The case for Heaps

Look, there is no point to starting Heaps against UW if he is not clearly the best option come September. He's going to be great for us no matter when he starts to contribute (which won't be long I assure you). But starting him if he's not clearly the best only does damage. It proves Bronco is not consistent in his approach to how players earn playing time, could divide the rest of the team, and puts added pressure on Heaps when he'd already have enough pressure to prove something against UW. As a matter of fact, I would almost prefer it if Jake doesn't start until the Nevada game even if he is the best just so fans and media don't throw him under the bus and heap too much pressure on him too soon. But alas, if he's clearly the best out of fall camp, then he would have earned it and would deserve to start the year off as the starter and holding him out would again go against Bronco's philosophies.

The bottom line is we should all trust Bronco and the staff are going to do what's right for the program and the guy who is the most capable of leading the team to victories will start until further evidence arises that changes who that guy is. Notice I didn't say the most popular or the one with the best arm but the guy who the staff feels will win us ballgames. And it could very well change a few games into the season.

We've been through this situation before... Max Hall and Cade Cooper. We all know Bronco and Co. picked the right man for the job. We're in the exact same situation, minus R. Nelson did not run the scout team like Max did, but was a back up QB, which has a greater roll in my opinion.

Two guys who may transfer if Heaps is not the QB are Van Noy and Apo. I don't think either are LDS and I believe Heaps has been instrumental in getting Apo to BYU and in our retention of Van Noy.

If Heaps goes on a mission we do stand a chance of losing him. That's a fact. If we start him this year I don't think he goes on a mission, meaning we don't endure the possible risk of losing him.

Van Noy was committed to BYU long before Heaps came along, and he recommitted after his troubles long before Heaps committed. Heaps may be buddies with Van Noy, but you are grossly mistaken to state that Heaps was "instrumental" in the retention of a player who was retained long before Heaps even committed to BYU himself.

If anyone transfers because their friend isn't good enough to win the starting spot on performance alone, we don't need those players. If Heaps doesn't win the starting job and transfers, what's the big deal? We lose a backup quarterback when we have a logjam at the position.

Like I said before Matt Barkley will be a stud next year and I hate to say it but Jordan Winn is going to be a thorn in our A$$ for a very long time thanks to Whittingham's vision of the future. Sitting QBs on the bench is a proven technique in the NFL but in college a 4 year starter is going to make a difference.

Sitting QBs on the bench is also proven in NCAA football. All things equal, give me a redshirt freshman quarterback over a true freshman quarterback any day of the week. You also forget that Barkley was one of the best freshman quarterbacks to come out of high school in the past 5 years. Heaps is the best quarterback in the worst quarterback class in 10 years. Apples and oranges my friend.

Think about it, Max Hall could have used another year in our offense if you ask me. Each of us have endured Max throwing to the right 90% of the time and keying in on one/two recievers for entire seasons....

Seriously???? Max Hall had three years to fix those problems, and he never made any improvements. You really think year four was when he was going to turn a corner?

Another issue that was brought up by one of you is-will Anae and Bronco have the courage to bench the starter whomever that may be if he is underperforming mid-season? If there is anything we know about Bronco it is that he prefers consistency, he doesn't switch things up or take many chances at all. Whoever he names starter out of spring ball will be the starter for the year.

The problem with your fear-mongering is that the problem would exist regardless of who the starter is---If Heaps is the starter and is underperforming mid-season, will Anae and Bronco have the courage to bench him? It's a neutral argument that doesn't have any bearing on the issue.

At the end of the day, it's nakedly apparent that you simply think Heaps is the shiznit and should be the starter regardless of his performance simply because of his hype and high school stats. Thing is, we already have other four-star quarterbacks and another Parade All-American quarterback in camp, all of whom have more experience with the coaches, practices, playbook and college football in general than does Heaps. At this point his hype means nothing. Our two most hyped quarterbacks before this point were Paul Shoemaker and Ben Olsen. They combined for all of 63 pass attempts at BYU, and Olsen didn't exactly pan out in greener pastures.

Like every other player to come through the program, Heaps will have to earn his playing time. When it comes time to name a starter, we can only hope that the coaches are smart enough to name their guy based on his performance in practice instead of his high-school highlight films.

I just want to see BYU win, which means pick the kid who can help the team win RIGHT NOW. If that is Nelson, he should start. If it is Lark, play him. If it is Heaps, roll out the kid and let's go. I want to see us competing v. UW in September, because that will be a tough first game. UW has experience at QB, speed, and is better now then when we beat then 2 years ago. I just want to see BYU win, regardless of who plays. And after those guys are long gone, I will say the exact same thing about the new crop of players.

I frankly don't think that Barkley is going to be anything special next year. Sure he's a great talent but he's not going to lead USC to an undefeated season and given all the talent around him, he should wind up looking pretty good, at least stat-wise. But stats don't always tell the whole story.

As for 'Whittingham's vision of the future'? If he wants to win a conference championship one out of every 4-5 years, then by all means, go right ahead. But at BYU we expect to win conference championships. Sooner or later that will translate into BCS bowls too. Bronco has built his program from the foundation up. Kwhitt benefited from the work that Urban did previously. And I'm not concerned with Jordan Wynn at all. He's not going to be the next Alex Smith. At best, he'll be the next Brett Ratliff or Brian Johnson but I question whether he'll ever be that good even.

You can't run a program by playing your QB's for four years at a time. If you don't name the starter by merit, you won't be able to recruit effectively. You need depth in addition to starters (Bradford/Jones). Plus, you don't always know what the QB classes are going to look like each year so you've got to take what you can get when you can get it and promise the best man will start.

Both Apo and Van Noy are LDS.
