What a frustrating game!!

We're magicians. We can foul people without touching them. :bug: :skeptic: :skeptic: :sulk:

They're magicians. They can grab, poke, slap, push and tackle people without fouling them.

I really believe the refs wanted to keep Jimmer from going off, or else he didn't pay them enough, because, for most of the game, he couldn't buy a foul, no matter how he got manhandled.

Here comes the #8 seed. Thanks MWC for another year in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Exactly, I won't be surprised with a #8 against the toughest #9.

Sorry, I forgot to add that the game against the #9 seed will be less than 100 miles away from the campus of the #9 seed.

maybe we just need to schedule all of our games away from home since that's the only place we can play when it actually matters.

I will never grace the unlv invitational with my dollars. Vote against las Vegas! Down with the sinners and their city!!

that strip was so clean, that ref just made someone alot of money, prob himself, one of the worst calls i have ever seen. Iam thinking we will be a 6 seed. please no more 8 seed.

This makes me sick. This cannot continue to be the UNLV Invitational. UNLV knows no matter how they do in the regular season, they can punch their ticket due to the tournament.

And magically get a higher seed, in a better location, against a weaker opponent (even for the opponent's seed) than the better teams from the MWC.

wow, that last "foul" on Loyd? He literally didn't even touch him!

Same on the first foul on Loyd, and quite a few other "fouls" that were called on us.

The foul called on that play was not only ridiculous but it was also a game changer. We were off to the races on that steal. Would have been up by 1 but instead we go down by 3. All because of one bogus, late whistle.

They got the ball to Willis at the end of the game, we didnt end of story. I am not sure why can get him the ball. i Acutally not that mad with the refs this time. I was expecting the same holding and handchecking like always but seemed pretty fair except for the strip that was so clean. I am not sure if this was brought up but Tavarni had a horrible game, cannot wait for him to graduate. Also starting the game with Hartstock in the zone costs us 9 points. Just a few thoughts from the game.

No, what cost us the game is UNLV's unique and magical ability to learn how to shoot when they play BYU.

UNLV has played 10 conference home games this year (while everyone else has played just eight), they have shot .318 from behind the arc against every MWC opponent not named BYU. But in the two games against BYU they have started both games shooting .777 from three-point land and .476 for the games.

There is no rational explanation for UNLV to be able to shoot only against BYU and be abysmal against EVERY other opponent in the T&M. I don't buy the excuse that BYU is just a poor defensive team. BYU conference opponents have shot .329 from 3 and all our opponents shoot .321. BYU is a good defensive team.

But for whatever magical, Danny Gans, Lance Burton and David Copperfield reason, UNLV just makes shots against us that they don't against ANYONE else.

In fact if you take UNLV's home game against out of their tabulation their 3pt shooting drops from .355 to .342, that's a HUGE bump from one opponent.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to why UNLV can shoot so well, so consistently against just ONE opponent?

I feel that BYU's troubles in LV stem from a couple of things.

1. BYU's zone is average at best and UNLV put it to the test. That zone is crushed as soon as one person gets in the lane leading to a layup or an open 3. BYU is still working at recovering when their zone gets tweaked out of shape.

2. UNLV comes ready to play and for whatever reason each player is 100% confident that their shots are going to fall when they play BYU. We cougar fans call this luck, I think it's a lot more than that.

3. UNLV just has BYU's number. The way that UNLV stalled when they hit 51 points yesterday, BYU should have put them away. It came down to who was going to play smart and aggressive and BYU did not make the plays they needed to.

4. Again, BYU looked confused and timid for LONG stretches yesterday that lead to TOs and terrible shot selection. I've decided a lot of that has to do with the way UNLV plays defense that doesn't allow BYU to get settle into a rhythm and make good decisions. We haven't faced too many teams that will pressure the ball full court, but the two that I can remember beat us (UNLV, UNM @ MC). Kruger took that move right out of Alford's book. If I was game planning for BYU, I would simply make them uncomfortable (lots of ball pressure, be physical, and hope the refs are as generous as they were last night for UNLV).

It's all about what's good for the conference. BYU and UNM were already a lock to go dancing, so the league made sure that the bubble teams made it to the final game of the tourney. They'd rather have four teams in the dance than get two teams with higher seeds and a better chance at going far.
