They've been second in the west for as long as I can remember, behind Washington. It has a lot to do with stadium size though. Now all we have to do is sell out every weekend for a year and our overall status will move way up.

This isn't a realistic comparison, it would be more realistic if they went off of % of stadium capacity and number of sellouts. People can pretend all they want but if Utahs stadium held 70,000 it would probably sell out every weekend. For all those who don't believe it go ahead and drive down on game day and check out how many people are sitting in the tailgate lot tailgating with no ticket.

This is about as realistic comparison as you can get. If Utah keeps selling out their stadium will eventually be expanded until they can accommodate a competitive number of fans. BYU didn’t always have the capacity they do. It was driven by demand. And recent numbers prove the demand is pretty much still there, which is very impressive.

I read this argument before and I simply do not believe it. According to the Utah football page the average price of a football ticket is 70.00. Their current stadium capacity is 45,000. If they add 20,000 seats to the stadium the ticket revenue alone is 1,400,000. per game. A six game season increases the ticket revenue to 8,400,000 per season. That doesn't include concessions or merchandise. So either the powers that be don't believe that they could fill those extra seats, or they are criminally bad at math. I would love to hear which one it is.

If we sold out every game, we would have moved from #22 nationally ALL THE WAY UP to #21 nationally.

Utah has sold out many games, but their actual attendance is usually thousands less than capacity. Especially this last year where there were regularly thousands of empty seats.

I'm not sure where in Rice-Eccles would be a natural area to expand. The south end zone where the team lockers and the band is? They may be approaching where significant amounts of money may be required to expand as their olympic upgrades about 20 years ago already filled sections.

BYU's stadium is just right as they can sell out when a big game comes in but they don't have huge empty sections for most things (except in bad weather against an FCS opponent or something). It was nice to have attendance rebound somewhat this year from the last few seasons of being down.

Well, BYU does pretty well compared to USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, California, and San Diego State...you know, teams that play in stadiums with similar capacity to, or higher capacity than, LES.

Compare also to: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, West Virginia, Purdue, Illinois, NC State, North Carolina, Missouri, Pitt, Louisville, Memphis, South Florida, and Temple...who also play in stadiums with similar or higher capacity.

Wow people are completely missing the point. I'm not saying byu doesn't do a good job with attendance. I don't think saying BYU had the 2nd highest ranked attendance in the west is something to beat our chest too. My point was simply that if you took actual attendance number not tickets sold and number of people through the gates sellouts, that would be a more realistic number of who had the better attendance. If a team like Utah sold out ever game and BYU only filled 75% of LES every game they would still have a higher attendance rating then Utah. But Utah sold out Rice Paddy Stadium wouldn't that mean they statistically had the better attendance. And for those that talk about Utah having empty seat, seriously there was empty seats against USC in the upper corners at LES.

So increasing our attendance by 6000 people per game would only move us up 1 slot? Interesting. I thought it would be more.

BYU's listed capacity is 63,470. We rank 28th in percent of capacity filled at 93.82%. Just behind Navy at 94.03%.
