Again, this is all fairly ridiculous.

I just can't help but think that most people on here don't watch enough college basketball.

As a matter of fact, anyone who watches even a remote amount of hoops, outside of BYU, would know that a 14 pt. loss to UNLV on the road is not a bad loss, does not mean that our team is not "elite", and CERTAINLY does not mean that we won't win a tournament game.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Bingo! A pot stirring post title.

I'm jumping on this and sno's bandwagon. I'm getting really irritated with our " fans" acting a whole lot more like trolls.

Ummm...against UNM we lost by 4 to a team who is currently ranked #15 in one of the toughest arenas in the country. Could we have played better? Sure, but citing that as a bad loss or as the team playing "poorly" is quite the stretch. Then UNLV comes out and hits more threes in the first ten minutes than they have hit in a game all year, sure we got our butts beat, but we probably learned a lot about ourselves and it should light a fire under our butts, plus we play historically bad at that one venue, and we won't be playing there come tourney time. The sky is not falling.

Did BYU have a bad game? Yes. Do I agree with your assessment of BYU? No

BYU has very solid players. That includes JT, Emery, and Miles. I find it hard to believe that people are questioning those 3 as legit D-1 bball athletes. What I'm mad about is that yesterday BYU (as a whole) looked nothing like a team that deserves to be in the top 15. When they are playing together and everyone is doing their job, they could beat anyone out there. Even with "Miles, Emery and JT". Everything that makes BYU basketball great was left in Provo for this trip.

Questioning Emery? Give me a break.

I don't get it why people think we played bad. I mean we outscored them by 15 in the second half. Yesterday UNLV would of beaten anybody just because they were having and "OFF" game. Our defense was somewhat suspect to begin with but they were hitting every shot they threw up be it contested or uncontested. I chalk it up to luck on UNLV's side. Let us play them again in Vegas and I guarantee they wont shoot lights out in the first half again. We do need to find some more scoring though. I think Haws or Hartsock really needs to try and step it up in that aspect. Emery's been off for like 5 or 6 games so I think whatever you get from him is icing on the cake from now on

the real problem is that BYU's intensity showed up 10 minutes too late. Had it got there on time, BYU would have been right there for the W.

And this is what I don't get. Why is it that EVERY opponent BYU beats is automatically discounted? Like they didn't want to play and just gave the game to BYU. Sorry, Italics, I don't have an argument that counter your logic of "I-don't-credit-any-team-we-beat-so-we-haven't-beat-anyone-and-we-only-lose-big-games-because-only-the-games-we-lose-I-consider-big-games-because-teams-just-hand-us-wins" mentality.

And we didn't get beat by a team "that has good bigs" yesterday. But you are correct in that we need a favorable matchup in the NCAAs - but then, so does every other team.

One thing I love about this team is that we finally have a perimeter player who wants the ball and has the game to command the ball. Jimmer is a killer competitor who has the drive to succeed. What BYU needs is a post player with that similar drive. If there is one player in the last 15-20 years who I think has that mentality in the post it would be Mekeli Wesley. BYU would be a very dangerous team is Wesley were on this team. Because then you would have two guys with the competitiveness needed to succeed at the highest levels of college ball.
