Spring Ball

I'm not one to jump on spring numbers and can't make any assumptions until after spring ball is overwith BUT Jake Heaps has been the most impressive QB in spring ball IMO.



He's got the better numbers thus far, bigger plays, etc...

If this keeps up... Riley will be just a flash in the pan. Our offense is made for a Heaps/Lark type QB and not Nelson. All odds are against him in this aspect.

Has Jake gone up against the #1 Defense yet? I think most of his work has come against the 2s and 3s. But yes, through one week, Heaps does seem to be the most productive.

I don't know. That's a good question. He's played on the #1 offense, so I assume he has been up against the #1 defense.

Yes he has. They rotate the QB's running with the 1's and they also rotate going against the 1's defensively. Jake burned Brian Logan with a pump fake for a long completion earlier this week.

Seems to me Riley Nelson isn't up to par with Heaps and Lark. Unless Munns is an absolute stud... I see the race going to Heaps and Lark, and as of now... Heaps has to have the edge over Lark. BUT, there is still plenty of time to shine.

IMO, Lark is 3rd string by a wide margin right now. Nelson still leads the camp in completion percentage I think, and Lark's is about a fourth of that... Heaps has more yards and TDs by a good margin.

I disagree. From what I have read Lark leads the QB's in INT's and has a fumbled hand off. Right now it is Heaps then Nelson with Lark in 3rd.

Be patient. Heaps played a lot last year. Lark is coming off a mission. Heaps should be the sharpest to start off. There is a couple more weeks of practice left this spring. What Lark is doing at the end of that is the best measure.

I'm patient... Like I said, there's still plenty of time to shine. I'm just noticing a trend going on right now. Apparently I mistakingly got Lark and Nelson mixed up, cause it's Lark who's made the "worse" mistakes during practice. BUT, like I said... Still plenty of time. Lark does have the most rust to shake off than any of them.

There is the first four days of pratice totalled. Interesting numbers being thrown around, Nelson, doesn't have the best completion percentage, and Larks is no where near a fourth as bad. Granted he has those turnovers. Check it out.

Sno, is Heaps skipping voluntary practices and showing up late? Is he avoiding taxing drills?

Yeah, I thought he only did that the first week or so until he got his head screwed on straight.

Anytime you are in charge of a football team you develop a system for developing players and a system. You mold that system to fit the players whom you have determined are the best fit to play. To dramatically change anything based on a single kid shows how little a coach knows about his players, how little he trusts in his system, and how quickly he will be gone.



Allow them all to compete and let the kid who will give us the best chance to win to play. I don't care if it's a walk-on who comes in and forces a 10 star recruit to sit on the bench.

OBVIOUSLY we are not insane if we sit Jake, but you just made Jake Heaps look like he would be the worst case starting QB... Depending on what scouting organization you look at, he's got 4 stars in some and five stars in others. FYI- there is no limit on how many 4/5 stars you can give a year, thus it really doesn't matter how strong/ weak the incoming QB class is.... I wouldn't parade the fact that he has never taken a college snap in his life either, the kind of expousure/ experience Nelson gained will be made up within the first half of the first game....

By looking at the past, Jake Heaps is clearly a supirior QB over any of the other guys, what matters now is how that will look in the future. It's a simple SWAT analysis, pro/con list- the one who has the edge in most categories will start.

He was during the first month or so, but the upperclassmen had an "intervention" that put him in his place. While he has improved, needless to say he really handicapped himself in the leadership department.



FWIW, I'm not saying Heaps sucks, but we have 3 other quarterbacks who got 4 star ratings (Heaps was 4 stars in two of the three rating services) and we have another Parade All-American. And yes, this is the worst quarterback class to come out of high school in a decade, so saying he's the "best quarterback coming out of high school" as if that makes him automatically better than the others is a bit disingenuous....they came out in stronger quarterback classes.



I just remember our last two golden boy quarterbacks who came in with gaudy statistics and 5-stars pinned to their sleeves, state championships up the wazoo and the national press slobbering all over them. Tell me--what did Paul Shoemaker and Ben Olsen do at the college level? They had some pretty good practices that got the fans in a tizzy, but after that I can't seem to remember much.



Forgive me for not getting sucked in for a third time in my lifetime. Heaps will have to earn my respect on the field this Fall like any other freshman on the team.
