Urroner - Grroan!!! But I'll re-tell it. It's one of those "bad" good jokes. LOL!!

Losing Unga's leadership and skill is huge, but there is no reason to think that somebody (like Q) can't step in and do exactly what Unga did.....and be MWC freshman of the year (but he may have to compete with Jake  ) .

Don't lose hope.

I don't know if Unga will get picked up in the supplemental draft. He may have to join a team as a free agent. If a team picks #5 (for example) in the supp draft they forfeit that same pick in the real draft next year, so they really have to want the player.

Last year the Redskins picked up Jeremy Jarmon in the supp draft......and NOBODY else got drafted.

Here's the list of non-supplemental-draftees:

Blake Boyd (Western Kentucky), Torris Magee (Southern Mississippi), Dixon McKinner (Texas Tech), Joe McMahon (Central Michigan), Demetrice Morley (Tennessee), Deon Murphy (Kansas State) and Corey Surrency (Florida State)

I don't think losing Unga is a big loss in leadership. I don't think Harvey is a leader. He's a follower. A quiet guy. In the military you learn to identify who are and aren't leaders. Harvey would be in the latter category. Just my opinion, but I think if we were counting on player leadership from Harvey this year we potentially could have a player leadership problem much like we had in 2008.

My first silver lining is this: if Harvey enters the supplemental draft, BYU will finally have their first #1 pick in an NFL draft.
BYU has already had a football player taken #1 in the NFL's supplemental draft. Bonus points if you can name the player.
Pretty sure it was Steve Young. Went from USFL to NFL in the supplemental draft. Tamps Bay took him #1 in a year where the supplemental draft was pretty big.

Good job Lawboy!

Exactly correct. Steve Young, playing in a semi-pro league, was taken #1 in the NFL supplemental draft.

Yeah, from what I understand:

1- Very, very few people enter the supplemental draft.

2- If you go in the 1st round of the supp. draft, that team gives up a normal 1st round pick next season.

3- There's really only 1 round of the supp. draft.

4- Harvey is definitely NOT 1st round material.

5- Harvey will NOT be taken in the supplemental draft.

6- Harvey will have to hope to get picked up as a free agent, making league minimum without a promised roster spot.

7- Harvey's best financial and career bet by far would be to get married and get back into BYU to play.

8- I doubt he'll do that.

I'm going to get stoned for this, but I don't think that we lose what everyone thinks. Unga was amazing his first year, and injuries and a variety of other things have kept him from reaching the potential of that first year. We have all the tools we need to reload. There is no reason to think we can't get Unga type numbers out of Juice, DiLuigi, Philips, Teo, and company. I hope that he comes back if that is what he decides, but he might find himself in a Manase Tonga situation... Where the others have been producing and growing while he was gone, and finds himself returning "jobless." A healthy Unga is a force to be reckoned with, and bar-none it would be better with him in the mix, but lets be honest: One year from now these guys would be jumping him in the depth chart anyways. So now is as good a time as any to shift focus and find the next "almost every down" back.

Thanks Harvey, you have been amazing, and here is to a quick return or Godspeed wherever you find yourself going. I and many others hope for the best for you and yours.

Unga's departure puts the spotlight more directly on the OLine in terms of leadership and opening holes. This may turn out to be their finest hour

There are 7 rounds in the supplemental draft, but it's over in 5 minutes. Each team submits the names of the players they want (if any) and the round in which they would be willing to pick up the player. It's like a silent auction, but everything is put into a computer that just spits out the results. If you bid 5th round, but the guy goes 4th round, no harm.

Whatever pick you use in the supplemental draft, you forfeit for next season, so no, Harvey is unlikely to go in the "first round." I wouldn't be surprised to see him go as the first player in the 6th round or so.

Effects of Unga's departure:

1. Denial

2. Anger

3. Bargaining

4. Depression

5. Acceptance

Don't know what stage I'm in but I won't be to Acceptance until I see how good Quazada is.

I kind of feel worse for missing out on Brandon Bourbon, but maybe I'm the only one... It's not like he would for sure be the next big thing, but it sure wouldn't of hurt us depth wise, if we never see Unga play at BYU again.

Very interesting information. Where did you learn this?

If accurate, that means that Harvey could be the only player in the draft, that no one could be taken in rounds 1-6, and that he could be picked up in the 7th round. That's both intriguing and bizarre. It also moves him from having no shot (based on how I had previously thought it worked) to being almost guaranteed finding a team.

There's not much info out there since they don't even have a supplemental draft every year (no players qualified for it in 2008, and only one player got picked in 2009), and the players who go in the supplemental draft tend to be "damaged" goods as something unique happened to put them there--either flubbed the paperwork (i.e. stupid) or got booted from school (i.e. character issues) but here are some sources to let you cobble the facts together. Sorry I don't have one all-inclusive source, I just knew about the s. draft from asking scouts a lot of dumb questions.

Hans Olson also explained the supplemental draft this same way on the radio yesterday. Basically the teams indicate what round they are willing to draft the player in and if they are willing to take the player earlier than any other team then they get the player. They then lose that same round draft pick the following draft. The most notable supplemental draft prospect that I have heard of is Brian Bosworth. Maybe lends to snoscythe saying that they may be damaged goods...

I thought Jim Kelly and Steve Young were supplemental draft picks as well when the USFL folded.

I can't remember what happened to Bo Jackson, but it seems like he was drafted twice. But I think both were the actual draft as opposed to the supplemental one.

1984 had the largest supplemental draft, I believe. That was the year many USFL players merged into the NFL. Gordon Hudson was also a 1st rounder in that draft, too. So many really good players went in that draft. Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Herschel Walker, Anthony Carter, Keith Byers, etc. Name a great USLF players and they went in the supplemental draft of 1984. Since then, pretty sparse for the most part.

Well, barring another huge surprise, Harvey is gone as Jay Drew is reporting that Harvey is putting in for the NFL's supplemental draft in June.

Jay Drew wasn't reporting, he was speculating. His later speculations left the opportunity for Harvey to come back open:

Read Drew's blog more closely. The blog was written AFTER the article. His blog post mentions that he interviewed a bunch of people to file a story to beat a deadline for the next day....the next day is today....the article he was rushing to file for the next day is the article you've just linked to. As much as I hate for it to be true, Harvey is not coming back.

Are you sure about that now? It looks like I read it right.

Outside of the conclusion I drew in the last sentence, everything I posted before was true. And I stick by the last sentence. Yes, Harvey now really wants to come back, but I don't have a lot of confidence in a bishop giving him back an endorsement in time for September. Maybe if he was a first time offender, but that's not Harvey's situation. Fool me once, shame on me....

Bishop's endorsement, yes. Dean of students' approval, I don't know.
