Nelson 3/3, 1 TD, 70 yards.

Heaps 8/10, 1 TD, 80 yards.

Up until the TCU game last season, I think Nelson's pass efficiency rating was just as high. I think he was something like 9/9 with a couple of TDs. Someone should calculate what it would have been.

To me, it is a telling sign that Lark did not participate in the 11 on 11 drills. It sounds like the QB race is down to two.

Nelson was 5/5, 1 TD, 73 yards last season until the TCU game. 288.64 passer rating

He then went 2/5 against TCU...

What this shows is that Nelson realized that what Heaps was doing through the first two weeks of spring ball and that if he wanted to be the starter he needed to step up his game and start making plays. Those first two weeks Heaps accounted for something like 11 of the offenses 14 TDs. This past week it's been pretty even. Nelson was clearly challenged by the emerging Heaps and has raised his game. This is a very good development for BYU. It means that BYU will be choosing from two excellent QBs.

I anticipate that Lark will get one more shot in fall ball. Let's not forget that he was only three months removed from his mission when spring camp started. He's still got a lot of mission rust to shake off but has done surprisingly well this spring in spite of that. Give him four more months before fall camp and a summer or workouts with the guys and he'll at least get another look come August.

By reducing Lark's reps the past couple of weeks I think the coaches probably were trying to accomplish a few things.

1.) Bronco has already commented on the attitude and demeanor change Lark had experienced over his mission. This could just be a test to see how he'd handle adversity; whether he would support his teammates and try to rise to the challenge or whether he would throw in the towel or transfer.

2.) Try to create an even more intense battle between Riley and Jake by increasing each of their reps and seeing how they'd respond.

3.) Maybe get the team used to having a couple of guys who could move the ball and inspire confidence in their teammates.

Spot on. And with Munns returning 2nd string will get an even bigger push to produce. I do think that they are using Heaps and Nelson in very different ways. Heaps chips away and takes what the D gives him (BYU style ball). Nelson throws deep passes (often) and runs for short runs. I'm interested to see what today's practice will show.

Why is Lark a sophomore? Was he on the 2007 roster? He redshirted in 2006 but he just got off his mission...I can't remember his situation. I think Lark and Munns have lots of talent, but may have to be moved or transfer. Munns is huge so I would've liked to have seen him play, who knows what will happen.

Lark was on a mission in 08 and 09. He was on the roster in both 2006 and 2007. He wound up breaking his leg and that may be why he delayed his mission. I also think, given the unsettledness of the QB situation going into 2007, he may have also liked his chances to replace Beck. But don't remember all of the details, four years later.

Lark was 1-2 for 50 yards and a TD. That makes two practices in a row that our secondary, the #1 strength of our team, has been devoured like tasty little cupcakes...

I was thinking the same thing. But them I read that Bradley and Rich were kept out of the 11 on 11 drills--again. Rich just practiced for the first time this week. So it seems to me that it is our backups that are struggling. So perhaps we lack the depth we thought we had, because it sounds as if Aguirre, Eason and Buckner and the new safeties keep getting abused.

I wouldn't read anything into the practice statistics. We don't know what the rules are that they are playing by. Coaches set up situations and the players have to respond to them. You never know what is going on and what drill was being run when those td's were thrown. I wouldn't read into it that our secondary is going to suck, or that it isn't deep once we lose a starter. You just don't know what was actually going on.

Well, we do read alot into it over the QB performances, so why wouldn't we over the defensive performance in the exact same drills?

You are right, you shouldn't be reading anything into the QB's stats either. What if Nelson wins the starting job, will everyone be up in arms because heaps is "obviously better"? This is practice, they run drills in practice, this is not real games. We don't know who is actually performing the best from the coaches standpoint. We are only seeing stats. Stats do not always tell the whole story.

This quarterback battle could wind up giving us a much better QB than we would have gotten if either one had been named the starter on day #1. At the very least it is giving both Heaps and Nelson a ton motivation to learn the offense FAST and could very well show which quarterback can better handle the pressure a BYU QB feels when demands/expectations are as high as they are.

Practice? We talkin' 'bout practice. We talkin' 'bout practice. We talkin' 'bout practice.

I think something Coach Kafusi said about his D-line guys applies equally to the QB race, and the coaching staff's overall mentality about positions:

"I just tell all of them, 'Right now, you're all in the same boat. I haven't seen any of you jump ahead.' It keeps them hungry. If they work hard, we'll see how it works out."
